TOUCHED BT AN ANGEL

How would you

Define an angel

The one word

That comes to my mind

Is “Heavenly”

Beings that help us along

On life’s journey

Beings that assist us

In one way or another

Psalm 91:11 &12 says

“For he will command his angels

Concerning you

To guard you in all your ways

They will lift you up

In their hands

So that you will

Not strike your foot

Against a stone”

Heavenly---to be sure

I have had many earthly angels

In my life

My parents---my 2 sisters

And other family members and friends

To help me along the way

I know

I would not be sitting here today---writing this

If it were not for them

But there are also

Angels from heaven

That God has actually used

To deliver messages too

We know

That the angel Gabriel

Helped Daniel to understand his visions

We know

That the angel Gabriel

Appeared to Zechariah

At the birth of John the Baptist

And above all

We know that he appeared to Mary

To ask her

To be the Mother of God

TOUCHED BY AN ANGEL

Then we have Saint Michael

Our defender and protector

To help us

Against the wickedness and snares of the devil

Michael appears

In the book of Daniel

As the special guardian and protector of Israel

And in the book of Revelation

As the principal fighter for God

In the fight

Between good and evil

Michael’s power is so strong

That it is believed

That souls can be rescued

Even from hell itself

May we all be so lucky

Finally we have the angel Raphael

Named in the book of Tobot

Raphael’s name means

“God has healed”

My wish for all of us is that

We will be touched by many beings

Both heavenly and earthly

To help us

On life’s journey

And that you feel

God’s love and presence---SO STRONG

Inside of you

That you know

That you have been blessed by God

And that indeed---you have been

The greatest compliment

That we can give another human being

Is to tell them

That they are

An imitator of Christ

Albeit on a smaller scale

So how can we be

How will we be

An imitation of Christ

In today’s world

Be perfect in love

For every other human being

Be an imitator of Christ

Be perfect in forgiveness

For every other human being

Be an imitator of Christ

Be like Saint Francis of Assisi

Clothe the naked

Feed the poor

House the homeless

Be an imitator

Of Christ

Be an imitator

Of Saint Francis

Be perfect in love

For the lost and forlorn

Be perfect in kindness

For every other human being

Be an imitator of Christ

And though

We may not be perfection

As long as

We try

To do what we can do

Maybe someday---someway

Someone will say,

“I see Christ in you

You are an imitation of Christ”

A CHARITABLE HEART---THE STORY OF SAINT VINCENT DePAUL

I am sure

You have heard the saying:

“Charity begins at home”

I am here to tell you

That that is NOT true

It is not true today

Was not true yesterday

And will never ever be true

Saint Vincent DePaul

Was born in to a peasant family

Was educated by the Franciscans

And became a priest

At the age of 19

His following

Consisted of people

Who were rich and fashionable

Yet Vincent himself

Was utterly devoted to the poor and oppressed

A heart of compassion

A heart of charity

A heart of love

He founded

A congregation of priests

Who would live from a community fund

Renounce all church support

And work to help reestablish faith

In the smaller towns and villages

In that same year---1625

He established the Sisters of Charity

The first congregation of “unenclosed” women

Totally devoted to the poor and the sick

He was a LEGEND

Even in his own lifetime

He touched all people

Clergy and lay people alike

Rich and poor

Outcasts and convicts

A CHARITABLE HEART to be sure

Legend has it

That EVEN NOW---almost 600 years later---after his death

That his physical heart has NOT decayed---is still incorrupt

So we need no further testimony

Than God himself

About the charity---about the heart

Of a man named Vincent DePaul

Like the saying goes,

“It is what is inside that counts”

