“I GIVE THANKS to my God for every REMEMBERANCE of you-I always PRAY WITH JOY because-of your partnership in the gospel from the first day until now-BEING CONFIDENT of this-that he who BEGAN a GOOD WORK in you-will carry it on UNTIL completion in the day of Christ Jesus” Philippians 1:3-6


DO YOU REJOICE in your church or your churches as Paul did of the Philippians-WE SHOULD REJOICE in our brothers and sisters in Christ-after all we are ALL on a journey though life-and we are TAKING IT together


PERHAPS-we should take some TIME to be GRATEFUL for ALL of our brothers and sisters in Christ-
YES even the most difficult ones-for they TEACH us the most-IF we can continue to LOVE them-and we should also give thanks to our SPIRITUAL TEACHERS-and GOD and Christ-for leaving us TRUE WORDS to LIVE BY


it is A GREAT DAY to be ALIVE in GOD'S LOVE for us-and a great day to GIVE THANKS for all of our brothers and sisters in Christ








GIVING THANKS IN ALL CIRCUMSTANCES




AS I sit here
REFLECTING on my life
PREPARING to fly to Maryland
To spend THANKSGIVING
With my 2 sisters, 4 nieces
And other family members
SOME memories flash through my mind
To times gone by


Lying there
Packed in an ice bed
For two weeks---with a temperature of 108


I thank God for life


Bleeding internally
My blood count going down to three


I thank God for life


The Good Father
Asking me if I wanted to say
An act of contrition
Or say something
In my own words


Saying: “I don't think God
Wants me to die
But if he does
He must have a reason
And to please bless
My father, my mother, my 2 sisters,
My family and friends,
Because it would be harder on them
Than it would be on me
I would be gone


But if God
Wanted me to live
I would live
For me family, my friends,
And for ALL PEOPLE everywhere”


And waking up a week or two later alive


I THANK GOD FOR LIFE

ALL the support
I received from my parents
Never questioning---ALWAYS LOVING


I thank God for family


Two sisters---four nieces
Always giving me emotional and financial support
Always being there for me


I thank God for family


An extended family
Beyond compare


I thank God for family


Old friends
That are still there for me today


I thank God for friends


NEW friends
That I have made
From Palm Beach Gardens and beyond


I thank God for friends


People that I have met
From all over the world


I thank God for you


Priests-clergy men and women
That I have met


I thank God for GOD
I thank God for you


By human standards
My life is a total failure
No health---no money-or material possessions
No family ( wife or children )


But along the way
I FOUND GOD
I FOUND YOU


“I have learned
The secret of being content
In any and ever situation
Whether well fed or hungry
Whether living in plenty
Or in want” Philippians 4:12


“BE joyful always; PRAY continually:
GIVE THANKS in all circumstances
For this is GOD'S WILL for you
In Christ Jesus” 1 Thessalonians 4:18


TODAY-and everyday-

WHEN we PRAY-we are ARMING ourselves against evil-EACH DAY-we ask God to PROTECT us and HELP US to RESIST our temptations-bur we MUST always remember to be DELIBERATE and INTENTIONAL about prayer


It is a GREAT DAY yo be ALIVE in GOD'S LOVE for us and a great day to CHOOSE GOD over EVIL














EVIL IS REAL


ONE THING that I am sure of
Is that
There is REAL evil
In this world


Bad can be many things
But evil is SOMETHING more
Some kind of motive
BEYOND bad
There is something sinister
About it


And while we
May break through some bad things
And bad people
By doing good
By being good


I think it takes
Something TRULY DIVINE
Something heavenly inspired
To break through evil


Evil is SATAN
Evil is sin
And it has been around
Since the beginning
Of time


SINCE Adam and Eve


“And the Lord God said,
'The man has now become
Like one of us
Knowing good and evil


He must
NOT be allowed
To reach out his hand
And take also
From the tree of life
And eat and live forever'


So the Lord BANISHED him
From the Garden of Eden
To work the ground
From which he had taken” Genesis 3:21-22


Thus evil
Became present
In the world


And CONTINUED
To be present
In ALL of humanity
UNTIL one man-CONQUERED evil
Of every kind


Conquered the cruel events
Bringing his life
To its final destination


Conquered the cross
And CONQUERED DEATH


Setting up a DIVINE STANDARD
That we can
ALL aspire to
Yet never reach


And if we
LOVE the Lord
We will turn from evil
And do good


“Let those who love the Lord
HATE evil


For he guards the lives
Of his faithful ones” Psalm 97:10


“TURN from evil and do good
SEEK PEACE and pursue it” Psalm 34:14


For we KNOW
IF we are truly
Pursuing God
In our lives
UNITING our crosses with God and Christ
We can do-NO EVIL


“WHEN tempted
No one should say
'God is tempting me'


