Ps        APOSTLE is the term given to the followers of Christ

            Who founded the early church; particularly the 12 disciples and Paul

 

This poem is for myself and ALL the Lord’s true followers in today’s world

 

I prayed my entire life, that if I lived 2000 years ago

I would not have run away when all the other Apostles did

I will NEVER know the answer to that-but I am still HERE today

TRYING to live a life BASED on God’s love and Christ’s teachings

 

NEW HOPE=NEW BLESSINGS=NEW LIFE

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

NEW HOPE---NEW BLESSINGS---NEW LIFE

 

 

As we

Close the doors

On another year

It is time

To take an inventory

Of who we are---both individually---and collectively

 

SPIRITUALLY SPEAKING---I mean

 

Materially---as long as

We have a roof over our head

And something to eat

How much does it really matter

 

This life

Is just our “temporary” home

 

“He put a new song

In my mouth

A hymn of praise to God”                                                           Psalm 40:3

 

My Father

Used to say it another way

“Live with a song in your heart

And a smile on your face”

 

My wish for you---for me too---in 2014    (2026)

Is that we will ALL

 

Live with GOD’S SONG

In our heart

And with a smile on our face

 

This comes from knowing

That we are ALL

CHILDREN OF GOD

 

And knowing

That he LOVES us

The way a parent

Loves his very own child

 

The way a parent

Loves and FORGIVES his very own child

 

Listen to what the Lord says,

“I will give you a new heart

And put a new and right spirit within you”                                               Ezekiel 36:26

 

And so

As we move forward in to 2014   (2026)

My wish for you is that

 

Whatever is in your PAST

Whatever is

 

                           NOT of God

                           NOT of love

                           NOT life---fulfilling

 

That you and I

Have the courage

To leave it there---IN THE PAST

 

“Therefore

If anyone is in Christ

He is a NEW CREATION

The old has gone

The new has come”                                                                           2 Corinthians 5:17

 

My wish for you is that you        ( and I )

 

“Be made new

In the attitude of our mind

And we put on the new self

Created to be like God

In true righteousness and holiness”                                                    Ephesians 4:23 & 24

SAINT FRANCES CABRINI

 

 

She was the youngest

Of thirteen children

Born of an Italian farmer

 

She was

Brought up in a strict household

But about the age 0f 20

Both her parents died

 

Two years later

She tried to become a nun

But was refused

For health reasons

 

She applied a second time

In another order

But was again refused

 

Now a schoolteacher

Who had taken a private vow of virginity

She was called

By a parish priest

To reorganize an orphanage

 

This orphanage

Was so badly mismanaged

By its foundress

That it wound up closing

 

Yet

The bishop encouraged Frances

To be a missionary

 

Papal approval

Was now obtained for her

“Missionary Sisters of the Sacred Heart”

 

Though her first idea

Was to go to China

She was now encouraged

To devote herself

To Italian immigrants

In the United States

 

She became a citizen

Of the United States

And later-a canonized Saint

 

The archbishop of New York

Invited her to found schools and orphanages

 

It is estimated that in 1889-when she arrived

There were 50,000 Italians

Only 1,200 of whom were church going

And most lived

In conditions of extreme poverty

 

The orphanage there had fallen through

And she had plenty of pupils

But no school building

 

The archbishop

Encouraged her to go back to Italy

But she got the orphanage going

And moved to West Park on the Hudson river

 

There she founded her novitiate

The most important house

Of her congregation

In the USA

 

Foundations followed in New Orleans

Nicaragua and Columbus hospital

Later foundations included Chicago

Buenos Aires and Kent

 

In 1917

Her congregations numbered 1,500 nuns

In eight countries

 

There were thirty-seven houses

Devoted to education, nursing

And the care of orphans

 

So much

For her earlier rejection

 

In character-she was strict

But just and loving

 

She died December 22^nd, 1917

And was canonized

By Pope Pius XII in 1946

 

Her body rests in Mother Cabrini high school

In New York

And her feast day is December 22^nd

The Miracle Continues-HOPE AND GRATITUDE

 

 

In my 22^nd miracle

I told the story

Of how God saved my life

When I was given zero per cent chance to live

And I told the story

Of the promise I made to God,

“To live for my family, my friends,

And ALL people everywhere,”