Dear Lord---we pray

That we may have ALL have

The HEART OF
The love of

The compassion of ---and

That the healthcare industry

Or maybe

Even some of the Doctors

Are more concerned with

How much money they are making

Than your personal health

If your answers

To any of these question are yes

LISTEN UP

To the story

Of two of our early physicians

Legend says

That they were twin brothers

And doctors

Who practiced their art

Without asking for fees

Can you imagine

Someone doing that today

In any profession

Reportedly

Numerous cures of healing

Were claimed by their intercession

They are

The patron saints of doctors

And their acts

Recount their skill

In both the healing

Of both men and animals

Their most famous medical achievement

Was their grafting of a new white leg

To the live body

Of a cancerous negro 

They reportedly

Had a reputation

For disinterestedness about financial gain

Their feast day

Is September 28^th

Dear Lord

We pray

For many more people

As well as physicians

Like Cosmas and Damian

“Hearing the Word of God”

In the 13^th Chapter

Of Saint Matthew’s Gospel

Jesus tells the story

Of the parable of the sower

He tells the story

Of a farmer

Sowing his seed

He tells us about

How the birds

Eat up some of the seed

And he tells us

How some of the seed

Fall on rocky ground

And doesn’t grow

And some fall in the thorns

And don’t grow

But some of the seed falls on good soil

And produces a great harvest

What about us

In today’s world

Is God harvesting

A crop in us

I dear say

We live in a godless society

People want the word “God” off of money

People want no prayer in school

No ten commandments plaque on public property

Maybe

We can’t change the world

But we can

Have a soft heart

We can have

A listening ear

We can give someone

A hug or a handshake

WE can be there

For our family, our friends

Maybe even someone

We don’t like so much

How about you

Is God’s love and word

Alive in you

Maybe if

Enough of us

Decide to put God’s word first

Decide to love and be kind to one another

Maybe we really can

Begin to change the world

SELFISHNESS OR SELFLESSNESS

Are you like me

Have you noticed

What a selfish---me first world

That we live in

And seemingly---at least to me anyway

Getting more so every day

When were the last times

That you heard the words

“Please” and “Thank you”

I hear them

But NOT very often

“Turn my heart

Toward your statutes

And not toward selfish gain”                                       Psalm119:36

It seems like

That we live in a world

That tells us

Beauty/looks is what it is all about

BUT GOD TELLS US

That beauty is

A matter of the heart

Like the advertising slogan says

It really is

“What is inside that counts”

The world tells us

---preaches to us

That wealth, money, materialism

Will make us happy

And to get it

Whatever way we can

Just get it

“An unfriendly man

Pursues selfish ends

He defies all sound judgment”                                          Proverbs 18:1

Have you ever smiled

And said hello to a stranger

And they look at you

Like you just assaulted them

Or you do something kind

For someone

And they look at you

And wonder what your motivation is

When did our world

Become so cynical

What has happened to us

“Do nothing out of selfish ambition

Or vain conceit

But in humility

Consider others better than yourselves”                                     Philippians 2:3

And then

We have the people

Who live out of selflessness

Who give up their lives for others

To try to make the world

A better place for all

People like

Abraham, Moses, Jesus

And in more recent time

Men like Martin Luther King,

And John and Robert Kennedy

And just simple ordinary folks

Like you and me

Trying to live their lives

Trying to get along

But taking the time

To stop and be kind to others

We just need to remember,

“Each of you should look

NOT only to your own self interest

But also to the interests of others”                                                   Philippians 2:4

When we

As a nation/as a world

Begin to live

With a little less selfishness

And a little more selflessness

This world will begin to become

A BETTER PLACE

He was born May 25^th, 1887

In Italy

The only Catholic priest in history

To bear the stigmata---the 5 wounds of Christ

He was given many gifts by God

Discernment of spirit, prophecy, healing

And as a powerful intercessor for us

Before our God

He was

One of the remarkable men

Of the 20^th century

A man with great faith

And spirituality

“Truly I say to you

Ask and it will be given to you

Seek and you shall find

Knock and

It will be open to you”

In the name of Father Padre Pio

We pray for you

To change

Each of us individually

All of us collectively

And return our world to God

“Truly I say to you

If you ask anything of the Father

In my name

He will give it to you”

