To me-a Saint is a person who is exceptionally charitable, patient,

And kind

Once in grade school-Allison was running at a track meet.  Lindsay’s

Third grade teacher-Mrs. Lenderman was there.  She said, talking

About Lindsay-“I think that child is a Saint.”

My mom and I just looked at each other.  We had long thought that.

ALL of Mary and Dave’s kids, are GREAT kids.

“And he who searches our hearts

Knows the mind of the spirit

Because the spirit intercedes for the SAINTS

In accordance with God’s will.”                                                    Romans 8:27

GUARDIAN ANGELS

Which of us

Hasn’t said that prayer

As children

Or even as adults

When times

Get extremely difficult

Speaks of angels

And even Jesus

Spoke of angels once,

SALT AND LIGHT

Jesus told us

You are the salt

Of the earth

You are the light

Of the world

But what does

It mean

To be salt and light

In today’s world

2000 years ago

Salt was the principal seasoning

That was used to cook

2000 years ago

There was no electricity

So light was a scarcity

And at a premium

So how

Can we

How will we be

Light in today’s world

It can be as simple

As a smile

Or an encouraging word

To someone

Who is having a bad day

Or it can be

To have a listening ear

For someone

Who needs to be heard

It can be as simple

As sending someone

A birthday card or get well card

Or it could be

Visiting a sick neighbor

In the hospital

Maybe we can’t

Change the whole world

As Jesus did

Just maybe

We can change someone’s world

Love, forgive, and be kind

FEAR AND ANXIETY

Do you have

Some fear and anxiety

In your life

Who doesn’t

Fear of illness

Fear of

Not being able to take care of your family

Fear of broken relationships

In our family and with our friends

There is

Only one way to overcome any fear

And that is THROUGH faith in God

“The Lord is my Shepherd

I shall not be in want”                                                                             Psalm 23:1

Fear can be good

Fear can be a motivating force

To do GOOD

“The Lord

Loves righteousness and justice

The earth is full

Of his unfailing love”                                                               Psalm 33:5

Have you ever

Been around a child

Who has an unreasonable fear

And there is nothing you can do

To calm him or her down

That happens to us as adults too

When fear becomes irrational

When things we dream up in our mind

Never really happens

We can only find our peace

In God

“When I am afraid

I will trust in you

In God-whose words I praise

In God I trust-I will not be afraid

What can mortal man

And if what we are fearing happens

We should still be trusting God

For God is

OUR HOPE AND OUR SALVATION

SAINT JUDE---PATRON SAINT OF HOPELESS CASES

Do you ever feel hopeless

I know that I do

Well I have some good news for you

In addition to Jesus

There is a Saint that we can pray to

Or at least ask to intercede for us

On our behalf

His name is Jude---Also known as Thaddeus

Jude was the ½ brother of James the lesser

Both original Apostles

And ½ brothers of Jesus

There was little devotion

To Saint Jude

Because his name was so close to that of Judas

The traitor

That devotion to him became discouraged

But devotion

Began to pick up in the 14^th century

When our Lord himself

Directed Saint Bridget of Sweden

To turn to Saint Jude in faith and confidence

Our Lord told Saint Bridget

That the name of Thaddeus means

“Amiable and loving---and---

He will show himself most willing to help”

Saint Jude’s father’s name was Cleophas

And he was murdered

Because of his outspoken devotion

To the Risen Christ

Mary Cleophas---the Mother of Saint Jude

Was present at Christ’s crucifixion

And after her death

Many miracles were attributed

To her intercession

Jude---like his brother James

Did not believe that Jesus

Was the Son of God

Until after the Resurrection

After the Resurrection

Jude---along with his companion Simon

Preached and taught in Mesopotamia

For ten years

Converting many to Christianity

His teachings

Were primarily against Gnosticism---

The teaching that the sins of the body

Does not affect the sins of the soul

And against the people of his day---

Bearing false witness---about Jesus

And our Christian walk

He taught that Christians

Need to be aware of false teachers

Infiltrating the church

Certainly---at least in my mind

As true today---as it was back then

Maybe more so---just turn on your television set

But maybe---in my mind

His most important teaching

Was that believers

Should be merciful to unbelievers

He and Simon

Made more converts in Persia

Where he was clubbed to death

We all face hopeless situations

In today’s world

Maybe more so than ever

We may lose hope

Because of our health diagnosis

The loss of a loved one

Our finances

A broken relationship within the family

Or for many other reasons

“And we rejoice

In the hope of the glory of God

Not only so

But we also rejoice in our suffering

Because we know that suffering

Produces perseverance; perseverance---character

And character---HOPE

And hope does not disappoint us

Because God has poured out his love

Into our hearts by the Holy Spirit

Whom he has given us”                                           Romans 5:3-5

So when we are feeling hopeless

And like our Lord told Saint Bridget about Saint Jude

We can be confident that:

“HE WILL SHOW HIMSELF MOST WILLING TO HELP”

WITHOUT CHRIST

As Jesus

Got closer and closer

To his destiny

And his teaching

Got harder and harder

Many of his disciples

Walked away

I wonder

If they lived

Happy and fulfilled lives

I wonder

If they found solace

In money

If that replaced our Lord

I wonder

If they found happiness

In being accepted by society

If that replaced

The teaching of our Lord

Dear God

Please help us

To always be

Like Saint Peter who said

“To whom shall we go Lord

You have the words

Of everlasting life”

