SAINT IGNATIUS LOYOLA




Saint Ignatius
Was the youngest of eleven children
Of a Basque nobleman


He always wanted
To be a soldier
But was wounded in a battle in 1521


His broken leg was badly set
Was broken again and reset


After a bad surgery
He was left deformed
And walked with a limp
For the rest of his life


While recuperating
He wanted to read romantic stories
About knights


Instead he was given books
About the life of Christ
And some books
About the legends of Saints


His conversion followed


He decided to study Latin
And work for souls
And later studied Philosophy
For three years


He lived a life of Holiness
And while still a layman
He was imprisoned
For being a heretic


He gathered 6 disciples
And they took
Vows of chastity to serve the church
And in 1540 were given Papal approval


He was elected the first general
And for 15 years
He inspired-counseled
And directed with prudence and understanding


The group he founded
Was the Jesuits
And their educational words
Helped refute attacks
By Lutherans and Calvinists


Their work
Was modern and progressive


The Jesuits
Were prominent in the foreign missions
And one of their early pioneers
Was saint Francis Xavier


The Jesuits
Were generous with their allocation
Of time-money-and personnel
To this cause---foreign missions


Ignatius did much work
And founded houses for converted Jews
And for fallen women


Ignatius died on July 31^st ( his feast day ), 1556
And by then
The Jesuits numbered over 1,000
And were in nine European countries
Besides working in the foreign missions


He is the patron
Of spiritual exercises and retreats
And the patron
For many schools, churches, and colleges

I hate to say it=
But sometimes I get angry
At a person=or a HAPPENING


I TRY to bite my tongue=
But I sometimes SAY things
That I shouldn't=


And I am SORRY for
It LATER=does that
EVER happen to you?


ANGER is a DIFFICULT EMOTION
To MASTER=and I think
Sometimes it gets the BEST
Of all of us


BREATHE DEEPLY=and
GIVE your troubles over
To GOD


All things are PASSING


“I did NOT sit celebrating
In the circle
Of merrymakers


Under the weight
Of your hand
I sat alone
Because you FILLED ME

LET GO of your anger=
BITE your tongue=breathe DEEPLY=
TURN your troubles
OVER to God

Dear Lord=HELP us

WE can get so angry=and
Then later=NOT even remember
What it was even about?


LOOK at the first passage
The PSALMIST is so angry
That his ANGER is
Boarding on the physical

HELP US=let go of our anger=
And get out of our troubles
BY TRUSTING in you

By recognizing
Anger is a WASTED EMOTION

What is it that BRINGS
You DOWN in life? Chances

Something like=Greed=disdain=JUDGING OTHERS=
Selfishness=bullying=hoarding=lying=envy=or
MAYBE something else


Maybe you have one of these
BEHAVIORS=or maybe there is some
OTHER behavior that you have


Or MAYBE SOMEONE ELSE has
TREATED YOU with some of
These KINDS of behavior


NOTHING like being brought DOWN=
Or feeling QUITE LOW


“........MAY your COMPASSION
Quickly come to us


For we are BROUGHT very low” Psalm 79:8


When we are FEELING LOW
It is easy to see
How much we NEED
OUR COMPASSIONATE GOD


Or the compassion
Of ANOTHER human being


We need BOTH:
GOD'S COMPASSION=the compassion
Of our BROTHERS and SISTERS in Christ


And we need to
GIVE OUR COMPASSION
To others=
WHEN they are feeling low

OUR COMPASSION for others


God's LOVE is always
Ahead of us and another name
For this love
That WAITS for us
Is “COMPASSION”

The GOD OF COMPASSION

And Jesus uses it
OVER and over again to TEACH
His apostles=to teach his disciples=
And to still teach US TODAY


“He spoke to them ANOTHER PARABLE=

WHERE he tells us about a
MUSTARD SEED and where he tells

We ARE the MUSTARD SEED
And we will GROW
Into a GREAT FOLLOWER of Christ

2. And WHY did Jesus
   

Speak in parables?