For God cannot be tempted
By evil
Nor does he tempt anyone” James 1:13


And evil is STILL PRESENT
In today's world
Maybe more so than ever


But we know
God will DELIVER us
From evil
If we are
LIVING IN FAITH


“EVEN though I walk

I will fear NO EVIL

For evil
Has no power over us


As it had

We are ALL slaves to something in this world-sex-money-science-an ADDICTION like drugs-alcohol-or pornography-I CHOOSE to be a SLAVE to God and to Christ-after all they are the reason for MY VERY BEING


I BELIEVE Paul's message above is to take the MOST UNAPPRECIATED thing that we do and do it with the SINCERITY OF HEART as though we are doing it for just Christ-in TRUTH-IF we are living our life for God-that is WHO we are doing it for

It is EASIER to FOLLOW Jesus and God if we SURROUND OURSELVES with other BELIEVERS who are also TRYING to do so-IT HELPS to be a part of COMMUNITY of believers-The earliest Christians knew this too-THEY needed to BAND TOGETHER-as we also do-because the world can be a cruel hostile place


WE NEED to encourage one another and grow in holiness together-this HELP US to PREPARE our hearts-minds-and souls to be BUILT INTO a dwelling place for GOD AND THE SPIRIT


it is a great day to BE ALIVE in GOD'S LOVE for us and a great day to BEGIN to prepare ourselves to be a DWELLING PLACE for God


Dear Lord-we PRAY-that you be PRESENT in our COMMUNITY OF FAITH
























WHERE DO YOU WANT TO LIVE




The greatest psalmist-David-
Put it this way


“SURELY goodness and mercy
Shall follow me
All the days

That sounds great
And I want to too
LIVE in the house

I am sure

But somehow-I KNOW
It's not that easy


David had to repent

Just as you and I
NEED forgiveness

We have committed in this world


Recently
I took a trip
Back to my former home
Pittsburgh, Pa.


And moved on too
Mount Pleasant, Pa
And then on to Virginia
And Maryland


I was received well
EVERYWHERE that I went

WHERE we live

“BE KIND to one another-COMPASSIONATE-forgiving one another as God has FORGIVEN you in Christ” Ephesians 4:32




This sounds SIMPLE-but the QUESTION is-can we STILL be COMPASSIONATE to others on those days when we are feeling ill or WHEN it is inconvenient for us-CAN we FORGIVE another when every fiber of our being IS screaming for us to get revenge or when we are ANGRY-That is HARD


Can we be kind-compassionate-and FORGIVING to all others-not just those that it BENEFITS us to do so-as CHRISTIANS-our CALLING is to do so


CAN we value others-can we VALUE PEOPLE more than materialism and possessions and our very selves-that is the SECOND COMMANDMENT


it is A GREAT DAY to be ALIVE in GOD'S LOVE for us and a great day to be KIND-COMPASSIONATE-and FORGIVING TO OTHERS

COMPASSION




One of the single greatest gifts
That we can possess
Is the gift of Compassion


Compassion is simply the gift
Of having empathy for
Or showing kindness
To another human being


The reason so few of us have it is
It is simply so much easier
To judge another person
And the place that they are in
In their lives


It is much more difficult
To walk in another man or woman’s shoes
Or to go the extra mile
With another human being


But that is-WHO GOD IS
That is-WHO CHRIST WAS
And who Christ is-still today


“The Lord, the Lord
The COMPASSIONATE and gracious God
Slow to anger
Abounding in love and faithfulness
Maintaining love to thousands
And forgiving wickedness, rejection and sin” Exodus 34:6-7


“Jesus called his disciples and said,
“I have COMPASSION for these people
They have already been with me for three days
And have nothing to eat
If I send them home hungry
They will collapse on the way
Because some of them
Have come a long distance” Mark 8:2-3


How easy it is to judge
When we walk by the homeless
Or a beggar on the street
To think:


“I would never do that”
Or
“That could never be me”


What if we gave that person
A $ or two
Shook their hand
And said:
“Have a nice day”


COMPASSION


The time a person
Needs our help
Is exactly the time
When that person feels LEAST LOVABLE


Well it is easy to judge
NOT so easy
To FEEL for another human being
To walk a mile in their shoes


“Let us NOT become weary
Of doing good


For at the proper time
We will reap a harvest
If we do not give up


Therefore as we have opportunity
Let us DO GOOD to all people
Especially to those
Who belong
To the family of believers” Galatians 6:9-10


COMPASSION---not judgment


Because God’s love for us
Christ’s love for us
IS UNCONDITIONAL
And this is his mercy
This is his compassion for us

“YOU shall LOVE the Lord-your God-with ALL your heart-with ALL your soul-and with all your mind-This is the GREATEST and FIRST commandment” Matthew 22:27-38


I THINK this might be the hardest thing to do out of ALL of GOD'S LAWS-it is NOT EASY to ALWAYS keep God first and fore most in our mind-yet that is WHAT we are called on to do-The ONLY WAY that we can do this is IF WE are living IN THE SPIRIT-for the HOLY SPIRIT makes all things possible