If we left our Lord

Where would we go

For truth

If we left our Lord

Would we still live

By the golden rule

And what about death

How could we face death

Without God and Christ in our lives

Our Lord

Is our model

He is

Our standard for living

Of course

We will come up short

If we compare ourselves

To our Lord

But death

Will be our loveliest moment

Because

Our Lord did indeed

Possess the words of eternal life

We ask you for the courage

To never run away

BAD HABITS---GOOD HABITS

We all have bad habits

We all have some GOOD habits

Not too easy

To get rid of the bad habits

Is it

There are many forms of addictions

Cigarette smoking-drugs-alcohol-pornography

You can be addicted to anything

Television-computer

Even face book-lol-GOD forbid

I had a problem

With pornography earlier in my life

I am a person

With pretty strong willpower

And TRY as I might

I couldn’t overcome it

But you can beat your addiction

WITH FAITH IN GOD

Jesus explains to us

That when a bad spirit is exercised

If a GOOD SPIRIT

Doesn’t take its place

The bad spirit will return

And you will be

Worse off than before

“When an evil spirit

Comes out of a man

It goes through arid places

Seeking rest

And does not find it

Then it says

“I will return

To the house I left”

When it arrives

It finds the house

Swept clean

And put in order

Then It goes

And takes seven other spirits

More wicked than itself

And they go in

And live there

And the final condition

Of that man

Is worse than the first”                                                  Luke 11:24-26

That is

What can happen

If we try

To beat bad habits

With willpower

But if we replace

Our bad habits

With FAITH IN GOD

With something

Outside of ourselves

LIKE FAITH in God

Maybe we can’t

TOTALLY win the war

And MAYBE we can

But I am here

To tell you

If you develop your faith

If you

REALLY BELIEVE IN GOD

You will find yourself

Winning mental battles

That you were losing before

Instead of watching television

Take a walk

Instead of criticizing someone

PRAISE SOMEONE

Instead of complaining

GIVE THANKS TO GOD

We were

NOT created to do bad things

But to do GOOD things

“Trust in the Lord

And do good

Dwell in the land

And enjoy safe pasture”                                          Psalm 37:3

So how can we

REPLACE bad habits

With good habits

DEVELOP YOUR FAITH

Jesus himself says,

“Blessed are they

Who hear the Word of God

And obey it”                                                          Luke 11:28

It’s not easy

To just stop

A bad habit

In fact-for some of us

It is downright impossible

It is much easier

AND MUCH MORE EFFECTIVE

To replace a bad habit

BY DOING SOMETHING GOOD

YOU CAN’T HAVE IT ALL

I read other people’s writings

And I wonder how they can take those words

And make them turn out so good

Sometimes I get very jealous

And I wonder why I didn’t take those same words

And do the job that another person did

Don’t you know you can’t do it all

Don’t you know you have to be yourself

Don’t you know other people have talents

Don’t be afraid  to let them answer the call

I listen to other people’s songs

I listen to their beautiful lyrics

I hear their harmony

I wonder why I didn’t write that song

I get so frustrated, sometimes I go into hysterics

But don’t you know you can’t have everything

And don’t you know you can’t have it all

Don’t you know you have to be yourself

And let the chips fall

Don’t you know other people can have glory

Without detracting anything from you

Don’t you know other people must live their life story

There isn’t anything wrong with that

As long as you do too

I see the athletes on the tv

And I see the actors at the movies

And I gaze at them admiringly

But somehow I know that shouldn’t be

They’re people just like you and me

All living their own life to their own styles

Somehow, I know they’re not doing anything I couldn’t do

But you have to remember, you can’t have it all

I sometimes wonder if the actor wished he was an athlete

Or the athlete an actor

Or maybe the playboy wants to be a father

Or the father a playboy

Don’t you know you can’t have it all

It’s what you see that your life becomes

So don’t be afraid to answer the call

Don’t be afraid to respect other people’s accomplishments

Let other people have their life story

As long as you do too

FAMILY DAY

We have a father’s day

A mother’s day

A grandparents day

And God knows

What other kinds of day

WHY NOT-A FAMILY DAY

What about a day

Where all people

Can put away their grudges

With their families, their exes, etc.

AWAY-for just one day

I know

We already have Christmas

And I know

I am a bit ideological in my thinking

But what about it?

Would you consider it?

What about a FAMILY DAY for everyone

The following

Is a poem that I wrote about families

I happen to be Catholic/Christian

But my idea

Is for ALL people

Of ALL faiths

A family is life

A family is love

A family is God’s Light

Shining on us

From up above

A family is

Loving each other

Even when we don’t like them

A family is

Being kind to each other

When we don’t want to

A family is life

A family is love

A family is GOD’S LIGHT

Shining on us

From up above

A family is accepting each other

Accepting each other for who they are

Not who you want them to be

A family is FORGIVING each other

When they acted in a way

That we don’t understand

Or

When they don’t even try

To lend a hand

A family is life

HEART AND SOUL       (mom and UNCLE JOHN)

In my mind

The HEART and SOUL of our family

Was my mother and Uncle John

When I think of each of them

I think of L-O-V-E

Where my father was the fun

My mother was the heart of the immediate family

And until about 1990

Most of the holidays were at our house

Particularly Christmas

After that-they moved to Uncle John’s

I can’t remember

How many picnics

How many Thanksgivings

And how many Christmas’

We spent at Uncle John’s and Aunt Karen’s

To me

My mom and Uncle John

WILL ALWAYS BE

THE HEART AND SOUL

OF THE FAMILY

           A physician-a gentile- and the third writer

           Of the Gospel and the Book of Acts

 

          Saint Luke is the patron of doctors-surgeons and artists

         

          At a time in the world

          Where there is so much sickness

          And where there are so many medical mistakes

          We pray to saint Luke for guidance

           And we pray for

           Where there are mistakes

           A just and fair compensation system for all