So was FULFILLED

SAINT MARTHA=(the SAINT of the ACTIVE LIFE)

SAINT MARTHA
(the SAINT of the ACTIVE LIFE)


Martha was
A 1^st century disciple of Christ


She was the sister
Of Lazarus and Mary
And their home
Was especially loved
By Jesus


We see in Luke
How gently Jesus criticizes her
For choosing
The active life


“As Jesus and his disciples
Were on their way
He came to a village
Where a woman named Martha
Opened her home to him


She had a sister
Called Mary
Who sat
At the Lord’s feet
But Martha
Was distracted by all
The preparations
That had to be made


She came to him
And asked


‘Lord-don’t you care
That my sister
Has left me to do the work
By myself
TELL her to help me’


‘Martha Martha
The Lord answered


You are worried
And upset about many things
But only ONE thing is needed


MARY has chosen
WHAT is better

Of the rising of her brother-Lazarus

KEEP SOWING THE GOOD

KEEP SOWING THE GOOD


Often times=when we GROW
Our plants=or grow our fruit=
EVEN in our grass=the

Out to be doing something GOOD=
SOMETIMES we get some bad too


It is often difficult
To REALIZE=
The fruits of our GOOD INTENTIONS


KEEP SOWING THE GOOD

There is a real TEMPTATION

Are getting MIXED results


GOD ASSURES US
At the HARVEST
Our good intentions
Will be COLLECTED


The weeds
Will be burned


So KEEP SOWING=keep planting=
GOOD INTENTIONS all over
The world

For GOOD


To accomplish
What is NOW being done
The SAVING
Of many lives” Genesis 50:20


And when we work
FOR GOOD in this world


Our good INTENTIONS
CAN save many lives
At the HARVEST

The LORD will choose

As human beings=we have
FINITE lives=we are RESTRICTED
By all sorts of BOUNDARIES=and

GOD'S LOVE for us is
INFINITE=and by the GRACE of God
The grace of our Lord Jesus=
We can live FOREVER in him


“We are AFFLICTED in
Every way=

Do you ever feel like
You can't take anymore?
That your life is FULL
OF BURDEN? That your CUP
Is too full?


We are all human=
We are all FINITE=
We all have this
In common


But these COMMON limitations
That we all have=
Helps us DEVELOP
A COMPASSION for others


And gives us a CHANCE
To grow=
To find the NEED for God
In our lives


GOD'S LOVE IS INFINITE


“LISTEN to my cry

Rescue me
From those who pursue me
For they are too strong

What you NEED

APPROACH God's throne of grace

Need for God=
We can UNITE ourselves

With this comes the FREEDOM
That GOD'S LOVE for us

JAMES THE GREATER




James the Greater
Was a son of Zebedee
Was an Apostle
And together
With his brother John
Were called “sons of thunder”


“Going on from there
He saw two other brothers
James-son of Zebedee
And his brother John


They were in a boat
With their father Zebedee
Preparing their nets


Jesus called them
And immediately
They left their boat
And their father
And followed him” Matthew 4:21-22


Thus James
Was an original Apostle


We know that James
Along with Peter
And his brother John
Were present at the Transfiguration


“After six days
Jesus took with him
Peter, James and John-the brother of James
And led them up to a high mountain
By themselves” Matthew 17:1


There they saw Jesus
Talking with Moses and Elijah


And we know
That James and John were so presumptuous
SO HUMAN
That they asked for their spot
In the kingdom


“Teacher,” they said,
“We want you to do for us
Whatever we ask”


“What do you want me to do
For you,” Jesus asked


They replied
“Let one of us
Sit at the right
And the other at your left
In your glory”


And Jesus told them,
“Whoever wants to become great
Among you
Must be a servant
And whoever wants to be first
Must be slave to all” Matthew 10:35-44


In other words
They have to prove themselves first


As we too
Must prove ourselves
To be a servant of God


He was the first Apostle
To die for the Christian faith


Legend has it
That he preached the Gospel in Spain
After the Resurrection


That is why today
He is the patron Saint of Spain


He was put to death by the sword
By King Herod


So today-his feast today
We pray Dear Lord
That we prove ourselves just like Saint James