Padre Pio labored endlessly

For the SALVATION of souls

“Truly I say to you

Heaven and earth will pass away

But my words

Will pass away”

Padre Pio

Was carried home to his heavenly Father---all our Fathers

On September 23^rd, 1968

He was canonized as a Saint on June 16^th, 2002

There used to be an OLD game show

I believe

It was in the 1960’s

And it was called  “TRUTH OR CONSEQUENCES”

Every decision

That we make

EVERY action

That we do

Or that we don’t do

Has a result

And ultimately

OUR ACTIONS

Will be proved

Right or wrong

BY GOD

“Each one should test

His own actions

Then he

Can take PRIDE in himself

WITHOUT  comparing himself

To somebody else

For each one

SHOULD carry his load”                                               Galatians 6:4

And IF our decisions

Are correct

They should prove wise

They should STAND

The test of time

The CONSEQUENCES of our decisions

Should stand

The test of time

“But WISDOM

Is proved right

By her actions”                                                          Matthew 11:19

HOPEFULLY

Our lives and decisions

And the consequences thereof

WILL STAND THE TEST OF TIME

If we are FAITHFUL

OUR LORD and his SPIRIT

It will lead us to

Make the appropriate decision

And take the appropriate actions

At the appropriate time

“MY times are

In your hands

DELIVER me from my enemies

And from those

HONEY---THE TAX MAN IS HERE

( or the story of Saint Matthew )

“Honey---

The tax man is here”

How many of us

Like to hear those words

Or how many of us

Like getting a letter

From the IRS in the mail

Or going downtown for an audit

This is the story of Saint Matthew

Originally called Levi

A tax collector of the Jewish people

Who worked for the Roman government

One day

Jesus met Matthew

At his tax collector’s booth

And said, “follow me”

One night---while having dinner at Matthew’s house

And many of his tax collector friends

Some of the teachers of Jewish law

Were asking his disciples,

“Why does he eat with tax collectors and sinners”

Jesus heard about the conversation, and said,

“It is not the healthy who need a Doctor

But the sick

I have not come to call the righteous---but sinners”                                 Mark 2:16&17

Good for the Apostles

And very good for us

It is believed

That after the Resurrection

That Matthew went on

To preach the Word of God

Either in Ethiopia or Persia

And it is believed

That Matthew wrote his Gospel

From Antioch

Primarily to the Jews

But also to Gentiles and Christians

As an original Apostle

He gave us an eyewitness account

Jesus speaks more

In Matthew’s Gospel

Than in any of the other Gospels

And Matthew quotes

From many of the Old Testament books

To prove that Jesus certainly is

The “Fulfillment”---The Anointed One

Matthew traces the genealogy of Jesus

Describes Jesus’ temptation in the desert

And concludes his Gospel

With the calling of the GREAT COMMISSION

To all believers

Matthew teaches us

That the standards of God are high

And that the example that he---God---gave us

Is perfect---Jesus Christ

And Matthew teaches us

That Christ is sufficient

For whatever need we might have

And that the ways of God

Are infinitely higher

Than the ways of this world

I wonder

What Jesus would say today

If Jesus could see our 5o’clock news

Where person after person

Is criticizing each other

Where person after person

And/or all of society

Is trying to take another person down

The truth is

I know what he would say

And you do too

Because in fact—he said it:

“Do not judge

Or you will be judged

And in the same way

You judge others

You will be judged

And the measure you use

It will be measured to you”                                          Matthew 7:1&2

And in Luke 6:36—Jesus says:

“Be merciful—just as your father is merciful”

On October 5^th, 1938

A young religious

By the name of Sister Faustina ( Helen Kowalska )

Died at Our Lady of Mercy in Cracow, Poland

She had had only 3 years

Of very simple education

And her tasks in the convent

Were very very menial

Usually in the kitchen or the garden

In repeated revelations to Sister Faustina

Jesus’ message to her was

“To trust in him” 

