When I travel


I get nervous
I get worried
I feel the UNCERTAINTY


But I FIND COMFORT
In KNOWING that the
Lord is my GUIDE
My ever present=tour guide


“The Lord will
GUIDE you always


And give you plenty
Even on the parched land” Isaiah 58:11


When you TRAVEL
You think about everything
That can go wrong


BOTH while traveling
And at HOME


Stop thinking and FOCUS on
What you need to do
Focus on


What you can see
On what all that can
GO RIGHT


Traveling=let the LORD
Be your TOUR GUIDE


“GUIDE me
In your truth
And teach me


For you are
God my Savior


And my hope
Is in you
All day long” Psalm 25:5


“When you walk
They will GUIDE YOU


When you sleep
They will
Watch over you


When you awake
They will speak to you” Proverbs 6:22


“But when he
The Spirit of TRUTH comes


He will GUIDE YOU
Into all the truth” John 16;13


WHEN I used to drive
I found it relaxing
I found it COMFORTING


But flying makes me NERVOUS=
But the Lord is
With us


NO MATTER where we go
All over the world


Finding our COMFORT=
When we travel
Finding our comfort
In the LORD


The Lord calms our FEARS!


“Fools give full vent
To their rage


But the wise
BRING CALM
In the end” Proverbs 29:11


“But the one
Who prophesies


Speaks to people
For their strengthening-
Encouraging-and COMFORT” 1 Corinthians 14:3


So when you travel=especially
By air


Take a deep breath=relax
And let the LORD
BE YOUR GUIDE

THE LOON WENT THE WRONG WAY

“The Loon Went the Wrong Way”

When I was a child, the 4 families always went on vacation together for a week or two.  In the early

Years, we all went to Cape May, New Jersey.  In the later years, it was Ocean City, Maryland.

And finally, the Outer Banks, in North Carolina.  My Uncle John was the mastermind, and usually

2 families stayed together in side-by-side houses, or we all stayed in the same house.

One year, we were all traveling together to Ocean City, Maryland. We were all following each other,

And we all had CB radios.  That particular year, I believe we had 4 or 5 cars, with my Dad tucked in

Next-to-last.  My cousin, Donny, was last, to keep an eye on my Dad.

My Dad had a habit of doing his own thing and going the wrong way.  About a ½ an hour before a

Specific turn on our way down, everybody starts talking about how up here, at such-and-such mile-

Marker you have to “bear to your right.”

So we get to the mile-marker, the first 3 cars bear to the right, and my Dad keeps going straight.

My cousin, Donny,  starts screaming over the CB radio, “the loon ( as he was affectionately called ),

Went the wrong way.  The loon went the wrong way.”

To make a long story short, they chased us down, we continued on our trip, and we had a wonderful vacation..

When we GATHER around
A table
To SHARE a meal


When we
Bring guests
INTO OUR HOME=
We see them up CLOSE


We recognize their faces
And their stories
AS OUR OWN


Our own family
And friends=
SEEING them
Through the DIVINE PERSPECTIVE


They are no longer them
They are us=
They are OUR
FAMILY AND FRIENDS


We recognize them
For who they are=
OUR NEIGHBORS
They are us


Getting closer
To the DIVINE PERSPECTIVE


“The Lord is
CLOSE to the brokenhearted


And saves those
Who are crushed in spirit” Psalm 34:18


“'Do not come
ANY CLOSER'
God said


'Take off your sandals
For the place=where
You are standing
Is holy ground'” Exodus 3:5


“I will
Bring them near
And he will
Come CLOSE to me-------


For who is he
Who will devote himself

We all want
That DIVINE PERSPECTIVE=
We all want others
To be close to us
Just like FAMILY


Come CLOSER to God
Come closer to family
And FRIENDS


ENJOY that divine perspective
Of God and Jesus=
With one another
SHARE a meal


FEEL the holiness of God
And the holiness
Of one another


May we all find
That DIVINE PERSPECTIVE
Of God
With one another


“Through these
He has given us

And precious promises


So that through them
You may participate
In the DIVINE NATURE........” 2 Peter 1:4

Come CLOSER to the
Divine perspective

To the PAST

And at PUBLIC EVENTS


I pray that something

Is helping others=
Even at the COST

Can we

He reached out=
Because HIS LOVE
Was INCLUSIVE of everyone

To ALL OTHERS=
We should do this too


HELP THEM BELONG TOO!


