THE USELESSNESS=Of the wood=and the grapevine
THE WOOD=Of the VINE
God USES the vine=as EXAMPLES=of Scripture many times
FOR ISRAEL=and later=FOR THE MESSIAH
Many times=IN The OLD TESTAMENT=Including Ezekiel
Ie. Ezekiel 17:5-10 and 19:10-14

EXILES=asked about GOD’S CONSISTENCY
(Not relating=THE CHOSEN PEOPLE=to the vine)
HOW is the WOOD=ON THE VINE=Better than any other wood?
Ezekiel was to COMPARE VINE’S WOOD=with the wood in the
forest
NO FRUIT=the vine wood itself
-Like wood=without FRUIT=ISRAEL IS=GOOD FOR NOTHING
-The wood of the grapevine=IS USELESS
Ie. Wood from
forest=Can make tools=tables=even pegs

THE BURNING=of the wood=of the grapevine
=Can ONLY be thrown into fire=for fuel
-FIRE=burns=both of it=NO LONGER and use
ESPECIALLY NO VALUE=after partial burning

Jerusalem=is LIKE=the vine of the GRAPEVINE
THE PEOPLE of Jerusalem=are like the useless wood=OF THE
GRAPEVINE
God=SET HIS FACE=against Israel’s people
-The PEOPLE of Jerusalem=had NO USE=they were WORTHLESS
Like the Vine
-God was SETTING his face against them=He was USING
THE REAL PROPHETS=to OPPOSE=the people of Israel=With his
PRESENCE
-Thet the people=would get ONE CALAMITY=after another=
Then they will know=THAT I AM LORD
-THE PROPHET EZEKIEL=would REVEAL GOD=to Israel
THROUGH THIS GREAT JUDGMENT
LINE 8
THE REASON=for the CONTINUING DESOLATION Of Jerusalem
-The land would BECOME DESOLATE=Because of PERSISTENT
UNFAITHFULNESS
Says God
The SINS of Israel=BROUGHT GOD’S JUDGMENT
But their IDOLATRY=and wickedness=was CONTINUING

THE HARLOT WIFE OF YAHWEH
Lines 1-5
Israel was BLESSED AND PROMISED=had HUMBLE BEGINNINGS
-The WORD of the Lord=through EZEKIEL=CONDEMN JERUSALEM=because
of
HER WICKEDNESS
Ie.
Jerusalem=Israel=people as a whole
Jerusalem’s BIRTH AND NATIVITY=are from the LAND of the
Canaanites=
Ie. Ammorites
and Hittites
“ON THE DAY YOU=WERE BORN ISRAEL”=
You were humble and POOR
ISRAEL WOULD have perished=IF NOT=for God’s covenant
LINES 6-7
GOD’S FAVOR=TRANSFORMED Jerusalem
-God saw ISRAEL STRUGGLING=Israel would have PERISHED=
WITHOUT GOD’S INTERVENTION
-The Lord=CHOSE ISRAEL=because of their OATH=of their
FOREFATHERS
Ie.=GOD TOOK NOTICE OF THEM
God said=”LIVE TO ISRAEL”=when others were dying=and
He made them THRIVE
Under GOD’S CARE=Israel became=
LARGER=stronger=more beautiful and MATURE
Israel thought=They NO LONGER NEEDED GOD=but
They were NOT SELF-SUFFICIENT
Line 8=GOD’S loving covenant with Israel
“You BECAME MINE”
-They needed God and HIS PROTECTION
They were bare and NAKED without GOD
-God swore=and OATH TO ISRAEL=and ENTERED A COVENANT with
them
Ie. A COVENANT
OF MARRIAGE
“YOU BECAME MINE”
Lines 9-14
GOD’S CARE and LOVE=Upon Jerusalem
-God CLEANSED and ANOINTED ISRAEL=with water and fragrant
oil
He CLOTHED THEM=ADORNED them with Jewelry=and gave them a
CROWN
For their head
-You ate fine food=FINE FLOUR=Honey and oil=
God PROVIDED RICH LY=for Israel=for every need
-Because of GOD’S LOVING CARE=Israel was BEAUTIFUL AND
SUCCESFUL
To everyone
-Israel was=THE FAVORITE=among nations
Because of GOD’S SPLENDOR=not anything they did
LINES 15-19
ISRAEL THE PROUD HARLOT=Jerusalem acted like a harlot
-Israel=TRUSTED IN ITS OWN BEAUTY
Ie. GOD WARNED
Israel=NOT to forget him=but it did no good
ISRAEL FORGOT ABOUT GOD=They thought they did it
ON THEIR OWN
ISRAEL an example of states=and
ROYALY=among other nations =
But this led them to FAME=and to
seek=THE IDOLS=OF OTHER NATIONS
-They ran after IDOLS=of pagan
nations=LIKE
A HARLOT=runs after customers
ISRAEL took the BLESSINGS FROM GOD=and
used them=TO ADORN
PLACES and pagan idols
Ie=they used GOD AND SILVER=for
sexually charged idol worship
LINES 20-22
JERUSALEM SACRIFICED their sons
and daughters to IDOLS
-They actually PARTICIPATED=In the
cult of child sacrifice
ISRAEL REFUSED=to REMEMBER their HUMBLE
BEGINNINGS
-They prostituted themselves=and
FORGOT GOD’S PROTECTION and BLESSINGS
LINE 23-26=
Jerusalem’s GREAT WICKEDNESS
-GOD said to Israel=WOE=WOE TO YOU
-GOD PROTESTED to Israel=with
GREAT JUDGMENT TO FOLLOW
-ISRAEL KEPT BUILDING ITSELF UP
ISRAEL KEPT MULTIPLYING ITS
IDOLATRY
LINES 27-29
THE DEPTH OF THE SIN=OF ISRAEL THE
HARLOT
They WORSHIPED THE FOREIGN
GODS=with IDOLATRY
LINE 30
IT WAS A PROBLEM=with their OWN
HEARTS
LINES 31-34
They were not like a HARLOT=In
that they did=NOT TAKE PAYMENT
They PERSISTED=they were worse
than a harlot
They were like an ADULTEROUS WIFE
ISRAEL CONTINUED=to turn away from
God
