REBUKING ELDERS AND PROPHETS
LINES 1-3
THE INQUIRY=and the IDOLS
Of the IDOLS OF ISRAEL
SOME of the ELDERS of Israel=Came to Ezekiel BEFORE
(PREVIOUS Ezekiel=8:1)
Those were the ELDERS Of the ISRAEL Community
In Exile
-These men=have set UP IDOLS=IN THEIR HEARTS
-Ezekiel had SUPERNATURAL INSIGHT=Into the HEARTS
Of these ELDERS
-THESE men =were WORSHIPPING idols=Not outwardly
But INWARDLY=Causing them to stumble
SECRET SINS=God had NO obligation=To answer
These men=Because of their SIN
LINES 4-5
God’s PROMISE=to idol loving INQUIRED
GOD’S ANSWER=to hidden idolatry=and SIN would come
IN the form of JUDGMENT
GOD WAS=Seizing them=BY THEIR HEART
(Their hearts=WERE FAR from God=and God INTENDED)
To grab hold=of THEIR HEARTS again
-They were ESTRANGED FROM GOD=by their idols
The Israelites=GAVE their hearts=To the IDOLS of
The Canaanites=and their surrounding NATIONS
LINES 6-8
A CALL to repentance=and a PROMISE
OF JUDGMENT
God says=TURN AWAY from idols=and all your ABOMINATIONS
And repent
The PEOPLE were immersed in idolatry=Yet they
STILL INQUIRED from Ezekiel=ABOUT GOD’S WILL
God would OPPOSE=These double-hearted men
PRETENDING to serve God
A SIGN AND A PROVERB
-GOD Hates double heartedness
-PRETENDING to serve God=But FILLED WITH IDOLATRY
LINES 9-11
GOD’S PROMISED PUNISHMENT=Of the PROPHETS
-Ezekiel SPOKE OUT=against the FALSE PROPHETS
-Against the false prophets=and IDOLS
God would SEND JUDGMENT=ON the false and wicked prophets
-The people LONGED FOR DECEPTION
THE PUNISHMENT of the false prophets=Would be THE SAME
As of the IDOLATERS
This is THE ULTIMATE REASON=for the GREAT JUDGMENT
On Israel
-They would be CONVICTED=of the sins =and in the end=
They would NO LONGER STRAY
They would have=A RESTORED RELATIONSHIP=with God
Line 12-14
Noah=Daniel=and Job
NO HOPE=for Judah=During the famine
People with REAL ESTATE=were sinning against God
-The people and their LAND=Would become an EXAMPLE=OF GOD’S
JUDGMENT
For their PERSISTENT UNFAITHFULNESS
The judgment of the land=and its PEOPLE
Would be=AGRICULTURAL FAILURE=Famine against it
EVEN THE 3 RIGHTEOUS MEN (if present)=Noah =Daniel=and Job
Could NOT STOP God’s judgment=Against the land
They could ONLY DELIVER THEMSELVES=Not
The nation as a WHOLE
THE CHOICE=of these 3 men WAS FASCINATING
They were PROVEN FAITHFUL and resolved=and RESCUED=
For their TRUST IN GOD
LINES 15-16
NO HOPE for Judah=During desolation
Ie. Famine and wild
beasts
THESE would DRIVE OUT=the people=from their land
-Even Noah’s=DANIEL’s=and JOB’S PRESENCE
Would not save ISRAEL
From Judgment=and the wild beasts
LINES 17-18
NO HOPE=for Judah=During war
Ie. Famine=wild beasts=and the SWORD to
come too
INVADING ARMIES are coming
(Lines 14-16)
EVEN with the presence of these 3 men=
THE JUDGMENT=of the SWORD=Was coming
LINES 19-20
NO HOPE=for Judah=DURING a PLAGUE
THE 4 JUDGMENTS against Judah
Ie. FAMINE=wild
beasts=war=and NOW=THE PLAGUE
Even Noah=Daniel=and Job=IF PRESENT
Could not SAVE ISRAEL=From plague and PESTILENCE
Lines 21-23
THE LESSON FROM A REMNANT
God would SEND=these 4 SEVERE JUDGMENTS
ON Jerusalem and Judah
-They would BRING DEATH=to man and beast
Yet=God would leave a REMNANT
NOT BECAUSE of righteousness=a negative meaning=a LESSON
Ezekiel was=SPEAKING at this time
MANY MORE EXILES to come=From Jerusalem and Judah=to Babylon
WHEN the remnant ARRIVED=the Jews would already be IN BABYLON
And they WOULD KNOW=that the JUDGMENT=Ezekiel spoke of
WAS WELL DESERVED=and
That they eventually would BE COMFORTED
THE OTHER COUNTRIES=would come to UNDERSTAND
That the JEWS and Babylonians=WERE LIVING EXAMPLES of God’s
JUDGMENT
JUDGMENT by God=Was definite=IN THE END=and Israel would
KNOW
Of God’s COMFORT and righteousness
People would UNDERSTAND=GOD WAS RIGHTEOUS=In all his WAYS
EVEN IN SEVERE JUDGMENT