The Holy Spirit NEVER QUITS on any of us and HELPS to make the impossible-POSSIBLE-it is a GREAT DAY to be ALIVE in GOD'S LOVE for us and a GREAT DAY to LOVE GOD more deeply and KEEP him first in our hearts-minds-and souls




















THE FIRST COMMANDMENT




I think
OUT OF all the commandments
The one that is MOST DIFFICULT
To keep
IS the first one:


“LOVE the Lord your God with ALL your heart and
With all your soul and with all your mind-
THIS is the FIRST and GREATEST commandment” Matthew 22:38


In other words-YOU shall NOT put anything or anyone
ABOVE GOD
NOT quite so easy


BECAUSE it is SO EASY
To get caught up in your life
And put other things ABOVE God
Without even realizing
We are doing it


We get caught up
In our career
Our hobbies
OUR favorite sports
Admire and idolize certain people


We KNOCK God
Out of first place
Without even knowing it


But when everything
And everyone else
Desert us
The PERSON
That we run back to
IS GOD


And he is always waiting
For us-WITH OPEN ARMS
BECAUSE he loves us UNCONDITIONALLY


AGREAT EXAMPLE to remember
In the bible
Is that when Daniel and his friends
Are told to
Bow down before the king


They respond:
“We will NOT SERVE
Your god or worship
The golden statue........” Deuteronomy 3:18


WHEN they remained steadfast
He ordered them thrown
Into the fiery furnace


To the king's dismay
The flames did not
Harm them
Because they were
WALKING WITH GOD


So the king
Set them free


So when temptation
Comes to us
In this life
And it will


Ask yourself
WHICH God
you will serve


KEEP GOD first
In your life


And you will
Walk away unscathed
Just like Daniel
And his friends


And while you
Will still die physically
Someday


You will NEVER experience
THE SECOND DEATH
The death of the soul


YOU will live again


KEEP GOD FIRST

There will NEVER be another person EXACTLY like you-when GOD made you-he BROKE the mold-God gave you special talents and gifts-and he asks you to USE those gifts for the BENEFIT of others-THAT is how important that you are-NO ONE ELSE in this ENTIRE world can do the work that you can do


OUR talents are GOD'S GIFTS and he guides us in the way we are to use them-LORD-we thank you for our gifts and we ask that we might be able to use them for the GOOD of others


IT IS a great day to be ALIVE in GOD'S LOVE for us and a great day to TRY and move forward into being other CHRIST'S in today's world and a great day to PASS ON OUR LOVE on to others

“This is my dear Son
With whom I am well pleased” Mark 3:13-17


You—one of John’s disciples
Take this all in
From that moment on
You know that your life
Will never be the same


John himself said,
“I must decrease---and he must increase”
From that moment on
John’s disciples followed Jesus


So must it be with us
If we are truly to become other Christ’s
In this world


We must die to ourselves---our selfish sinful selves
And as Jesus himself said,
“If anyone would come after me
He must deny himself
And take up his cross
And follow me” Mark 8:31


We live in a Godless society
Becoming a little more so each day


A poet once wrote:
“He has
No hands but your hands
He has no feet
But your feet
He has no mouth
But your mouth…….”


If God’s word
Is to truly come alive again
In today’s world
It is up to us


Saint Paul once said,
“I have been crucified with Christ
And I no longer live
But Christ lives in me


The life I live in the body
I live by faith in the Son of God
Who loved me
And gave himself for me” Galatians 2:20


Each one of us
Has been handcrafted by God
Our own unique selves
To live a life---and do a job
That no one else can do
Only us


And part of that job
Is to make God come alive again
In today’s world


Finally---dear Lord
We pray
That you shine in us and through us


And we become so much like you
That when the world looks at us
It sees no longer us

Dear Lord-we PRAY that we are HUMBLE enough, and ACCEPTING ENOUGH to ANSWER the call for our life that you put before us-for IF we live out our life and our calling in a worthy manner-we WILL ALWAYS BE walking with you Dear Lord

And Jesus himself said,

Did not come to be served

And to give his life

There it is
SUDDENLY—BEING GREAT
Doesn’t sound too appealing


At least to me
How about you


Being great involves choices
Choices that CHANGE our lives
And the lives of our family
Our friends, and even strangers


And sometimes these choices
In serving
Are uncomfortable-unpleasant-
And even inconvenient and annoying


Dear Lord-we pray
That we-as you did
Make choices that benefit others
Even if sometimes-it works against
Our OWN selfish interests


Dear Lord-HELP US-like you
To be willing to pay the price

Saint James-Jesus' ½ brother
Once wrote,


“Consider it ALL JOY
My brothers
When you encounter various trials........” James 1:2


We probably hate to admit it
But TRIALS can be GOOD for us
Because they can bring MATURITY
DEVELOP character
And IF we take on our crosses
As Jesus did
They can bring us GREAT JOY


It all goes to our mind set
TRIALS can make us or break us
It all depends
On the ATTITUDE we face them with


We should become
An EXAMPLE to others
Like Jesus


You are probably saying,
“Bob/Robert are you nuts
How can trials and afflictions
Be good for us?”