This means reaching out
To the BORE
In the room


Or reaching out
To the person
SITTING ALONE at the party


HELP OTHERS TOO!

In his youthful years=

But in his later years

From his spiritual presence
And he became CARELESS

But we all KNOW=
It doesn't take our AGE

Forgetful=or negligent
In our RELATIONSHIP
With God


It is EASY
To slip AWAY
From the PRESENCE OF GOD


BE CAREFUL=
Or you will
Slip AWAY from God too


PRAY=read the bible
Go to church=
Say the ROSARY


Do what is RIGHT AND GOOD
For it is EASY
To fall away from God
Like Solomon did


“Is not WISDOM
Found among the aged?

Are the pride

We should be getting
CLOSER to God as we MATURE=

“Jesus CALLED his disciples to himself-and from them he CHOSE TWELVE-whom he named APOSTLES” Luke 6:13


THE APOSTLES had lots of dirty laundry-so to speak-WHEN looked upon by the outsiders---in others WORDS they were sinners---the SAME as you and I—but we ALL are sinners-including the pharisees-the sadducees-and even OUR pastors and teachers of today


BUT they had something that set them apart-they KNEW that they were sinners and they had the DESIRE to keep on TRYING to get it right-and eventually they did


THEY were ill-suited for the job of APOSTLESHIP-yet Jesus saw this something in them-THIS PURENESS of heart-DO WE (you and I have this same quality)


IF WE DO-Jesus will CALL US to be on his team-to CONTINUE his work in this modern day 21^st century


IT IS a great day to be ALIVE in GOD'S EVERLASTING LOVE for us-and a GREA DAY to be ON THE LORD'S TEAM

In a movie called “The Replacements”
Gene Hackman looks out at his football squad
And says,
“You gotta have heart---miles and miles of heart”


Hackman plays Jimmy McGinty---the coach
Of a rag tag football team
That is replacing the regular team
Who are out on strike


As the movie ends
The regular team has settled their strike
And are coming back the next week for the playofss
---IF they make them


McGinty-Hackman doesn’t say it
But you almost get the feeling
That McGinty would rather
Go to battle next week
With this rag tag team of losers
Than his regular team


“You gotta have heart---
Miles and miles of heart”


I wonder
If this is how Jesus felt some 2000 years ago


That he would rather do battle
With the “losers” of his day---the Apostles
Than the perennial and accepted religion


HEART---figuratively, the center of a person
That which gives a person direction


The apostles and disciples HAD HEART
They were focused on God and others
They had COMPASSION
They CARED and they LOVED


In Mark 7
Jesus condemns some of the teachers of the law
For following tradition
Without obedience to the LAWS OF GOD
( love, kindness, forgiveness, and compassion )


The Pharisees and teachers question Jesus
About his disciples eating with unclean hands


Jesus responds,


“Isaiah was right
When he prophesies about the hypocrites
As it is written:


These people honor me
With their lips
But their hearts are far from me
They worship me in vain
Their teachings
Are but rules taught by men


You have let go of
The commands of God
And are hanging on
To the traditions of men” Mark 7:6-8


The implication here
Is that the teachers of the day
Were so bogged down in tradition
That they forgot the laws of God


Loving God---loving and caring for others


You gotta have heart
MILES AND MILES OF HEART


The implication here is
That Jesus’ disciples and apostles had heart


They may have not known the tradition
But they knew the law of God---LOVE


The Apostles had heart
Do you and I


Would Jesus look out at us
Like McGinty did of his band of replacement players
Would he look at us and admiringly say


“YOU GOTTA HAVE HEART
MILES AND MILES OF HEART”

