THE LIFE STORY OF SAINT PATRICK

 

 

There has been much controversy

Surrounding the life of Saint Patrick

Both as to what he did

And what he didn’t do

 

Patrick was British by birth

He lived during the fifth century

His father was on the town council

And was a deacon

His grandfather was a priest

 

When he was young

He was captured by Irish pirates

And was made a slave for 6 years

 

During these years

Patrick began to pray

And draw close to God

Which was in contrast to his earlier years

When he “knew NOT the true God”

 

After the 6 years

He escaped or was freed

And did some traveling

But almost starved to death

 

Patrick returned home to his family

A changed man

And trained to become a priest

 

After some contact with the Papacy

Patrick succeeded Palladius

To be the first bishop of the Irish

To believe in Christ

 

Patrick worked principally in Northern Ireland

Organizing the church

And had many missionary journeys

From there

 

Patrick was not especially learned

But lived with a sincere simplicity

And deep pastoral care

 

He worked to abolish paganism and idolatry

And made no distinction

Among classes of people

HE LOVED ALL

 

He himself was ready and willing

To accept imprisonment and death

For his FAITH IN CHRIST

 

Because of being a slave and fugitive

He learned to completely trust God

 

The historical Patrick is much different

Than the legendary Patrick

And much more interesting

 

He DID NOT convert Ireland single-handedly

In fact---it took MANY evangelists

And many generations to accomplish

 

But make no mistake

He was the PRIMARY INSTRUMENT of God

In getting it all started

 

He remains the most popular Saint

From Ireland

And he is Ireland’s patron

To this day

 

His cult spread form Ireland to Europe

In the middle ages

And in modern times

To the United States and Australia

Where it still flourishes on his feast day

MISSED OPPORTUNITY

 

 

 

 

In the 13^th chapter

Of Saint Luke’s Gospel

Luke tells the story

Through parables

As Jesus begins to

Pass through the towns

For the last time

 

Unfortunately

For many of the people

They were not interested

 

Today

We have the Word of God

And unfortunately for us

Many of us are not interested

 

In life

Many of the economic opportunities

Are unequally distributed

 

But spiritually speaking

We all have an opportunity

To look for

To search for

And maybe even find God

Living within us

 

Life is beautiful

Or at least can be beautiful

And I wonder

If any of us

Really take the time to notice

 

There are three things

That we all can do

 

We must love

We must love God

And we must love one another

 

And we must laugh

Laugh at our own foibles

And insecurities

They say a gloomy Christian

Is a non-believing Christian

 

And we must listen to

And be there

For one another

 

We shall pass this way

But once

And we must do

ALL the good we can

Show all the kindness

We can

 

Because

We shall pass this way

SEEING WITH=THE SIGHT OF FAITH!

(Can you SEE IT)?

 

PHYSICAL BLINDNESS=MUST BE AWFUL==I can ONLY IMAGINE=But

Spiritual BLINDNESS=is pretty bad too!=Today We have the HEALING=of a BLIND

MAN=Physically=But we see the SPIRITUAL BLINDNESS=of the  Religious leaders too=

CAN you not see it?=SEE IT=With the EYES OF FAITH!=”One thing =I do KNOW=is that

I was blind=and NOW I SEE”                                                                                                                      John 9:25

 

Today we have=A FAMOUS GOSPEL=From John=That is FULL of drama=Full of Irony=and

Full of EMOTION=Can you=NOT SEE IT?=Jesus HEALS a good-hearted  and simple BLIND MAN=

But the religious leaders become UPSET=Because it was=ON THE SABBATH DAY=and they TRY and

BROWBEAT=the parents of=THE BLIND MAN=and the man himself=”Some of the Pharisees said=’

‘This man is=NOT FROM GOD=for he does NOT keep the Sabbath’”                                        John 9:16

“But others asked’=’HOW can a sinner=PERFORM such signs?’=so they were divided’”   John 9:16

 

So the authorities=QUESTION the parents=But they want NO PART of this controversy=and they tell

Them=to talk  to THEIR SON==NO ONE can SEE clearly here=EXCEPT the blind man=and Jesus=of

Course=SEEING WITH THE EYES OF FAITH!=Can you see it?=Can I see it?=It is ANOTHER  MIRACLE=From our JESUS!