If God continued to sustain me with life

 

I consider my promise to God

My personal promise-my personal covenant

With God

I can honestly tell you

That not a day has gone by

Without me thinking of that promise

At least once

 

I can tell you

God has answered my promise with affirmation

Because here I sit some 48 plus years later

And while my life

Has not been the greatest

Of lives by human standards

Or even the life I would have chosen for myself

I have done my very best

To keep up my end of the promise

 

Because of the extended blessing of life

That God has given to me

I got to spend many happy occasions

With my family-both immediate and extended

I got to sit with my mother-holding my father’s hand as he died

Earlier this year-I got to take care of my mom

And sit with my sister-holding her hand as she died

I still have the pleasure of talking to each of my sisters

Every day

My sister, Mary, has four beautiful daughters

And I have received the gift of spending much time

With them and seeing them grow

 

For my part-I have tried to extend my witnessing of God

To as many people as possible

I have been baptized four times-in various churches-and four

Different denominations-ALL CHRISTIAN- over the years

I have shared my story both verbally-and through my poetry

To as many people as possible

 

I have ALWAYS wanted my own family and children

But it never did really happen for me

But OVER THE YEARS=I have met many WOMEN

TO SHARE the WORD of God with =and for me

THERE IS NOTHING BETTER THAN THAT

And there is nothing I like more than talking about God

And so I AM GRATEFUL=for all these women FRIENDS that I have=

GOD KNOWS US=Better than we know ourselves

 

And so some 48 plus years later-I am still alive

And I believe that there is a universal message

That I am meant to share through my life

 

HOPE

 

It used to be

That we had to die for our Christianity

Today-we must LIVE for it

The ultimate message of our life is one of hope

If we unite our lives with Jesus

And share our successes and sufferings

 

Our responsibilities as Christians

Is to live lives based on mercy-justice-forgiveness

Self-sacrifice and self-denial

The Christian message is one of HOPE- not just for one of us

But for ALL of us

 

GRATITUDE

 

One of my favorite passages in the Bible is the story

Where Jesus heals ten lepers

But only one comes back to say thank you

Jesus says,

“Were not all ten cleansed?  Where are the other nine?

Was no one found to return and give praise to God

Except this foreigner?”        Luke 17:17

 

And I say, “Thank you Lord”

I thank you for the Divine insight to make my promise

To you all those years ago

I thank you for the graciousness in your answer to my promise

I thank you FOR THIS GIFT OF LIFE

I thank you for the gift of time with my father, and my mother,

My sisters, my nieces, my entire family-both immediate and extended

My friends, and my churches

 

And finally-Dear Lord

We ask you to help us, HELP ME, to always come back

And say thank you

And help us, help me

To let you shine so thoroughly through us and in us

That people no longer see us

BUT ONLY YOU

HE KNOWS=THE LONGINGS OF OUR HEART

God KNOWS the longings

Of our heart

He knows that our DEEPEST WANT

Is to FIND HIM

And spend eternity

With him God-and his Son Jesus

LIVING in our heart

He KNOWS that we know

We are NOW his children

“Beloved-we are GOD'S CHILDREN now

What we shall be

Has not yet been REVEALED”                                                                         1 John 3:2

We live in a world of  UNCERTAINTY

Financial-social-physical-

And even scientific

The ONE thing that we can COUNT ON

The one thing

The ONE thing 

That we can be SURE of-

IS OUR GOD

We can count on him-

FOR we are his children

He LOVES US-like his very own

LIKE CHILDREN of God

“BLESSED are the peacemakers

For they will be called

CHILDREN of God”                                                                                          Matthew 5:9

“Yet to all-who did RECEIVE him

To those who BELIEVED

In his name

He gave the right

To become-CHILDREN of God

-Children born

Not of natural descent

Nor of human decision

Or a husband's will

But BORN OF GOD”                                                                                     John 1:12-13

YES-our God KNOWS

The LONGINGS of our heart

He knows-we want

To be his children

He KNOWS we want him

To LIVE in our heart

Yes-our BELOVED-our loving God

Knows the longings

Of our hearts

Scripture offers us

MANY promises and intimations

Of his CLOSENESS

Yes God LIVES

In our hearts-

We LONG for him-for

We ARE his children

“The Lord is CLOSE

To the brokenhearted

And SAVES those

Who are crushed in spirit”                                                                                   Psalm 34:18