Only NOT by dying
For the faith


But by LIVING for it

ACCEPT the invitation

GOD the Father's WILL
Is that we love God


That we love ourselves
And that we LOVE ONE ANOTHER


God's will=JESUS' will is that
WE are all an extension
Of his family=IN LOVE


“He and all his family
Were devout and God-fearing


He gave GENEROUSLY

PRAYED to God regularly”

MEEK AND HUMBLE OF HEART


Jesus was MEEK AND HUMBLE
Of HEART=he told us the last
Will be FIRST=and that
We are to be the SERVANT'S-SERVANT


It is hard to say=but
I don't think many of us
REALLY take that to heart


“.........I am MEEK
And HUMBLE OF HEART” Matthew 11:29


ONLY a truly HUMBLE person
Like Jesus=would actually DARE
To call themselves humble
As Jesus does do


Jesus' HUMBLE HEART=his DIVINE heart
HELP us in our weakness
Helps us in our labors
And burdens
And gives us REST
When we need it


As FOLLOWERS of Jesus=
And as CHRISTIANS=we
Are to be meek and
Of humble heart TOO


I would venture to say
That many of us AMERICANS
Would be OFFENDED
If we are called “MEEK”


But that is WHO
Jesus was=and what we
Are CALLED to be


MEEK AND HUMBLE OF HEART


“But the MEEK
Will inherit the land
And enjoy peace
And prosperity” Psalm 37:11


“But I will
Leave within you
The MEEK AND HUMBLE


The remnant of Israel
Will TRUST
In the name of the LORD” Zephaniah 3:12

Dear FATHER=help us be
MEEK and HUMBLE
Like your Jesus


Psalm 102 also speaks
Of God's HUMILITY
“The Lord looked down
From his holy height........


To HEAR the groaning
Of the prisoners
To release those
DOOMED to die” Psalm 102:20-21


There are MANY things
That weigh us down
In this world


Many things weigh us down
And DRAIN our strength
Particularly our own failures
And our own sins


Yet Jesus INVITES US to
JOIN him and be
Meek and humble
CAN I do it?
Can we do it?


“'COME to me
ALL you who are weary
And burdened
And I will GIVE you rest


TAKE my yoke
Upon you
And LEARN form me
For I am gentle
And HUMBLE OF HEART


And you will FIND REST
For your souls

Outside of Jesus’ own mother
Mary Magdalene was probably
Jesus’ BEST FRIEND


She is often called
THE APOSTLE TO THE APOSTLES
Because he appeared to her first
And she carried to the news
To the rest of the men


Mary said to the gardener
NOT KNOWING he was Jesus,


“Sir, if you carried him away
Tell me where you have put him
And I will get him” John 20:15


The gardener then said, “Mary”


Mary then turned toward him
And cried out, “Rabboni,” which means Teacher John 20:16


She then went to tell the others
The news,


“I have seen the Lord” John 20:18


Jesus had been Mary’s teacher
About the Word of God
And it is said,
He cast out, “seven demons” from her


She may have been the sister
To Martha of Bethany and Lazarus
And anointed Christ’s feet


It is known
That she was present
At the crucifixion of Jesus
Along with his mother, the BELOVED disciple,
And some other women


She is
Considered to be
The patron Saint of repentant sinners
And of the contemplative life


May we FIND PEACE in Christ
As our sister, Mary Magdalene, did

There is always a CONFLICT
BETWEEN what we want for

By offering
A myriad of gifts


But Micah REMINDS them
That they must do the
RIGHT THING=love goodness
And walk humbly with God