“It was good for me
To be afflicted
So that I might learn
Your decrees” Psalm 119:71


First of all
They can remind us
Of our human limits


Sometimes
The MIRACLES of our life
DEPEND on God's power
NOT on our own


John 4
Tells us about the HEALING
Of an official's son


Jesus says,


“UNLESS you people see miraculous signs
And works
You will NEVER believe” John 4:48


“The royal official said,
'Sir, come down,
Before my child dies'” John 4:49


“Jesus replied,
'You may go
Your son will live'” John 4:50


The power of faith
The power of belief
COMES FIRST
Then comes THE HEALING


Put your TRUST in God


Secondly-afflictions can develop virtues
In us


VIRTUES like humility-patience-understanding
Wisdom-and compassion


And these virtues
Can lead to
Human and spiritual maturity


But if we
Let our afflictions break us
This can lead to qualities
Like meanness-pettiness-and selfishness


WHICH PERSON
Are you
Going to choose to be


So I ask you
What kind of trials
Are you experiencing
In your life-right now


And what kind of person
Are they turning you into


Dear Lord-we pray
That you USE our trials
In life
To HELP us become
MORE AND MORE like you


And BECOME
A shining example to ALL

“Peter said, 'Lord-is the PARABLE meant for us or for everyone'” Luke 12:41


Just a few lines later-Jesus warns the disciples-and ALL Christians to take special CARE for:
“MORE will be demanded of the person entrusted with more” (verse 48)


In other words-the MORE GOD GIVES US-the more RESPONSIBILITY we have in POINTING out the PROPER DIRECTION for other CHRISTIANS-this is especially true of our PARRISH and PASTORAL leaders of today-we are to NOT be like the Pharisees and the Sadducees-IF we are talking
or writing a GOOD game-we are to LIVE A LIFE to be an example for all


WHATEVER our talents and abilities are-they are to be USED to BUILD UP the BODY OF CHRIST


it is a GREAT DAY to be ALIVE in GOD'S LOVE for us and a great day to use our talents to HELP in BUILDING UP GOD'S KINGDOM

Is full of darkness
The darkness of materialism
The darkness of sexual lust

Is a miracle of science


It is a darkness
That is leaving
A trail of broken churches
Leaving a trail
Of broken families
And leaving a countless trail
Of broken people


We live in a world
That tells us
God no longer exists


I tell you
That that is not true
That turning back to God
That turning
Towards the one true light
Is our last and only hope


God gave us two great lights
The light of day---the sun
And the light of the night
The moon
So that we can still find our way
In the darkness


But I suggest to you
That we must first open our eyes
Or we will never find our way

Choose love, kindness, and forgiveness
NOT coldness, indifference, and ingratitude


Choose the light of goodness
Over the darkness of evil
Turn back to God


Jesus said,

It is EASY to acquire things in today's world-we LIVE in a time of RAMPANT consumerism and much wealth-and we can GO ONLINE any time that we want to


WE NEED to remember that GOD AND PEOPLE is what should come first in our life-not money and consumerism-NOT such an easy thing to do in today's world


But that is where REAL TREASURE is FOUND


it is A GREAT DAY to be ALIVE in GOD'S LOVE for us-and a great to find REAL TREASURE on this journey we call LIFE

A favorite move of mine
Was a movie called,
“CAN’T BUY ME LOVE”
With a young Patrick Dempsey


It was about
A nerdy high school boy
Paying the most popular girl
In school-to be his girlfriend
So he can become popular


She became
His paid for girlfriend
He becomes popular
And turns into a complete jerk


And she winds up
Despising him
And turns the whole school
Against him


MONEY CAN’T BUY ME LOVE


In life
If we are good-looking
We can buy fame
We can
Even buy sex


But we CAN’T BUY
True love


We can’t buy
True affection


And that
Is what is so great
About our God
We don’t have to


HE MADE US
He loves us
He KNOWS every strength
And every weakness
That we have


He knows
EVERY flaw
In your character
And yet
HE LOVES YOU ANYWAY


Money can’t
BUY ME LOVE
And it
Doesn’t have to


God loves you
FOR WHO YOU ARE


But what do you LOVE MORE
Is it God
Or is it money


“For where your treasure is
There your heart
Will also be” Matthew 6:21


“NO ONE can serve two masters
Either he will hate the one
And love the other
Or he will be devoted
To the one
And despise the other
YOU CANNOT SERVE
BOTH GOD AND MONEY” Matthew 6:24


Where does your treasure lie?
Which master do you serve?