“He tends his flock

Like a shepherd

He gathers the lambs

In his arms

And CARRIES them

CLOSE to his heart

He gently leads those

That have young”                                                                                                  Isaiah 40:11

MOST of us aren't aware

Of how dearly=GOD LOVES US

Of the close bond

Between him and I

We NEED constant reminders

And assurances-of just how much

God LOVES US

Just like the people of John's time

Who needed those SAME assurances

And reminders

GOD'S LOVE

Has been, “BESTOWED ON US”                                                                        1 John 3:1

Let us NOT forget this

And let us not forget-that-

We are his CHILDREN

And HE KNOWS

JOHN-THE APOSTLE WHOM JESUS LOVED

 

 

John was a son of Zebedee

Who together with his brother James

Belonged to the small group of apostles

Who followed Christ

 

These apostles were special witnesses

To many of Jesus’ miracles

Including the raising of Jairus’ daughter

The Transfiguration

And the agony in the garden

 

The Lord called John

Together with his brother James

The “sons of thunder”

 

Their temper was revealed

In some incidences

Such as when they wished

That the Lord call down fire

On the Samaritan woman

Who rejected Christ

 

And their willingness

To drink of the cup of suffering

As Christ did

 

John’s brother James

Is believed

To be the first apostle

To die for Christ

 

And by John

Living out his days

Testifying for Christ

In a Roman prison

 

John is believed

To be the author

Of the 4^th Gospel

And 3 Epistles

But less certain

Is whether or not

He did write

The final book of the Bible-Revelations

Because the writing style is so different

Than his earlier style

 

Nevertheless

He is credited

With this writing

 

John wrote about them

In a contemplative way

Emphasizing the Theological reality

Of Christ’s life

Above all

He stressed the Divinity of Christ

Who is both LIGHT and LIFE

 

John is believed to be

The apostle whom Jesus loved

And probably the youngest

Of all the apostles

 

“When Jesus saw his mother there

(at the foot of the cross)

And the disciple whom Jesus loved

(John)

Standing nearby

He said to his mother,

“Dear woman, here is your son”

And to the disciple

“Here is your mother”

From that time on

The disciple took her into his home”                                                            John 19:25-27

 

One of John’s symbols

Is the book

And many ancient churches

As well as some modern ones

Are named after him

 

John always emphasized

That because of Christ

We should. “love one another”

And in his writings,

“It is the  word of the Lord

And if you keep it-you do enough”

STEPHEN—THE FIRST CHRISTIAN MARTYR

 

 

Do you know

Who the first

Christian martyr was

 

His name was Stephen

 

In those days

Some of the Jewish women

Were being overlooked

In the distribution of the food

 

The apostles gathered

And chose seven men

To oversee the food distribution

 

One of those men

Was Stephen

 

Stephen was a man

Full of God’s grace and spirit

And performed many miraculous signs

 

Some opposition

Arose to Stephen

But since

They couldn’t fairly battle Stephen

Because of his wisdom and spirit

They persuaded some men to lie

And say—Stephen was blaspheming

About God and Moses

 

Stephen then testified

To the whole Sanhedrin

About the Lord’s covenant through people

Like Abraham and Moses

 

Stephen said to the Sanhedrin,

 

“You always resist the Holy Spirit”

And about Christ,

 

“Was there ever a prophet

Your fathers did not persecute

They even killed those

Who predicted the coming

Of the Righteous One

 

And now you have

Betrayed and murdered him

-You have received the law

That was put into effect through angels

But have NOT obeyed it”                                        Acts 7:52 & 53

 

The religious community

Became furious at him

And gnashed their teeth at him

 

But Stephen remained full of the Holy Spirit

And said,

 

“Look I see heaven open

And the Son of Man

Standing at the right hand of God”                               Acts 7:56

 

At this

They began yelling at him-rushed him

And began stoning him

 

Stephen prayed,

 

“Lord Jesus-receive my spirit

Lord-do NOT hold this sin

Against them”                                                              Acts 7:59-60

 

At this-he died

 

Dear Lord-we pray

That when people lie about us

And betray us

During the ordinary course of our lives

 