To trust

In the Divine nature

Of his heart

On February 22nd, 1931

Our Lord and Savior appeared to Sister Faustina

Bringing with him

A wonderful message of mercy

For ALL of mankind

Jesus I trust in you

Mercy not judgment

Mercy for us all

If we believe

He told Sister Faustina:

“Mankind will not enjoy peace

Until it turns in confidence

To My Mercy”

Mercy for us all

If we lay our lives

And our failings

If we lay them down

At the foot of the cross

And his Divine Heart

Return to God

Today is Divine Mercy Sunday

The psalmist uses three terms

To REFER to God

“The Lord is my LIGHT

And SALVATION

Whom should I fear

The Lord is

MY LIFE’S REFUGE

Of whom

Shall I be afraid”

We ALL have problems

In this life

Problems of physical-emotional

And spiritual degrees

Yet we KNOW

That the Lord

IS OUR LIGHT

“God is LIGHT

IN HIM

There is NO darkness at all

IF we

Claim to have fellowship with him

Yet WALK in darkness

We lie

And do not live

BY THE TRUTH”                                                   1 John 1:5-6

GOD IS OUR LIGHT

In the pitch black darkness

OF OUR LIVES

One cannot save himself

ONLY GOD CAN SAVE

God is our salvation

HE is our deliverer

Again

ONE cannot save himself

After a period of time-he comes back to tell her

How much he misses and loves her

In front of a large group of women-no less

She puts her hand over his mouth-and basically says,

“SHUT UP-you had me at hello”

We come into this world as babies

We come in screaming and crying

But we NEED NOT worry

GOD HAS US AT HELLO

“In the beginning

God called you

Created you out of nothing

To be SOMEONE

To be –A CHILD OF GOD

GOD HAD YOU FROM HELLO

He called you to be HIS CHILD

A child of God

From the beginning

Of our life

God HELD YOU in the palm of his hand

Do you know what idolatry is

Basically it is

Putting something before God

And it has been going on

Since the beginning of time

Satan said to Eve,

“Did God really say

“You must not eat from any tree

In the garden”

Eve responds,

“We may eat from trees

in the garden

But God did say

“You must not eat fruit

From the fruit

That is in the middle of the garden

And you must not touch it

Or you will die”

Eve and Adam

Chose evil, chose Satan, chose fruit

Over the Word of God

Fast forward about 1400 years

And we find the Lord

Saying to Moses,

“Tell the Israelites this:

You have seen for yourselves

That I have spoken to you from heaven

Do not make any gods

To be along side me

Do not make for yourselves

Gods of silver or gods of gold”                                               Exodus 20:22-23

As the Lord is finishing speaking

To Moses on Mount Sinai

Aaron and the Israelite people

Are finishing building a golden calf

To put on an altar to worship

Then they said,

“These are your gods O Israel

Who brought you up out of Egypt”                                                    Exodus 32:4

Moses goes back down the mountain

Only to find the people

Worshipping the golden calf

Moses becomes so angry

That he destroys the two tablets of testimony

“The tablets were the work of God

The writing was the writing of God

Engraved on the tablets”                                                      Exodus 32:16

Fast forward about 600 years

And we find God himself

In the form of Jesus Christ

Walking the earth

He teaches us

The two greatest commandments

He teaches us

About forgiveness

He teaches us the Beatitudes

And gives us The Sermon on the Mount

Only to be betrayed

By a friend---with a kiss

For 30 pieces of silver

But he leaves with us the SPIRIT

The third person of the TRINITY

Known as our counselor

And active in the lives of his believers

But how many “TRUE” believers are left?