Don’t get me wrong
Having money
Is NOT a sin


We all need money
To live


But the love of money
Putting money above people
Above God-Above family-IS


“For the LOVE OF MONEY
Is a ROOT of all kinds of evil
Some people-eager for money
Have wandered from the faith
And pierced themselves with many griefs” 1 Timothy 6:10


“MONEY CAN’T BUY ME LOVE”


For the record
In the movie-“CAN’T BUY ME LOVE”
The young man
Figures out
What a fool he has been
And the MOST popular girl in school
Actually does FALL IN LOVE with him


Fame and fortune
Can never buy real love


But sincerity-honesty-loyalty-and goodness
Being genuine
Being real
Being kind-CAN


And these things
Are qualities of LOVE
And ALL these things
Are qualities of GOD


“No one has ever seen God
But if we can love one another
God LIVES in us
And his love
Is made COMPLETE in us” 1 John 4:12

“WE GIVE THANKS to God for all of you-REMEMBERING you in our PRAYERS-unceasingly calling to mind your WORK OF FAITH and labor of love and endurance in HOPE of our Lord Jesus Christ-BEFORE our God and Father-KNOWING-BROTHERS and sisters-LOVED BY GOD-how you were chosen” 1 Thessalonians 1:2-4


Paul wrote these WORDS to the Church of Thessalonia-but we have to know that they APPLY to us-just as much as today


WE ALL have different abilities and we are CALLED to use them in this journey we CALL LIFE-USE
your abilities to HELP those in need and be PRACTICAL about it-FOR example-I would love to volunteer or use financial wherewithal to HELP others-but because of my health difficulties-I am NOT
blessed in these areas


BUT I TRY to use my writing and the weapons OF LOVE AND PRAYER to help this world-whatever you have use it to try and HELP someone in NEED


DEAR LORD-we thank you for this BLESSING you call life and we ask you to HELP US help others in NEED
















RESPONDING TO SOMEONE IN NEED




As Christians
In the 21^st century


ONE of the things
We are called upon
To do
Is that when
We see a need
We are to FILL IT


BE FILLED with compassion


That is exactly
What our master
And teacher did
In the 7^th chapter
Of Saint Luke's gospel


ALL PRAYERS
Do NOT come with words


“WHEN the Lord
Saw her


He was moved
With pity for her
And said to her


'DO NOT WEEP'” Luke 7:13


Jesus saw a NEED
And filled it
Because he was filled
With compassion


Nain was
An insignificant town
A few miles south
Of Nazareth


But it became IMMORTALIZED
Because of the MIRACLE
That Jesus worked there


A widow's son died
And she is now vulnerable
Because she has
No family member
To look out for her


“The Lord
Is CLOSE to the brokenhearted
And SAVES those
Who are CRUSHED in spirit” Psalm 34:18


And that is what we too
HIS disciples and apostles
Of this modern day world
ARE called on-to do


BE CLOSE
To those in need
RESPOND
To those in need
COMFORT those in need


“May your UNFAILING LOVE
Be my comfort” Psalm 119:76


The story
Of the widow Nain
SHOWS that God
Shows that Jesus


PERCEIVES our DEEPEST longings
Knows our deepest pain


So whether it be
Someone who has lost
SOMEONE/or something
Dear to them


Someone sick
In the hospital
Or in pain


STEP UP
And perceive a need
RESPOND to someone
In need today


SOMETIMES-in prayer
WHEN we step forward
On our own


NO WORDS are necessary

A MAN CALLED LUKE

A MAN CALLED LUKE




He is
The only Gentle writer
Among the 72 books of the Bible


He was
A Greek physician by trade
A disciple of Saint Paul
And his books include
The Gospel of Saint Luke
And the Acts of the Apostles


The Gospel of Saint Luke was once called
“The loveliest book in the world”
Or/and “The most beautiful book ever written”


Luke’s Gospel is considered the Gospel of women
Because of Jesus’ passion to the women of Jerusalem
Because of its emphasis
On Mary---the birth of Jesus---
Her visit to her cousin Elizabeth
Mary’s prayer of glorification to the Lord
And her acceptance of God’s mission
From the angel without hesitation


“I am the Lord’s servant,”
Said Mary to the angel
“Let it be done to me according to your word”


Luke knew
That then, as now,
We don’t understand this notion
Of God’s unconditional love
For us
We just don’t understand
The heart of God


So Luke
Gives us an historical account of Jesus’ life
He teaches us
About Jesus’ humanity
He teaches us about Jesus’ public ministry
Through his perfect compassion and forgiveness
Through stories like
The Good Samaritan, The Lost ( “Prodigal ) Son
And the rich man and Lazarus


Jesus understands our weakness
So says Luke
Jesus understands our temptations and our trials
So says Luke
He came to save both Jew and Gentile
So says our Saint Luke


He came for both the outcasts and the accepted
He came
To save both the poor and the rich
He came for
Both men and women
He came for
The free and the oppressed
He came for
Each and every one of us


So says
A man called Luke
In “THE MOST BEAUTIFUL BOOK EVER WRITTEN”


