THE ANSWER=to a FALSE PROVERB

 

God SPOKE to Israel=About a COMMON PROVERB=used then

 

-The IDEA=was that=the PRESENT GENERATION=was being

FALSELY PUNISHED=For what the Father’s did

-ie.

According to the PROVERB==The CHILDREN=were

Being punished=for what THE FATHERS DID

Th children=had a SOUR TASTE=in their mouth

 

-According to the PROVERB=GOD WAS BEING UNFAIR

God did NOT LIKE=the proverb=Even though it was popular

 

MESSAGE=

PROPHETS were a POPULAR FORM of media=in the ancient world

 

LINE 4

The ANSWER to=THE FALSE PROVERB

 

God told them=ALL SOULS=Belong to God

Ie.      BOTH the FATHERS and the Children

 

-The soul that sins=SHALL DIE

God has AUTHORITY=over all souls

Ie.      FATHERS and sons

JUDGMENT over every guilty soul

 

LINES 5-9=THE PROMISE OF LIFE=for the RIGHTEOUS MAN

If FAITHFUL to the Covenant=Made with Moses

 

If a man is JUST=God will not condemn=His soul to death

God PROMISED=that if righteous=Your soul would LIVE=before him

 

Lines 10-13

The WICKED SON=of the Righteous Father

 

Ezekiel 18:5-9

IF son is wicked=He will bear=his own guilt

 

Ezekiel tells the people=THE WICKED man=is the REVERSE

Of those described Ezekiel=18:5-9

 

Ezekiel says=The proverb is WRONG

Ie Righteous Father=Son must account=for his own sins

HIS OWN SOUR GRAPES=teeth on edge

 

Lines 14-18

The RIGHTEOUS SON=of the wicked Father

Ie.      Ezekiel 10-13

 

-IF THE SON=Does not commit the =sins of the Father

He LIVES a righteous life

Ie.      EZEKIEL Describes the righteous man=in Ezekiel 18:5-9

 

IF the son is righteous=He will NOT SUFFER=for the sins of the Father

Ie.      FATHER sour grapes

SON=good teeth=NOT on edge

 

THE RIGHTEOUSNESS=in a son=Would not justify=A WICKED FATHER

OWN GRAPES=own teeth

 

LINES 19-20

THE PRINCIPAL=OF THE INDIVIDUAL SOUL

Ie.    EACH SOUL=Bears his own guilt

 

-GOD asks the PEOPLE=WHY shouldn’t the SON=be guilty of

What the Father did?

 

God tells the people=HE LOOKS at the soul INDIVIDUALLY!

IN REGARD to eternity=God judges each soul INDIVIDUALLY

-The Son=SHALL NOT BEAR=the guilt of the Father

Nor the Father=the Son

Ie.      TWO EXCEPTIONS

 

Adam=GUILTY for everyone

RIGHTEOUSNESS of Jesus Christ!

 

LINES 21-23

GOD’S DESIRE=for the wicked to TURN

 

-THE DOOR is OPEN=For repentance and RESTORATION

-FULL RESTORATION=for the man=Who TURNS BACK to God=Even for the wicked man

Ie.       THIEF ON THE CROSS

 

-God TAKES NO PLEASURE=In the death of the wicked

GOD’S HEART=Is for the wicked man to REPENT

 

LINE 24

GOD PROMISES JUDGMENT=to the RIGHTEOUS=who turn away

-No reprieve=for the man=Who TURNS AWAY from God

 

-The righteousness=will NOT be remembered=A TRAGIC TURN

Lines 25-29

GOD’S FINAL DECLARATION of=THE FAIRNESS=of his ways

 

-ISRAEL was NOT FAIR=In Hoping to find judgment=FOR RIGHTEOUSNESS OR GUILT

Of prior generations

 

GOD’S RESPONSE=has to be=STRONG and REPETITIVE

Because Israel’s ways=were so DEEPLY INGRAINED

 

LINES 30-32

THE SUMMARY STATEMENT=and call to ACTION

 

-NO COMMUNITY or family salvation

DAMNATION Was individual

 

-EACH PERSON=and RESPONSIBILITY=Judged individually BEFORE GOD

-ABSOLUTELY NECESSARY=for each individual=to REPENT to God

 

Ie.     COVENANT

Deuteronomy  30:1-6=Jeremiah 31 and 32=Ezekiel Chapters 11 and 36 and 37

 

-          LIFE TRANSFORMATION POSSIBLE=for those=who actually REPENT

GOD does NOT want to see death=Of anyone’s soul

 

LASTLY=no confidence=Or despair=BASED on FORFATHERS

Or descendants=ALL INDIVIDUALLY

 

TURN BACK TO GOD=and LIVE