Today also is the
REMEMBRANCE of another
Servant of God=
Saint Bernadette Soubirous


She was responsible with OUR
MOTHER Mary=for the feast day
Today=OUR LADY OF LOURDES


I can just imagine her
Looking up to heaven
And saying “MY TRUE HOME”


Solomon and Saint Bernadette=
Two servants of God


But we too can
Be SERVANTS=a true servant
Of God


“Not so=with you
Instead=whoever wants
To be great among you
Must be your SERVANT” Matthew 20:26


“Rather he made himself
NOTHING=by taking
The very nature
Of a SERVANT=
Being made in HUMAN LIKENESS” Philippians 2:7


“I no longer
Call you SERVANTS

Does not know
His master's business


Instead I have
Called you friends


For everything

From my Father

Bernadette was a
TRUE servant and FRIEND
Of God
May we FOLLOW
In her footsteps


She grew up
The OLDEST=of nine children
And she was sent
To live with relatives
Because her parents
Were destitute


She was always ILL-
Suffering from terrible asthma
Since she was a toddler


OUR BLESSED MOTHER
Appeared to her
When she was 14


And several other times
Over the course
Of two weeks


At first=her family and
No one else believed her
And she was SEVERELY PUNISHED


And she was RIDICULED
By others too


She was truly a “SERVANT”
Of God=as she
Testified=to the truth
Through it ALL


May she be OUR
SHINING EXAMPLE=as we too
Endure trials
With courage and FAITH


And become=SERVANTS OF GOD


Our LADY=please pray for us=
In the name of your SON=Jesus=and the GLORIOUS FATHER OF US ALL

Our Lady of Lourdes
Is a title for the Blessed Virgin Mary
Used by Roman Catholics=
In honor of apparitions of Mary
And for many miracles
That are said to have occurred there
At Lourdes, France


On the evening of
January 18^th, 1977
I developed a tremendous pain/pressure
In my groin area
And I was admitted to the hospital
The next day


I WILL NEVER FORGET


I was rushed
To the emergency room
The next day
With a perforated bowel


I WILL NEVER FORGET


The first apparition
Of our Lady of Lourdes
Was made February 11^th, 1858
By Bernadette Soubirous
A 14-year-old peasant girl
Who admitted to her mother
That a lady
Spoke to her
In the cave of Massabielle
About a mile from her home


The apparitions of the “LADY”
Were reported
On seventeen further occasions
That year


After the surgery
I laid there
For two weeks
With tubes coming
Out of every orifice in my body
In a state BETWEEN life and death


I WILL NEVER FORGET


The apparition
Asked Bernadette to dig in the garden
And drink
From the spring she found there
And she did


From that day onward
The spring
Has produced 27,000 gallons of water per week


My health
Took a turn for the worse
Dr. Christian was called in
To work on me
And Father Newell was called in
To administer the SACRAMENT of the sick


My temperature
Reached a high of 108 degrees
And my blood count went down to three
And I had many blood transfusions


It looked like death was imminent


I WILL NEVER FORGET


Many miracles have occurred
At our Lady of Lourdes
Some proven AUTHENTIC MIRACLES
And many not reported at all


The day
I walked out of the hospital
Was February 11^th, 1977
The day of the first reported miracle
At Lourdes, France in 1858


I will TESTIFY for God
And give thanks to God
For every day
Of the rest of my life

CRAZY LIKE A FOX

CRAZY LIKE A FOX










My grandfather, Carl, was an interesting man. I don’t think too many people would
Argue with me if I said he was a little bit mean and ornery. But he liked me.


He played sandlot football-middle linebacker-until he was 50 years old. At 23, he
Was offered a professional baseball contract to play for the New York Giants. He
Turned it down to marry my grandmother, Ruth. There wasn’t a lot of money in
Professional sports in those days.


My main memories of my grandfather, Carl, was when he was an older man and
Lived with us.


He used to sit in the red swivel chair in our living room and swat everyone with his cane.
In fact, my mother had 2 brothers, each with three kids. One set of kids he would swat
With his cane. The other set he would let go by.