Go ahead and read

“Go on your way; BEHOLD-I am sending you LIKE LAMBS among wolves” Luke 10:3


Jesus wasn't sending his disciples to the slaughter;he was just warning them that the world IS a dangerous place; and it is NO LESS TRUE today for us-his apostles and disciples of the 21^st century-in certain parts of the world-you can be killed for your FAITH-and in many parts-his BELIEVERS today -us-we are just TOTALLY IGNORED


God has a MISSION for each of us today-just as he had for his disciples of yester year-we are to TRAVEL LIGHT and stay focused on GOD and HIS WORDS and not on ourselves or make idols out of material things-SHARE THE GOOD NEWS


LAMBS are safest WHEN they stay close to the SHEPHERD-we would be WISE to do that


IT IS a great day to be ALIVE in GOD'S LOVE for us-and a GREAT DAY to TRAVEL LIGHT










TRAVELING LIGHT




We ALL have to travel
Like it or not
For ONE reason or another


Some for work or business reasons
Some for medical reasons
Some for vacation
And often times-just to see family or friends


And we all PACK differently
Some heavy
Some medium
Some light


Jesus instructed his disciples:
“Take nothing for the journey
Except a staff-
NO bread-no bag-no money
In your belts


Wear sandals
But not an extra tunic


Whenever you enter a house
Stay there
Until you leave that town
And if any place
Will not welcome you
Or listen to you


Shake the dust
Off your feet
When you leave
As a testimony against them” Mark 6:8-11


TRAVEL LIGHT


But I think
More so than that
What Jesus was REALLY TALKING ABOUT
Was our spiritual and emotional baggage


And let’s BE HONEST
We are ALL carrying baggage
Form our past
Some heavy
Some medium
Some light


The LESS we carry with us
The easier
To navigate our own spiritual journey
And the more
We are CAPABLE of helping others
Carry theirs


“CARRY each other’s burdens
And in this way
You will FULFILL the law of Christ”


We are WEIGHED down
With too much stuff
Too many hard memories
Too many fears


TRAVEL LIGHT


Well
Life is a journey
And the BEST
We can hope for
Is to shake off
The dust of those
Who have been UNKIND to us
And to TRUST GOD
That what we need
Will be provided
And to

By God’s command

We are all CHALLENGED in this world-challenged in every area of our lives


CHALLENGED in health and in science

CHALLENGED to RESTORE broken relationships


BUT most of all challenged-to find GOD in the deepest-darkest-part of our souls


THERE is only ONE reason to LIVE and that is to honor and love OUR GOD-and-love and honor our family-friends-and churches


ALL THINGS are held together by GOD and MY LORD and SAVIOR Jesus Christ


IT IS a GREAT DAY to be ALIVE in GOD'S LOVE for us-as we face the challenges of LIFE-and find the ANSWER to all questions IN OUR GOD

RECENTLY
There has been
A great effort
Going around
In the name of
THE ICE BUCKET CHALLENGE


It was GREAT
WHEN it started out
Then it turned into
A bit of a fad


What it was SPECIFICALLY
Was the “ALS ICE BUCKET CHALLENGE”
(Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis)


It was an activity
PERFORMED by an individual
By dumping a bucket of ice water
On ONE'S own head
To PROMOTE awareness
To the disease
And RAISE FUNDS for the disease


I couldn't think
Of a better cause
To raise funds for


BUT at times
It could be
A little bit risky


In today's world
THERE are some
33 or 34,000 Christian religions
Not to mention
The Jewish, the PEACEFUL Muslim religions-most are
And the far eastern religions


I SUGGEST
That we need to get
To the point
WHERE we have ONE GOD
For ALL of us


THE GOD OF LOVE
THE GOD OF PEACE
THE GOD OF LIFE
THE GOD OF TRUTH
And the GOD of
KINDNESS AND FORGIVENESS


“HEAR Oh Israel
The Lord Our God
IS ONE LORD” Deuteronomy 6:4


ONE GOD OF LOVE


Why not try it?
Could this world be any worse?


“And thou shalt

As children-our family often got a pine tree or Scotch pine tree for Christmas-To the ancient people-the
pine tree symbolized HOPE and resilience-and it had ability to ENDURE with GRACE-when everything else around was devoid of life-WE would always leave our Christmas tree up until after my January 19^th birthday


Today is the feast day of Saint Theresa of Avila-a 16^th century Saint who wrote: “LET NOTHING DISTURB YOU,” among her works-In her everyday living she was DEEPLY ROOTED in the WORD OF GOD-and a woman of DEEP PRAYER in love with the DIVINE-and her life gave WITNESS to a LIFE deeply rooted in God




IT is a GREAT DAY to be ALIVE in GOD'S LOVE for us and a great day to be deeply rooted in the WORD OF GOD

OUR LOVING GOD can be found everywhere-GOD sends us HIS MERCY every day-for he is KIND-
but it is up to us to be KIND to others-since he is kind