And we MUST CHOOSE RIGHT
With our own lives
What God WANTS of us


“He refreshes my soul
He guides me
Along the RIGHT paths


For his name's sake” Psalm 23:3


“You come
To the help of those
Who gladly DO RIGHT

To sin against them

The wicked are ensnared

“When JUSTICE is done
It brings JOY
To the righteous

“And will not GOD
Bring about JUSTICE
For his CHOSEN ones


Who cry out to him

CONNECTING with the Father
That most important relationship


Maybe that should be
OUR FIRST ACTION everyday too


PRAYING to the Father-
Connecting to the Father-

The POWER of
A praying man-or a praying woman

The choices that we make
Dictates our actions


Our actions
Dictate our character

Dictates OUR DESTINY


Our destiny is INTERTWINED
With God and with others

Jesus CALLS each one of us
In this MODERN DAY world

PROPHETIC VOCATION

What does God see in you
That makes you SPECIAL?
What does God SEE in you
That he CHOOSES YOU?
"BLESSED is the nation
Whose God
IS the Lord
The people he CHOSE

Plenty far
WHEN you are Jesus
The SON OF GOD
And you can CREATE a miracle


But we MUST REMEMBER
We need NOT be Jesus
We need not be able
To PERFORM large miracles
To make a difference


ONE CAN and does
STILL make a difference
In today's world


We can
GIVE a sick friend
A ride to the Doctor's


We can
Do some grocery shopping
For a house bound friend


There is NO LIMIT
For the things that we can do
TO HELP OTHERS


To make a difference
In today's world


ONE PERSON CAN
And still does
Make a difference
In today's world


For WHAT IF
Our individual gestures and compassion


Our personal prayers
OUR LONE VOICE
For HELPING OTHERS


Was JOINED
By thousands of others
In today's world


For a CHRISTIAN'S
MAIN JOB
Is to
KEEP HOPE ALIVE
In others


And make a difference
For them


“WHY my soul
Are you so downcast


WHY so disturbed
Within me?


Put your HOPE IN GOD
For I will yet PRAISE HIM
My Savior and MY GOD” Psalm 42:5


God makes a difference
In the lives of others
By the GOOD WORKS
He encourages us to do


“NO DOUBT
There have to be DIFFERENCES
among you


To show
Which of you
Have GOD'S APPROVAL” 1 Corinthians 11:19


WE HAVE to be
WE NEED to be
The differences
In this world


The difference
That BRINGS HOPE to another


Our efforts
OUR PRAYERS
Make a differences


NEVER DOUBT
That your “one loaf”
STILL makes a difference

OUR GOD IS STRONGER=WISER=THAN US

OUR GOD IS STRONGER=
WISER=THAN US


It seems like a
Lot of people
Are going
Through DIFFICULTY in their lives
RIGHT NOW=me included


Physical problems=financial problems=
And relationship problems=some people
LOSING EVERYTHING


IF you are feeling this
Way=RECALL all the
WONDROUS things=
God has done for you


“Recall the wondrous DEEDS
That he has wrought


His portents
And the judgments
He has UTTERED
…............” Psalm 105:5


And if you are
STILL FEELING DOWN
Go back
And read the STORY OF JOB


A man who lost everything
QUESTIONED GOD
And was repaid with
EVEN GREATER TREASURES


“For the foolishness
Of God=is WISER
Than human wisdom


And the WISDOM of God
Is STRONGER
Than human strength” 1 Corinthians 1:25


“And the God
Of all grace
Who called you
To his eternal glory
In CHRIST


After you have
Suffered a little while
Will himself RESTORE you


And make you STRONG=
Firm=and steadfast” 1 Peter 5:11


READ GOD'S RESPONSE
To the questions
Job lays on him


He reminds JOB of
His SMALLNESS


He asks Job
If he can
LAY the foundations
Of the earth
And make the SEA


Yes we=you= me=
All of us
Are PART of God's
WONDROUS DEEDS
And PRECIOUS like Job
And all human beings


God is STRONGER AND WISER
Than us=
For we are small


We all feel
Pain and fear
But the truth is
We are STRONGER TOGETHER
When we are UNITED


“My goal
Is that
They may be encouraged
In HEART


And UNITED in LOVE
So that they may
Have the FULL RICHES
Of complete understanding


In order
That they may know
The mystery of God
Namely=Christ........” Colossians 2:2


