WHO JUST WAS=THIS SAINT PAUL=OF THE CROSS?

 

As MANY of you KNOW=I was AWAY last weekend=With 60 OTHER

Good Christian-Catholic MEN=At Saint Paul’s MONASTERY=On the SOUTH SIDE

Of Pittsburgh=It was ONE of the=MOST SPIRITUALLY FULFILLING WEEKENDS=Of my life!

 

There were Masses=Holy Communions=and a confession=and there were NUMEROUS=

Prayer study groups=Which DID VALIDATE=Much of what I believe=and WRITE ABOUT=But it

GOT ME=to thinking=Who just was=THIS SAINT PAUL OF THE CROSS?=and this is

WHAT I came up with

 

SAINT PAUL OF THE CROSS (1694=to 1775)

Saint Paul of the CROSS=was a PRIEST=as well as the FOUNDER OF=THE PASSIONIST CONGREGATION=He was BORN in Genoa=and was the ELDEST SON=of an impoverished

Businessman=With NOBLE ancestry=He was brought up DEVOUTLY=from an early age=

And he TURNED DOWN=a rich inheritance=and a PROSPEROUS MARRIAGE  OPPORTUNITY=

He volunteered to FIGHT the Turks in 1714=AFTERWARDS He spent several YEARS=IN PRAYER=Until 1720=When he had a VISION=for a NEW CONGREGATION=

 

Which was tested=and eventually APPROVED=When HE=and his younger Brother John=and a FEW

OTHER COMPANIONS=Started a congregation in 1727=After Paul was ordained a priest=His

BELIEFS were austere=and He combined PENANCE=with an INTENSE DEVOTION to Jesus

Christ=Which he BELIEVED should be COMMUNICATED to others=Through mission

Work=In the parishes=Paul believed in COMBINING the ACTIVE LIFE  with the  CONTEMPLATIVE

LIFE

 

Saint Paul’s  MINISTRY=to the sick=and the dying=and for sinners=WAS so outstanding=That

His presence=Was requested THROUGHOUT ITALY=MANY of the young people left=Because

His teachings were so austere=but the WORK CONTINUED=with the FOUNDING of 3 houses

In 1747=and PAPAL approbation was  coming

 

Paul was a GIFTED PREACHER=especially on the subject=Of the PASSION of Jesus Christ=but he

Also had gifts of prophecy=and of HEALING=and was ABLE to read people’s HEARTS=Saint

Paul was very interested=IN THE Reconciliation=with the Church of England=with the Holy See!=

And FINAL PAPAL APPROVAL=for his congregation=was given in  1769=Where Paul RESIDED=

At the Churches of Saints John and Paul IN ROME

 

Paul wrote his ORDER in 5 days=at the age of 26=After 40 days of RETREAT AND PENANCE=and

THE PASSIONISTS CONTINUE today=as my weekend last week=ATTESTS TOO=Saint  Paul died

At the age of 80=and his FEAST DAY is=October 19^th