KIND to that person who is pesky-ignorant-or just plain RUDE-for we are to be KIND to everyone as God LOVES everyone-OUR true kinship with God is the LIVING FIRE-the FIRE-of his love-his HOLY SPIRIT


GOD'S MERCY changes everything for the BETTER


it is A GREAT DAY to be ALIVE in GOD'S LOVE for us-and a great day to be KIND AND MERCIFUL to others










THE KINDNESS OF GOD




Saint Vincent DePaul once said
The surest way to be a Saint
Is to be kind
To be kind

God’s kindness is deliberate
God’s kindness is never ending
God’s kindness is constant
And ever flowing


To be kind to the poor
To be kind to the oppressed
To continue to be kind
To that same rude person
Who treats you with arrogance and contempt
And takes you for granted---over and over again
Are definitely saintly qualities


God’s kindness is abundant
God’s kindness is continual
God’s kindness is unconditional


It is the kindness
Of an UNCONDITIONAL kind of love

God’s kindness is never ending
God’s kindness is constant
God’s kindness is ever flowing

The SUN'S RISING is RICH with
The PROMISE of another day


GOD ALWAYS keeps his promises


The promise of God
Is another day
To begin anew


And in that day
GOD shows us
HIS unfailing care
For each one of us


The psalmist
REMINDS us
That each day
Is ANOTHER opportunity
To TURN to God
With CONSTANT PRAISE
and a grateful heart


IT IS a great day to be ALIVE
IN God's never ending everlasting LOVE for us

“I can do ALL things in him who STRENGTHENS me” Philippians 4:13


SOMETIMES in my life-I have been in such dire situations that I don't know how I went on-HOW I made it through-it is ONLY though the GRACE of God that I am alive-and my FAITH in God-that I get up every day and KEEP ON TRYING


It is OBVIOUS to me that I am being CARRIED by God-I came to the very end of myself and what I had to give MANY many years ago-I am running on LOVE for God and LOVE for others-as PEOPLE OF FAITH-we know that great strength often comes in our weakest moments


I kind of feel like Saint Paul—“For through the law I died to the law so that I might-LIVE FOR GOD-I have been crucified with Christ and I no longer live-but CHRIST LIVES IN ME” Galatians 2:20


WHEN we feel weak-it's a sign to PRAY and BELIEVE STRNGTH is coming-WHEN we have God-we feel EMPOWERED so that we can FACE whatever lies before us






















STRENGTH




We have all
Heard the saying


“What doesn’t kill me
Makes me stronger”


The LORD is my strength


“The Lord is my strength
And my song
Has become my salvation


He is my God
And I will raise him
My father’s God
And I will exalt him” Exodus 15:2


Where does
Your weakness lie


My particular weakness
Is health
My weakness
Is also finances


It is also the fact
That I don’t have
A significant other
Or a family of my own


I have to tell you
That if I had seen
A movie of my life
And what it was to become


I would have run
Not walked
And leapt
Off the nearest bridge


THE LORD IS MY STRENGTH


Our God is a merciful God
In that
He lets our life
Unfold only
One day at a time


So I latched
On to God
I latched on to Christ
And have been
Riding their coattails ever since


I am TOTALLY dependent on God
And on others


“Come to me
All you are weary
And burdened
And I will
Give you rest


Take my yoke upon you
And learn from me
For I am gentle
And humble in heart


And you will find rest
For your souls


For my yoke is easy
And my burden is light” Matthew 11:28-30


Where does
Your weakness lie


Latch on to God
Latch on to Christ
And you will
Replace your weakness with strength


THE LORD GOD
IS MY STRENGTH


“But those
Who HOPE in the Lord
Will RENEW their strength


They will SOAR
On wings like eagles
They will run
And not grow weary
They will walk
And not be faint” Isaiah 40:31


Don’t be afraid
To show your weakness
For we are human
We weren’t meant
To never fail


It is
Only through RELYING ON GOD
That we can
Learn to fly


“For the foolishness
Of God
Is wiser than man’s wisdom
And the weakness of God
IS STRONGER
Than man’s strength” 1 Corinthians 1:24

THE LUCKIEST MAN

THE LUCKIEST MAN




Do you know
WHO Lou Gehrig was


Lou Gehrig-other than Roberto Clemente-
WAS probably my most favorite baseball player


He PLAYED for the NEW YORK YANKEES
From 1923-to 1939
And was twice named American League MVP
(most valuable player)


In 1969
He was VOTED the greatest first baseman
Of all time
By the BWA (baseball writer's of America)
And was the leading vote getter
On the major league ALL CENTURY TEAM
CHOSEN in 1999


HIS nickname was “THE IRON HORSE”


But Mr. Gehrig-like ALL of us will-
SUCUMBED to something-
SUCCUMBED to Lou Gehrig's Disease
Otherwise known as ALS
(Or Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis)


On June 21^st, 1939
The Yankees announced Mr. Gehrig's retirement
And July 4^th, 1939 was proclaimed
As “Lou Gehrig APPRECIATION DAY”


