EZEKIEL 17=

THE PARABLES of=THE TWO EAGLES=and the VINE

 

LINES 1-2

-A RIDDLE and=a parable

PART RIDDLE=and part PARABLE

 

Riddle= a PUZZLE to UNDERSTANDING

 

PARABLE=In that it is told

In SPIRITUAL and material truth

 

A PARABLE to Judah=and the HOUSE OF ISRAEL

 

-This PARABLE=Describes the events=BETWEEN the time of

King Jehoaichin’s exile=597 BC

 

Ant the year of Zedekiah=and Babylon=and the PROMISE of Egypt’s HELP

 

LINES 3-6

THE FIRST EAGLE=of the parable

CONCERNS a large and majestic EAGLE=That came=and took

THE HIGHEST BRANCH=from a cedar tree

 

The eagle CARRIED it to=The land of trade

The eagle=Then took some=OF THE SEED=From of the cedar tree

 

AND PLANTED IT IN==A fertile field=WHERE IT

BECAME a SPREADING VINE=spreading forth branches

 

LINES 7-8

THE SECOND EAGLE=Of the parable

 

There was a SECOND EAGLE=That appeared suddenly

 

THE VINE PREVIOUSLY MENTIONED=spread its roots=and its branches

TOWARDS the second eagle

 

THE VINE DID THIS=so that the SECOND EAGLE=Might take CARE of it=

WATER IT=etc.

 

LINES 9-10

GOD’S OBSERVATION=UPON THE VINE

 

WILL IT THRIVE?=God asks the question

REVEALING the FATE=of the vine

 

WILL IT NOT WITHER=When the EAST WIND=BLOWS THROUGH IT?

 

THE SECOND EAGLE=would NOT be able to protect it=

FROM the coming storm=

Ie.      THE VINE WOULD PERISH

 

LINES 11-15

THE MEANING and application of this parable

 

EZEKIEL EXPLAINS=the meaning of this riddle and parable

SO THE PEOPLE=could not claim=THEY DID NOT UNDERSTAND

 

THE VINE=Turned to the second EAGLE=in great HOPE=of life and vitality

(Ezekiel 17:8)

 

THE VINE=would NOT get help=from this SECOND HELP=and

ZEDEKIAH=would get NO HELP from Egypt

Zedekiah was BREAKING a COVENANT

 

He IGNORED =the loyalty and submission

He made to Nebuchadnezzar=The KING OF BABYLON

 

GOD EXPECTS Zedekiah=to be LOYAL=TO THE COVENANT=with Nebuchadnezzar

And he WOULD BE PUNISHED=For breaking this COVENANT

 

LINES 16-18

GOD’S ESTIMATION of Zedekiah

 

He will die=In Babylon=and indeed he did=but NOT BEFORE

They Killed Zedekiah’s sons=Right before his own eyes

 

He broke a COVENANT OF LOYALTY=and Egypt could be of

NO HELP against Babylon=since Zedekiah broke his COVENANT

He could NOT ESCAPE

 

ZEDEKIAH=did not keep and HONOR=his covenant with Nebuchadnezzar  

 

LINES 19-21

GOD SPREAD HIS NET=Over Zedekiah=and other high ranking

Government officials

 

They could not ESCAPE=from the BABYLONIANS

 

-WHEN Zedekiah=BREAKS his word=to the BABYLONIANS

HE COMMITS TREASON against himself

 

-Zedekiah=and the Judeans=should have SURRENDERED themselves

To the Babylonians=and THE JUDGMENT=God BROUGHT upon them

 

ALL of the troops would DIE BY SWORD=or be scattered

 

-A COMPLETE FAILURE OF ZEDEKIAH’S reign=

They would be CONQUERED COMPLETELY

 

LINES 22-24

THE HOPE OF PROMISE OF RESTORATION

 

GOD was NOT FINISHED=with Israel=and her KINGS

 

GOD WOUL TAKE A TWIG=from a BRANCH=A TENDER ONE=and

REPLANT IT=in a prominent position

(It would be THE MESSIAH=from the LINE OF DAVID)

Ie.      Isaiah 11.1=Ezekiel’s version of the PROPHECY

 

FROM THE ROOT OF JESSIE=From the dead=God promised

God promised wonderful and PRODUCTIVE GROWTH

Ie.     PLANT IT on a mountain of Israel

 

-GOD would bring DOWN the high trees=and plant a LOW TREE

Ie.      THE MESSIAH

 

God would EXALT HIMSELF=among the nations=all would know=

GOD IS LORD