My mom and dad both worked. When they would go to bed, he would turn all the lights
On and off and make as much noise as he could. There were a couple of times that I
Thought my father was going to kill him. In fact, he became so difficult my parents
Tried to put him in the Little Sisters of the Poor. But when dad took him on the Interview, he wouldn’t open his eyes. The nuns said he would be too difficult for
Them. And then, on the way home, he shoplifted two packages of razor blades.
I really thought dad would kill him that time.


My grandfather never went out alone. After he died, we found out that after we all
Went to work and school, he went to the Garden theatre. The Garden theatre was an
x-rated pornographic theatre.


For all his nastiness, I will always love my grandfather. He is probably the reason I am
Alive today. When I was 22, and was given 0% chance to live, my grandfather prayed
That God would take him instead of me. The day that I left Saint John’s hospital, my
Grandfather took a stroke and went into Saint John’s hospital. He died two weeks later.
I never saw him alive again.


I can’t tell you how many times that I have thought of him over the past 30 years.
I love you granddad.

Today is the feast day of Our Lady of Lourdes---a day of miracles. Though I have always been ill---I know it was a miracle that I walked out of Saint John’s hospital---
This day in 1977.


My grandfather prayed that God would take him instead of me.
On February 26^th, 1977, God did.


February 11^th, 2020=will be the 43^rd ANNIVERSARY of MY MIRACLE

The LIGHT shall rise

That when we are CONFRONTED
By HUMAN SUFFERING


Our call is NOT
To look to another
To fix it all


Our call is to
LEAVE our comfort zone=
STEP FORWARD


For the NEEDY=and embrace
Our brothers and sisters
In Christ


BE THE LIGHT=
In this world-
Be the light
In this dark dark world


“The Lord wraps himself-

As with a garment

To the political talk


We LIVE in a spiritually

We were born to FIGHT
GOD'S BATTLES=and there is
NOTHING stopping us from
Being that LIGHT


In Matthew=chapter 5
Jesus gives us the BEATITUDES=
And he tells us
We are BLESSED


“BLESSED are
The PURE in heart
For they will see God” Matthew 5:8


This year=no matter
What else happens=
It is TIME for us


To step forward=and
BE=LIGHT
To our country=and our world


In the name of Jesus=and OUR FATHER=our ONGOING LIGHT

SERVICE AND NOT BOASTING

SERVICE AND NOT BOASTING


It took the apostles=
Awhile to GRASP the
MISSION of Jesus' life


It takes us awhile too=
In fact=some of us
NEVER do get it


Jesus' life was a life
Of SERVICING OTHERS=and NOT
Boasting about
Who he was=and
What he was
GOING TO DO


“Come away by yourselves
To a deserted place
And rest awhile” Mark 6:31


In today's first reading=
A young Solomon=admits
His inadequacy


And HUMBLY asks God
For wisdom=
What a great LESSON=
Of SERVICE
For all of us


God said to Solomon
“Ask God for whatever
You want me
To Give you” 1 Kings 3:5


And Solomon was
Granted WISDOM


“God said to him=
'Since you have
Asked for this


And NOT a long life=
Or wealth for yourself


NOR for the death
Of your enemies
BUT FOR DISCERNMENT
In administering justice


I will DO
What you have asked
I will give you
A WISE AND DISCERNING HEART.......'” 1 Kings 3:11-12


SERVICE and not boasting


And in today's gospel
The apostles RETURN
And report all they
Have done
And accomplished
By LISTENING to Jesus


We can accomplish=
So much with our lives too
By listening TO JESUS


They were AMAZED
By what they had
Accomplished in Jesus' name


“Without me
You can do NOTHING” John 15:5


Live lives of SERVICE
To God


“So Christ himself
Gave the apostles=
The prophets=the evangelists=


The pastors and teachers
To equip his people
For WORKS OF SERVICE


So that the body
Of Christ
May be built up


Until we all=
Reach UNITY in the faith........” Ephesians 4:11-13


The apostles eventually GOT IT=
As they SERVED Christ Jesus
After the Resurrection