We are small=bur our GOD
Is STRONGER AND WISER
Than us=and this helps


Let us be UNITED
With him=the FATHER=
And the SON
For all of ETERNITY

THE TRUTH IS A SACRED THING

TRUTH IS A SACRED THING


We LIVE in a
World where the people
Who tell the TRUTH
Seem to be LESS
And LESS every day


IF it is of
Any consolation to you=
It wasn't any different
During the TIME OF CHRIST


The TRUTH is of GOD
The truth is a
SACRED THING


“But the Pharisees said=
'He drives out demons
By the prince of demons'” Matthew 9:34


The Pharisees were always looking
To LIE about Jesus=they
DEFAMED him and his ministry
EVERY chance that they got


They blatantly and FALSELY ACCUSED
Jesus of--------
Invoking the devil
To accomplish MIRACLES


They did not like Jesus
Because he was KIND=THUTHFUL=
And merciful=
And they were not


The truth is a SACRED THING


“Lord who may dwell
In your SACRED tent?
Who may live-
On your holy mountain?” Psalm 15:1


“ONE person considers one day
More SACRED than another


Another considers
Every day alike” Romans 14:5


“If anyone destroys GOD'S TEMPLE
God will destroy
That person


For God's temple is SACRED
And you together
ARE that temple” 1 Corinthians 3:17


The Pharisees not only
Lied about Jesus=but
Also committed BLASPHEMY


Jesus was a HOLY PERSON
Jesus was a SACRED person and thing
God is truth
Jesus is TRUTH


And truth is the CENTERPIECE
Of the gospel
That was REVEALED by Jesus


THRUTH IS A SACRED THING


“For the law was
Given through Moses=
Grace and TRUTH
Came through Jesus Christ” John 1:17


“I speak the TRUTH
In Christ--------I am not lying
My CONSCIENCE confirms it
Through the HOLY SPIRIT” Romans 9:1


Truth is UNDER ATTACK
In today's world=
The REAL TRUTH is
Called FAKE=unreliable=
Or fictitious


ITRY to always tell the TRUTH


NOT telling the truth
Is IRREVERENT to God=
And to society


TRY to ALWAYS tell the truth
Try to always SPEAK the truth
In DIGNITY and RESPECT


THE TRUTH IS A SACRED THING!

EVERY GOOD THING

EVERY GOOD THING


Do you feel
As I do=that
EVERY GOOD THING in
Your life=is from God?


And every bad thing is
From CIRCUMSTANCES=the devil=
Nature=or something that you /I did


See GOD'S GRACE in
Your life=See God's grace
In your health


The fact that
You have lived as
Long as you have


In your finances=the fact
That you have ANY income
At all


And in your RELATIONSHIPS
For the FAMILY and FRIENDS
That you do have


“The Lord is GRACIOUS
And merciful=
Slow to anger
And of great KINDNESS” Psalm 145:8


Sometimes we get
BLINDSIDED by life
Sometimes the day's events
And our misgivings
CONSPIRE to bring us down


But we STILL have
An excellent prognosis=we
Have our life TODAY


We have our finances
Whatever shape
They are in


And for every relationship
NOT working out
We have many
That do


Dear Lord
HELP US to see
EVERY GOOD THING
In our lives


“For the LORD
Is GOOD
And his love
Endures FOREVER


His faithfulness continues
THROUGH all generations” Psalm 100:5


“Whoever seeks GOOD
Finds favor
But evil comes to one
Who searches for it” Proverbs 11:27


“And we KNOW
That in all things
God works for the GOOD


Of those who LOVE HIM
Who have been called
According to his PURPOSE” Romans 8:28


Hear that=the things
IN your life=the events
Are WORKING
For your own GOOD
For the PURPOSES God
Has ENTRUSTED you with
In your life


“MANY are the plans
In a person's heart


But it is the LORD'S
PURPOSE that prevails” Proverbs 19:21


I have SURVIVED a life
FULL of illness=more close calls
Than I care to remember


But as I sit here today=I am
HAPPY=I am happy for ALL
The good things in my life


EVERY GOOD THING


In Jesus' name and in the name of his GLORIOUS FATHER
