How would you

Define the word gift

I would define it

As something given to you

Of value

Usually by one person

To another

Unfortunately for us

We human beings

Usually define gifts

As something we can touch

Or feel

Fortunately for us

GOD KNOWS

That the lessons that we learn

In life

Are of MUCH greater value

Than anything

That can be measured materially

Or of material value

“But the gift of God is ETERNAL LIFE

In Christ Jesus our Lord”                                                                       Romans 6:23

That is

IF we are believers

And if

We do our best

To live by the GOLEN RULE

And the TWO GREATEST COMMANDMENTS

One of my favorite movies

Is a 2007 movie

Called, “The Ultimate Gift”

It is the story

Of a love-hate relationship

Between a wealthy grandfather

And his grandson-the black sheep of the family

When the wealthy grandfather dies

All the rest of the family

Show up to claim their inheritance

That they are sure is theirs

They get nothing

The black sheep-the grandson- a young man-

Named Jason Stevens

Gets nothing too

But he does get a crash course

In life-via video tape-from his belated grandfather

This crash course

That his grandfather has devised

Leads him to finding out

That giving and happiness

Is what is important in life

Not money

God and Christ

Has left us an inheritance too

But like the spoiled young grandson

We too

Must learn

That what is important is LOVE

In order to inherit it

“But the meek

Will in inherit the earth

And enjoy great peace”                                                                 Psalm 37:11

“Having believed

You were marked in him

With a seal

The promised Holy Spirit

Who is a deposit

Guaranteeing our inheritance

Until the redemption

Of those who are God’s possession

To the praise of his glory”                                                            Ephesians 1:14

Dear Lord-we pray

That we learn

Like young Jason Stevens-in the movie

THE ULTIMATE GIFT in life

Is what really matters:

IT is LOVE-not sex

It is GIVING-not receiving or selfishness

It is FORGIVING-not vengeance

AND IT IS GOD AND FAMILY-not money

And Dear Lord, we pray

That we DO learn our lessons in life

And that we DO

Put them into practice

And may our inheritance be

A LIFE LIVING FOREVER WITH YOU

Ps        My grandfather-Patrick J. Murphy was born in the late 1800’s

            On this day-he died in 1961 from colon cancer---I was six and at the time

            Of his death-he was my best friend-it was my first encounter

            With death-I still miss him

PRAYER FOR FAMILIES

Almighty God and Father,

Help all families to live

As the Holy Family

Jesus, Mary and Joseph,

United in respect and love,

Teach us through them

The sanctity of human love,

The value of family life,

And the way to live at peace

With all-That we may share

Of child abuse

Are made every year

In the United States

Jesus loved the little children

Children are a reward from the Lord                                 Psalm 127:3

In 2007,

Approximately 5.8 million children

Were involved

In an estimated 3.2 million

Child abuse reports and allegations

Jesus loved the little children

Almost 5 children die every day

From child abuse More than 3 out of 4

Are under the age of 4

My heart aches

My heart breaks

I don’t think anything in the whole world

Disturbs me as much

As a child being sexually exploited

90% of child abuse victims

Knew the perpetrator

In some way

68% of those abused

Are abused by family members

“People were bringing the little children to Jesus

To have him touch them

But the disciples rebuked them

Jesus saw this, became indignant, and said

“Let the children come to me

And do not hinder them

For the Kingdom of God

Belongs to such as these

I tell you the truth

Anyone who will not receive

The Kingdom of God

Like a little child

Will not enter into it”

And he took

The children in his arms

Put his hands on them

And blessed them”                                                 Luke 18:13 thru 17

Jesus loved the children

Let us

Hold a thought and a prayer

For ALL the abused children

And let us ALL

Work to make this a better world

So that we can truly say

“LET THEM COME”

SAINT LUCY---VISION

Lucy was a virgin

A martyr

And today she is considered to be

The patroness of the blind

She died in the year of 304

During the persecution of Diocletian

She was

A wealthy Sicilian

Who refused marriage offers

Gave her goods 

To the poor

And was accused

By one of her suitors

To the authorities

The judge ordered her

To be sent to a brothel

And become violated

But she became miraculously immovable

He tried to have her burnt

Also unsuccessful

Finally---she was killed

By a sword

Legend has it

That her eyes too---were torn out

Only to be miraculously restored

Dear Lord---I pray---we pray

That in a world

That has become blinded

By your vision for it

Blinded by greed

Blinded by sexual lust

And just blinded

By our own pure selfishness

We pray

That we have the faith

Of Saint Lucy

And we pray for your vision

Your vision for our world

And your vision---for each of us individually

And all of us collectively

To be returned to us---TO YOU

Chasing rainbows

In the sky

Looking for loving