Do we get it?
Do I get it?
Let us LIVES OF SERVICE
And find out

UPHOLDING THE GREATER GOOD


Today we read about
The COURAGE
And conviction=
Of John the Baptist


He admonished Herod
For his INFIDELITY=
In taking his brother's wife


And he LOST his LIFE=
His very head
For doing so


“When Herod heard
John the Baptist speak=
He was very


Much PERPLEXED=
Yet he
Liked to listen to him” Mark 6:20


Despite John's righteousness=
Herod could have
Had John
Executed IMMEDIATELY=


Yet he WAITED until he
Made a promise
To his wife's daughter=
His DAUGHTER-IN-LAW


Meanwhile John was
UPHOLDING the GREATER GOOD
Of God


He gave up his
LIFE=for the
People of GOD'S KINGDOM


Sometimes we have
To STAND for something
In this world too


We have to
UPHOLD THE GREATER GOOD TOO


John was=and we
Need to be
UPRIGHT men and women


“In the land of Uz=
There LIVED a man
Whose name
Was Job=


This man was blameless
And UPRIGHT=
He feared God
And shunned evil” Job 1:1


“The Lord detests
The sacrifice
Of the wicked


But the prayer
Of the UPRIGHT
Pleases him” Proverbs 15:8


Yes John was
An UPRIGHT MAN=
And his life=
Pleased both God and Jesus=
He prepared the way
For his COUSIN


We have to do
GOOD=with our lives=
We have to UPHOLD
THE GREATER GOOD


And stand up for GOD
And Jesus with our lives=
We have to be
UPRIGHT PEOPLE TOO


“Rather he must be
Hospitable=one who loves
WHAT IS GOOD


Who is self-controlled-UPRIGHT=
Holy and disciplined” Titus 1:8


That is what John was
That is
WHO we must be too


Like John=
We are called
To RISK


To RAISE our voices=
And protect
THE GREATER GOOD


Dear Lord=we pray=
HERE WE ARE=SEND US


In the name of Jesus=and our ever GOOD=God the FATHER

What we have to DO

In today's world?


What kind of MISSIONARIES
Do we need
To be TODAY?


“He said to them=
'Wherever you ENTER
A house=stay there
Until you leave
From there


Whatever place
Does NOT WELCOME you
Or listen to you


Leave there-
And shake the dust
Off your feet=IN TESTIMONY
Against them'” Mark 6:10-11


Seems kind of HARSH=
Doesn't it?”


In those days
The WORD of God=spread
By mouth=and by feet


But today=we
Have to LIVE it=
We have to be
An EXAMPLE OF IT


The LIVING WORD
Of God


WELCOMING the Lord=
The Word of God
In our hearts


“And whoever
WELCOMES one such child
In my name
WELCOMES ME” Matthew 18:5


“Anyone who WELCOMES them
Shares in
Their wicked work” 2 John :11


MOST of the world today
Has heard of Jesus
And his teachings


They have ALREADY DECIDED
Whether to
ACCEPT those teachings
Or not


GOD lived in my HOUSEHOLD
Growing up=
Jesus lived
In my household too


We WELCOMED the
Word of God
In our home=
As MANY of
The other homes=beside us
Did too


And I have to WONDER=
How many of TODAY'S HOMES
Really do?


We need to
RECEIVE the Word of GOD
In our hearts=and LIVE IT


“Every WORD OF GOD
Is flawless


He is a shield
To those
Who take refuge in him” Proverbs 30:5


“Take the
Helmet of salvation
And the sword
Of the SPIRIT
Which is
The WORD OF GOD” Ephesians 6:17


So WELCOME the Lord
Your God into your heart


Every day
Of your lives


And read the BIBLE
And read the WORD OF GOD
Every day


BE the LIVING example of
THE WORD OF GOD


In Jesus' name=and in the name=of our living-loving=WELCOMING FATHER

DIFFICULT=KEEP FORWARD IN CHRIST JESUS

DIFFICULT=KEEP MOVING FORWARD
IN CHRIST JESUS


We LIVE in difficult
Times today=I am SURE
They were DIFFICULT
Back in Jesus' times too