We are worshipping

The gods of materialism

The gods of sexual promiscuity

The gods of pornography

The gods of drug and alcohol addiction

And Lord only knows what else

EVERY DEPRAVITY

Known to man

I beseech you-me-ALL of us

To return to God

And IF you haven’t already done so

Put GOD AND FAMILY FIRST

“God is spirit

And his worshippers

Must worship in spirit and truth”

Have fun with your life

But keep God where he should be

NUMBER 1 IN YOUR LIFE

SEEKING

Are you seeking God

With ALL your heart

With all your soul

With all your mind

With all your strength

IF you are

I GUARANTEE

You will find him

“……..for the Lord

SEARCHES every heart

And understands every motive

Behind the thoughts

If you seek him

HE will be FOUND by you”                                          1 Chronicles 28:9

I think it is KEY

That GOD UNDERSTANDS every motive

For if we seek him

For our OWN ulterior gain

It will be impossible

To find him

“BUT seek ye first

HIS kingdom and his righteousness

And all these things

Will be given to you

AS WELL”                                                                        Matthew 6:33

This is what happened

To me

I have been

PURELY seeking God-I think-

Since I was 22 years old

And I have NO IDEA

HOW I have made it this far

I BELIEVE

God has INTERCEDED for me

THROUGH OTHERS

Parents-siblings-friends-and neighbors

I will be 59 years old

Next year

And I HAVE FOUND GOD

IN THE DEEPEST DARKNESS

OF MY OWN SOUL

And God

Has FILLED that darkness

WITH HIS LIGHT=

THE LIGHT of HIS OWN SON

And the light

Of the sun

“Therefore

Do not worry about tomorrow

For tomorrow

Will take care of itself

EACH DAY

Has trouble enough

OF ITS OWN”                                                       Matthew 6:34

Fifty-nine years old next January

FOOD on the table

A ROOF over my head

And MORE loving family

And friends

Than a person

Has a right to have

“I seek you

With ALL my heart

Do not let me stray

From your commands”                                                   Psalm 119:10

“For the SON OF MAN

Came to seek

And to SAVE what was lost”                                      Luke 19:10

Seek ye first

THE KINGDOM OF GOD

And ALL things

Will be PROVIDED to you

But the TRUTH is

At least in my case

I didn’t

Even have to look

FINDING MEANING IN LIFE

WITNESS

FINDING MEANING IN LIFE

Where do you find meaning

In your life

Is it family

Is it friends

Is it some worthwhile cause

Greater than you

All worthy

All worthwhile

All very important

But I suggest to you

That you can never

Really truly find yourself

And the meaning of life

Until you find God

“For whoever finds me finds life

And receives favor from the Lord

But whoever fails to find me

Harms himself

All who hate me love death”                                            Proverbs 8:35-36

Leo Tolstoy was a great great man

Rich in wealth and fame

With a beautiful wife

But as time went on

He suffered serious bouts of depression

And even contemplated suicide

But he eventually

Found peace by reading the Bible

Particularly Jesus’ Sermon on the Mount

He dedicated the rest of his days

To building the Kingdom of God

On earth

“Whoever finds his life

Will lose it

And whoever loses his life

For my sake

Will find it”                                                 Matthew 10:39

Saint Augustine

Was a womanizer

And living a lost life

He even had

A mistress and an illegitimate son

His Mother---Saint Monica

Continued to pray for him

And his conversion

Augustine

Felt a deep yearning

For something more in his life

One day he just flipped open the Bible

And it opened to:

“Let us conduct ourselves properly

And in the day

Not in orgies and drunkenness

Not in promiscuity and licentiousness

Not in rivalry and jealousy

But put on the Lord Jesus Christ

And make no provision

For the desires of the flesh”                                    Romans 13:13-14

Leo Tolstoy found God

Saint Augustine found God

How about you

How about me

“You have made us for yourselves,

Oh Lord,

And our hearts are restless

Until they rest in you”                                                     Saint Augutine