That we have

The FAITH of Saint Stephen

And clutch even tighter to you

And have the courage

To live that faith

Just as your humble servant-Saint Stephen

Before I left Pittsburgh

You couldn’t say

The word “CHRISTMAS” on tv

 

“Happy Sparkle Season”

Hardly has the same effect---at least for me

 

HOW QUICKLY WE FORGET

 

A miniature crèche

Identical to the one in Rome

Had to be moved

From the government courthouse

To outside a corporation

 

HOW QUICKLY WE FORGET

 

Haven’t you heard

JESUS is the reason

For the season

 

WITHOUT JESUS

You would be getting

Not one single gift this year

 

Putting up my decorations

And my Christmas tree

Trying to remember---trying NOT to forget

Jesus is the reason

For this kindness and goodwill

He is THE REASON

For this season

 

Trying to remember

The LOVE, the FORGIVENESS, and KINDNESS

That he brought to us---in this world

Trying to remember---his name---the name of JESUS CHRIST

Trying to let him know

That it ALL

Wasn’t for not

That it ALL---wasn’t in vain

 

Let us put the letter “C”

Back into Christmas

Let us put the name Christ

It is NOT so hard to remember

It really isn’t---all we have to do

Is take one long look up at the CROSS

YOUR CHRISTMAS SEASON

 

 

It’s another Christmas season

And I wonder what’s in people’s hearts

I see people rushing everywhere

They’re moving in such a hurry

I wonder if they remember what Christmas is all about

Perhaps-it could even be tearing them apart

 

But this poem is not to admonish anyone

It’s merely to help me regain my perspective

To see my responsibilities-and also enjoy the fun

I’m so thankful

There’s so much fun in just being alive

On Christmas day I’m not trying to accomplish anything

I’m not trying to strive

I’m not living in the world’s competition

I’m just relaxing and enjoying myself

I’m surrounding myself with family and friends

And if I receive their presence

My Christmas will beyond description

 

Sometimes I wonder if we haven’t lost the meaning of Christmas

Are we only concerned with our number of presents

Or if the present we got coast as much as what we spent

Maybe-we’re comparing our decorations to that of our neighbor

Is our Christmas wreath as pretty as the one next door

What you do and believe is what’s at the core

Of the Christmas season

 

In my Christmas-I want a blend

Of loving and sharing with my family and friends

And for the ones who are far away

The greetings we receive and the greeting we send

A nice glass of red wine

And a home-cooked meal

The opportunity to sit down and dine

And relax once more

 

What do you want in your Christmas season

Whatever it is

I hope it is in the true spirit of Christmas

And I hope it comes your way

John the Baptist

Was a great man=MANY

THOUGHT=he was the ONE

 

But when John

Heard about Jesus=he sent

THIS WORD to him

 

“Are you=THE ONE

Who is to come

Or should we=LOOK

For another?”                                                                                                                     Luke 7:19

 

John was in prison

At the time=and he

Was looking=for SOMETHING

BIGGER AND BETTER

 

Jesus was the ONE

He was that

SOMETHING BIGGER AND BETTER!

For us all

He was=he is=OUR HOPE

He is indeed=OUR MESSIAH!

 

“Though he slay me

Yet I will=HOPE IN HIM

 

I will surely

Defend his ways=to his face”                                                                                                   Job 13:15

 

“Yes my soul

Find rest in God=

MY HOPE=comes from him”                                                                                          Psalm 62:5

 

“FOR IN THIS HOPE=

We were saved

 

But HOPE that is seen

Is NO HOPE at all=WHO HOPES

For what they already have?”                                                                                        Romans 8:24

 

Jesus is our HOPE=

He is our hope

For something BIGGER

AND SOMETHING BETTER

In this world

And in the next

 

John and the others

WERE EXPECTING

A ministry=of judgment

And restoration

 

But Jesus brought

SOMETHING BIGGER AND BETTER

His mission was HEALING

And salvation

For us all=His mission

Was one OF HOPE for us

 

“Be joyful IN HOPE

Patient in affliction

Faithful in prayer”                                                                                                     Romans 12:12

 

“Command those

Who are rich=in this present world

 

Not to be arrogant

NOR TO PUT THEIR HOPE

In wealth=which is so uncertain

 

But to=PUT THEIR HOPE

In God=who richly provides us

With everything=for our enjoyment”                                                                           1 Timothy 6:17

 

So this ADVENT=this

CHRISTMAS SEASON

Reach out for Jesus

 

He is

SOMETHING BIGGER AND BETTER

Than anything=this world

Has to offer

Jesus=BRINGING SOMETHING BIGGER

AND BETTER=this Christmas Season

In Jesus’ name=and in the name=of OUR FOREVER HEALING Holy Father God!