Especially when HE
Went back
To his home town=and
They REJECTED HIM


“He was amazed
At their
LACK OF FAITH” Mark 6:6


What a difficult TIME=
It must have been
For Jesus


To go back to
Your home=difficult
With DOUBT=blank stares
And rejection


These days are difficult times
For us too=
In today's world


This world LACKS FAITH=
And there is violence=conflict=
And so LITTLE HARMONY
In this world


All we can do
Is keep
MOVING FORWARD
In Christ Jesus


Keep being a PRESENCE
Of God=and Jesus
And LOVE=in this world
FOR OTHERS


Hopefully when others=
Think of us=others will THINK
Of God and LOVE TOO


“In the shelter
Of your PRESENCE
You hide them
From all human intrigues


You keep them safe
In your dwelling
From accusing tongues” Psalm 31:20


“Where can I go
From your Spirit?
Where can I flee
FROM YOUR PRESENCE?” Psalm 139:7


“To him-
Who is able


To keep you
From stumbling
And to present you


Before his GLORIOUS PRESENCE
Without fault
And with great joy........” Jude :24


WHERE was the FAITH
Of Jesus' family=friends=
And neighbors=
OF HIS COMMUNITY?


How DIFFICULT it
Must have been
For Jesus


But Jesus kept
MOVING FORWARD in faith


And that is all
We can KEEP ON DOING=
Is keep moving forward
IN FAITH=in this world


“For in the gospel
The righteousness of God
Is revealed


A righteousness
That is BY FAITH
From first to last


Just as it is written
'The righteous
Will live BY FAITH'” Romans 1:17


So let us KEEP LIVING
In the BEATITUDES
In this DIFFICULT WORLD


Let us FOLLOW
The example of Jesus=
And encourage others=
As we keep MOVING FORWARD
In the LOVE of Jesus


In Jesus' name=and in the name=of OUR EVER LOVING FATHER

AN EXPANSIVE LOVE LIKE JESUS


Today we read
About David MOURNING
The loss
Of his son=Absalom


It is NORMAL to mourn
When we lose=
Our family and friends
In this world


What else can we do?=
THE POWER over life and death
RESTS with God alone


“Mt son Absalom!........if only
I HAD DIED instead
Of you=Absalom-
My son-my son” 2 Samuel 19:1


This quotation brings back
MEMORIES for me


WHEN it looked like=I was
Going to die=when I was 22


My dad PRAYED=”WHY doesn't God
Take me=instead of him?”


And so was my GRANDFATHER
WALLMAN=and I believe
He actually did


He actually died while
I was in the HOSPITAL=
And I never did see
Him again


David had a DEEP LOVE
For his son=as I did
And still do
FOR my family and friends


AN EXPANSIVE
Kind of love=
LIKE Jesus


“........these are
The things
God has revealed
To us
By his Spirit


The SPIRIT teaches
All things
Even the DEEP THINGS
Of God” 1 Corinthians 2:10


“They must keep hold
Of the DEEP TRUTHS


Of the faith
With a clear conscience” 1 Timothy 3:9


How deep
Is our LOVE?
Does our love
TRANSCEND fairness?


Are we living
AN EXPANSIVE love
Like Jesus?


A love that
TRANSCENDS all things


Does our love INCLUDE
Even those=
Who have hurt us
Or BETRAYED US?


And EXPANSIVE LOVE
Like Jesus


A living-loving life=
A love
That transcends all things=
And is INCLUSIVE of all


A PURE and sincere love
For all


“The one
Who has clean hands
And a PURE HEART


Who does not-
Trust an idol=
Or swear
By a false god” Psalm 24:4


It is OK to mourn=
For those we have loved
And have LOST


But TRY to live
With the KIND OF LOVE-
Jesus taught and lived


AN EXPANSIVE TYPE OF LOVE


In the names of Jesus=and our ALL living-loving FATHER