In 1977

I had one life and death operation

Two more were to come that same year

For most of that year

I was flat on my back in my room

Unable to get out of my bed

It was then that I began

A deep deep search to find God

Jesus taught us how to pray

Many many years ago,

“Go in your room alone

Close the door

And pray to your Father in secret

Not a destination

And along the way

I found God

Family has stepped up

For me

Friends have stepped forward

For me

Churches have stepped forward

For me

Where do you find your meaning in life

Family, friends, a cause greater than yourself

“Seek first the KINGDOM OF GOD

And all these things

LIFE IS AN OPEN BOOK TEST

When I was in school

I used to love

To hear the instructor say,

“It’s an open book test”

In my early days

I used to think

That would make the test much easier

What I found out was---

It made the test harder

---much harder

Because I found out

That the questions

Were much much harder

And if you didn’t know

Where to look for the answers

Often times---You just ran out of time

My friends

Life is a lot like this

The Bible is comprised

Of 66 different books---chapters if you will

72 books---if you are Catholic

It has every answer

To life’s questions and problems in it

And it even

Gives us a few answers

That all of us can use

At all times

Answers like, prayer,

“Do not

Be anxious about anything

But in everything

By prayer and petition

With thanksgiving

Present your request to God

And the peace of God

Which transcends all understanding

Will guard your hearts

And your minds in Christ Jesus”                                         Philippians 4:6-7

Answers like, forgiveness,

“I tell you, NOT seven times

But seventy times seven”                                                      Matthew 18:22

Answers like love,

“Love the Lord your God

With all your heart

And with all your soul

And with all your mind

And with all your strength

………………

Love your neighbor as yourself

There is no commandment

Greater than these”                                                            Mark 12:30-31

Catch-all answers

For every single question--- to be sure

On how to treat others,

“If your enemy is hungry

Feed him

If he is thirsty

Give him something to drink

In doing this

You will keep burning coals on his head

DO NOT be overcome by evil

But OVERCOME evil with GOOD”                                      Romans 12:21-21

We have ALL the answers

To live

We just need to

                   OPEN THE BOOK

WITNESS

END TIMES---?

It almost amuses me

The number of times

A person/and or organization

Has predicted

THE END OF THE WORLD

Since Dec.31^st. 1999

Especially since-JESUS HIMSELF

Said he did not know when

“NO ONE KNOWS

About that day or hour

Not even

The angels in heaven

Nor the Son

But ONLY THE FATHER”                                                             Matthew 24:36

There you have it

Jesus-Himself-did not know

It is an UNKWOWN day and hour

And I question

To myself

As to whether

This world will totally end

Maybe something SO startling

Will happen

That the world

As we know it

Will just end       

One thing we DO know

Is that

It will be preceded

By the time of the antichrist

The antichrist

Is an evil person or power

A FALSE CHRIST

Expected at the end times

MAYBE

It is

The rampant materialism

That exists today

Maybe

The raw sexuality

That currently exists

Maybe

The emphasis on science

To the EXCLUSION

OF GOD

That exists right now

In our society

And around the globe

“Dear children

This is the last hour

And as you have heard

That the antichrist is coming

Even now

Many antichrists have come

This is how we know

It is the last hour”                                                                           1 John 2:18

MAYBE

THIS IS what

The antichrist is

THE PREVAILING ATTITUDE

That is anti-GOD

And anti-FAMILY

That exists in our world today

But REMEMBER

The antichrist is a LIAR

Having said ALL of that

WE must keep in mind

That we may be living

In the end times

WE must remember

That a day or year to us

Maybe a 1,000 or 10,000 years

To God

GOD’S TIMING

Is different than our timing

“Then the end will come

When he hands over the kingdom

TO GOD THE FATHER

After he has destroyed

ALL dominion, authority, and power

For he must REIGN

Until he has all his enemies

Under his feet

The last enemy to be destroyed

Is death”                                                                                          1 Corinthians 15:24-26

And BECAUSE

OUR GOD is a GOD OF LOVE

I BELIEVE

Our world-WILL END IN LOVE

“WHOEVER does not love

Does not know God

BECAUSE GOD IS LOVE”                                                                1 John 4:8
