ABOMINATIONS AT THE TEMPLE
Line 1
Ezekiel The Prophet=The Lord has his HAND on him
6th Year=6th Month=Fifth day=THE HAND
of the Lord=Is upon him
Ezekiel=had a SERIES OF VISIONS=actually happened
One and a1/2 years
later
Ezekiel had his own HOUSE=the ELDERS respected him
Ezekiel FELT=the hand of God
Lines 2-4
Ezekiel is TRANSPORTED to Jerusalem=IN A VISION
Ezekiel=and a fire=are REPRESENTATIVE of God himself=
In human likeness
EZEKIEL saw 4 abominations=AT THE TEMPLE
IDOLATROUS IMAGES=at the TEMPLE=In the INNER COURT=PROBABLY
The RIGHT SIDE=of the TEMPLE
AN INSULT to God=to the TEMPLE=and to the PEOPLE THEMSELVES
Hezekiah had REMOVED the IDOLATRY=but his Son=Manasseh
brought
It all back
Ezekiel=FELT the wrath=of God=for Israel there
Line 5=Ezekiel looks to the NORTH
(The NORTH is the RIGHT SIDE=of the TEMPLE)
Again=He saw the IMAGE OF JEAOUSY=NORTH SIDE
Line 6=GREAT and even greater ABOMINATIONS
Ezekiel=Told to dig a HOLE in the wall
GOD told Ezekiel=the image of JEALOUSY represents
The GREAT ABOMINATIONS of Israel
Because of these ABOMINATIONS=God was LEAVING
His Sanctuary
God told Ezekiel to dig into the wall=and make a Hole
And when he did=He saw EVEN GREATER INSULTS=and abominations
Lines 9-12
WHAT EZEKIEL SAW=BEHIND THE WALL
Wicked things and BLIND MEN
ANCIENT CULTS=like from Egypt=HIGHEST AND MOST EXTENSIVE
Ie.
=Oxen=asses=dogs=cats=etc.
SEVENTY MEN=Elders were there=LEADING THE WORSHIP
It was NOT only what they did=but what was in the DARK
It is what was =HIDDEN IN THEIR HEARTS=and that HORRIFIED
Yahweh
Even further
And these ELDERS=took this idolatry=INTO THEIR PRIVATE HOMES
This IDOLATRY=really ANGERED GOD
EXTERNALLY=they were OBSERVING the rites of the TEMPLE
INTERNALLY EVIL THINGS=and desires and abominations of THE
HEART
They thought=GOD DID NOT SEE THEM
The Elders THOUGHT=God had forsaken Israel=so they
EXCUSED themselves=for this private WORSHIP
But the TRUTH was=THE ELDERS and Israel=had FORSAKEN GOD
LINES 13-14
Women were weeping=for Tammuz
EVEN GREATER ABOMINATIONS to see
Tammuz=a deity=WORSHIPPED by neighboring nations
DEEPLY IMMORAL
Ezekiel was DISMAYED=because women were there too
This came originally=from the Canaanites=and then on to the
GREEKS
Ie=Identified with the GREEK Adonis
Lines 15-16
PRIESTS worshipping in the sun
25 Men=Facing EAST=Worshipping the sun
And God PROMISES Ezekiel=he would SEE=EVEN GREATER
ABOMINATIONS
In the INNER COURT=The elders did NOT WORSHIP Yahweh=even
there
IN HIS OWN TEMPLE=But the sun
They were worshipping the SUN=with the men’s backs=to the TO
THE TEMPLE
LINES 17-18
A PROMISE from God for JUDGMENT to Israel=for these
abominations
The LEADERS of Judah=Thought this was all TRIVIAL=but it
Was NOT TRIVIAL to Yahweh
It was NOT ONLY=the spiritual and RELIGIOUS SIN
But also the social chat and INJUSTICE
Ie. It was a STENCH for God
And for the ISRAELITES=all this idol WORSHIP
It was NOT a trivial
thing=as the people would find out
GOD’S JUDGMENT was and is ASSURED
God’s eyes and ears=WOULD NOT SPARE THEM
God is HEARING and seeing=HIS HEART=will NOT overrule his
head=