 

“Have FAITH in God’=Jesus answered=’Truly I tell you=If anyone says=to this mountain=’Go

 Throw yourself=In to the sea’=and does NOT DOUBT in their heart=but BELIEVES that=What they

Say will happen==It will be done for them’”                                                                                          John 11:22-23

“I tell you=He will see=That they get justice quickly=However when=THE SON OF MAN COMES=

Will he FIND FAITH=On the earth?”                                                                                                                   Luke 18:8

“On arriving there=They gathered the Church together=and reported ALL=that God had done=

Through them=and HOW he opened=A DOOR OF FAITH=to the Gentiles”                                  Acts 14:27

 

IN today’s story/Gospel=The ONLY man=with type of FAITH=Is the actual bind man=and Jesus

Himself=SEEING WITH=THE EYES OF FAITH!=Can you see it?=The BLIND MAN=Knows that and=

He can SEE=that it is A MIRACLE=and KNOWS Jesus is not a sinner=He says=

“The man=IS A PROPHET”                                                                                                                                     John 9:17

“He replied’=’I have told you already=and you do NOT LISTEN=WHY do you want to hear it

Again?=Do you want to BECOME his DISCIPLES too?’”                                                                           John 9:27

 

HARDLY=Jesus’ persecutors=The Pharisees and religious leaders=Are BLINDED by their

Prejudices=Blinded by their jealousy=They are blinded=They have NO FAITH!=

“For we LIVE BY FAITH=Not by sight”                                                                                                2 Corinthians 5:7

“NOW FAITH is confidence=In what we HOPE for=and ASSURANCE about what we

DO NOT SEE”                                                                                                                                                       Hebrews 11:1

 

We must ADMIRE this BLIND MAN=and other people=who Received MIRACLES from Jesus=

And spoke up FOR Jesus=For it is OUR JOB=It is THE RESPONSIBILITY=Of all us Christians=To

Bring OTHERS to the FAITH!=by testifying to the TRUTH=Of the God of LOVE=and HIS SON!

 

In the NAMES=Of our MIRACLE WORKING=Wondrous Jesus=and his Father=Who is forever

LIVING=forever loving=and FOREVER MIRACLE WORKING TOO!

THE NEED FOR GOD

 

 

Contrary to the public opinion

In today’s world

There is a NEED FOR GOD

In our lives

In fact more today

Than ever before

 

More in our lives globally

More in our lives nationally

And more in our lives

Both in our families

And in our lives individually

 

Take a look around

Are you seeing

The same world that I am seeing

 

We have war in our streets

We have murder

We have rape

We have incest

And we have child abuse

 

Our families are NOT safe

Our children are NOT safe

And it is NOT safe to be on the streets

Of any major city in this country

 

And we have

MORE of a need for God

In our lives than ever before

 

“Do not be like them ( the pagans )

For your Father

Knows what you need

Before you ask him”                                                                           Matthew 6:8

 

We have war among governments

We are having complete financial breakdowns

In many European countries

And yet the prevailing opinion is

For less God

In today’s world

 

The last time that I checked

It was not God

Who was responsible

For many of these things

It was us-but of course-WE KNOW BETTER

 

MORE GOD-not less

 

“Share with God’s people

Who are in need

Practice hospitality”                                                                             Romans 12:13

 

MORE GOD-not less

 

Love God with your whole heart

Love your neighbor as yourself

Forgive 70x7

 

It doesn’t sound to me

Like God’s teachings

Lead to murder in the streets,

Rape, incest, or child abuse

 

It’s the me first-you last-or you never attitude

That exists in our world today

Selfishness

That is what gets us into trouble

 

Families breaking down-losing friendships

Over health, money, sex, and death

 

“He who despises his neighbor sins

But BLESSED is he

Who is kind to the needy”                                                                 Proverbs 20:21

 

MORE GOD-not less

 

Leave the NAME OF GOD on money

Leave PUBLIC PRAYER in schools

 

Let us all

PRAY to the ONE true God

Whose name is LOVE

 

“So when you give to the needy

Do NOT announce it with trumpets

As the hypocrites do

In the synagogues

And on the streets

To be honored by man

 

I tell you the truth

They have received their reward in full”                                                   Matthew 6:2

 

More we-LESS I
MORE GOD-less me

 

We pray WITH GREAT NEED

To God

To my/our LORD and SAVIOR Jesus Christ

To help us

To HELP THIS WORLD

IN OUR TIME OF NEED

 

“The Lord

Will guide you always

He will satisfy your needs

In a sun-scorched land

And will strengthen your frame

 

You will be

Like a well-watered garden

Like a spring