GOD’S PRESENCE=IN TURBULENT TIMES!

 

We LIVE in TURBULENT TIMES=Dear  Sisters and BROTHERS=But the Psalms=

Teach us=GOD’S PRESENCE=Is always with us=ONE of my favorite PSALMS=Is

Psalm 23=It EMPHASIZES that fact=”Beside RESTFUL WATERS=he leads me=

He REFRESHES MY SOUL”                                                                                                                   Psalm 23=2B-3A

 

During these=Rough and TURBULENT TIMES=It pays to have SPIRITUAL MEMORIES=Some

Memories=to CARRY US through=So pick out=A FEW SCRIPTURAL MEMORIES=They carry

US=Through the tough times=”And BEGINNING with Moses=and all the Prophets=He

Explained to them=What was said=In all THE SCRIPTURES=concerning himself”      Luke 24:27

“ALL SCRIPTURE=is God-Breathed=and is USEFUL=for teaching=rebuking=Correcting=and

Training in righteousness=So that the SERVANT of God=May be thoroughly equipped=For

EVERY good work”                                                                                                                                Timothy 3:16-17

 

The Psalms=particularly 23=Have been  started=and very ENCOURAGING to me=Particularly

During these tough times=THESES TURBULENT TIMES=reminding me=That GOD’S PRESENCE=

Is always there=Particularly=when we NEED IT MOST=GOD’S ASSURANCE=and Presence=

Is ALWAYS there for us=Even in TURBULENT TIMES=

“”Even though=I WALK=Through the DARKEST VALLEY=I will fear NO EVIL=For you are

WITH ME=Your rod and your staff=THEY COMFORT ME”                                                           Psalm 23:4

“YOU PREPARE=a table before me=In the presence=Of my ENEMIES=You anoint my head=

With oil=MY CUP OVERFLOWS”                                                                                                      Psalm 23:5

“BLESSED are those=Who have learned to ACCLAIM YOU=Who walk in the Light=  of

YOUR PRESENCE=Lord=”                                                                                                                           Psalm 89:15

 

I AM SURE=Each and every one of us=Have been through some HARROWING MEMORIES=all

Through our life=BUT GOD’S PRESENCE is=With us=In these and  IN TURBULENT TIMES=Having

ASSURED us =through our suffering=GOD’S PRESENCE=God’s LOVE=God’s Scripture=Transfers

Us=Into FAITH=Into love=and into LIVING IN=the Holy Father God=and his SON=Jesus Christ

Dear Lord=We Pray for A LIVING FAITH=through our lives=IN YOUR PRESENCE!

“Where can I go=From your Spirit?=Where can I flee=from your PRESENCE?”     Psalm 139:7

“For Christ=did not enter=a sanctuary=Made with human hands=That was ONLY a copy of=

The true one=He entered HEAVEN ITSELF=Now to appear for us=

IN GOD’S PRESENCE”                                                                                                               Hebrews  9:24

“To him=Who is able=To keep you from stumbling=To PRESENT you before=His  glorious

PRESENCE=Without fault and great joy=--------To the only God=Our Savior be glory=majesty=

Power=and authority=Through Jesus Christ our Lord=Before all ages=Now and forevermore=

Amen”                                                                                                                                                           Jude :24

 

Dear Lord Jesus Christ=We thank you=FOR YOUR PRESENCE=In our lives=Your Psalms=

And YOUR SCRIPTURES=and HOW you TANSFORM  our lives=BY YOUR WORD=Through our

FAITH=”SURELY your GOODNESS and LOVE=will FOLLOW ME=all the days of my life=and I

Will dwell=IN the House of the Lord FOREVER”                                                                          Psalm 23:6

 

In Jesus’ name=and IN the name=Of our FOREVER LIVING=FOREVER LOVING=Holy

Father God=WHO IS FOREVER PRESENT!