And on July 4^th, 1939
Mr. Gehrig began what has been called
“BASEBALL'S GETTYSBURG ADDRESS”-
Beginning his speech with


“YET today
I consider myself THE LUCKIEST MAN
ON THE FACE OF THE EARTH”


And that is what Mr. Gehrig was-
THE LUCKIEST MAN
LUCKY because he was LOVED
AND APPRECIATED


And that is
What we men and women
ARE today
LUCKY-because we are LOVED


AND BLESSED


That's what we ALL are
LUCKY and BLESSED
Because we all are
LOVED by God
And LOVED by others


I often feel
LIKE the LUCKIEST man alive


38 years of EXTRA LIFE
AFTER I was told
It would end


The greatest parents
And getting to spend
So much EXTRA TIME with them


Even being with them
AS they were passing
To the next life


A beautiful sister Terri
Who has constantly HELPED me
And calls me every single day


A beautiful sister in Mary
And four beautiful healthy nieces
ONE more beautiful than the next


And a wonderful extended family
With whom I have spent much time with
OVER the years


And BEAUTIFUL friends and churches
BOTH old and new


VERY LUCKY and VERY BLESSED
That's what Mr. Gehrig would say that I was


THAT'S WHAT I AM
That's what Mr. Gehrig was


THAT'S WHAT WE ALL ARE
The LUCKIEST men and women alive


For we are LOVED BY GOD
AND LOVED by ONE ANOTHER

This was in response to a woman who approached him and said that Jesus' mother was blessed


WAS Jesus denigrating his own mother-OF COURSE NOT-For Jesus knew as we KNOW that Mary was the first one who heard the WORD OF GOD and OBSERVED it-She said yes to the ANGEL and let the WORD of GOD be the GUIDE for her life


Mary heard the WORD of God-said “YES” and acted upon it-WE are ALL called upon to do the same


DEAR LORD-it is a GREAT DAY to be ALIVE in God's love for us-and a GREAT DAY to hear the WORD OF GOD-answer YES like Mary-and act upon it by PUTING GOD first and LOVING others as ourselves

“Hearing the Word of God”

In the 13^th Chapter

Of Saint Matthew’s Gospel

Jesus tells the story

Of the parable of the sower

He tells the story

Of a farmer

Sowing his seed

He tells us about

How the birds

Eat up some of the seed

And he tells us

How some of the seed

Fall on rocky ground

And doesn’t grow

And some fall in the thorns

And don’t grow

But some of the seed falls on good soil

And produces a great harvest

What about us

In today’s world

Is God harvesting

A crop in us

I dear say

We live in a godless society

People want the word “God” off of money

People want no prayer in school

No ten commandments plaque on public property

Maybe

We can’t change the world

But we can

Have a soft heart

We can have

A listening ear

We can give someone

A hug or a handshake

WE can be there

For our family, our friends

Maybe even someone

We don’t like so much

How about you

Is God’s love and word

Alive in you

Maybe if

Enough of us

Decide to put God’s word first

Decide to love and be kind to one another

Maybe we really can

Begin to change the world

Often-faith doesn't come easy-our modern day minds DEMAND scientific proof-SOMETIMES-we are tempted to put God in a box and only call him out when necessary-but OUR GOD is a mystery and doesn't work that way


OUR FAITH is a mystery because the only way that we can build faith is by FIRST stepping out in love-thereby building our faith-and by finding GOD'S LOVE in the face-heart-and hands of those around us


DEAR LORD-help me/help us to be a sign of faith and love for others in today's world


it is A GREAT DAY to be ALIVE in GOD'S LOVE for us and a great day to be A SIGN OF LOVE for others in today's world

I NEED A SIGN


2000 years ago
Jesus was healing the sick
Making the crippled walk
Helping the blind see
Letting the deaf hear
Performing miracle after miracle


And yet
It wasn’t enough


The people of his day
Wanted a sign


Jesus’ response,
“A wicked and adulterous generation
Asks for a miraculous sign
But none will be given to you
Except the sign of Jonah”


Jonah was a prophet
And had to spend 3 days and 3 nights
In he belly of a fish
To rescue he Ninevite people


What about us today
We want a sign
That God exists
We want scientific proof/evidence


What about the sign
That Jesus
Was crucified, died, and was buried
What about the sign
That 3 days later
Jesus overcame death


What about
That sign


What about the sign
Of your very own life
How do you know
That if someone else
Was given a chance
That they might have worshiped God
A 1000 times better


God loves you
God loves me
With an infinite love


Every day
Is a gift from God
Every day
Is a day freshly minted
For you and me


A day with unlimited potential
A day with unlimited possibilities
A day with unlimited opportunity


What if today
Is the only day
That we are ever going to have
What are you
What am I
Going to do with it


You have life
You have GOD’S LOVE
We have eyewitness testimony
Of Christ’s victory
Over death
