To be our FRIEND

When I was in school

I used to love

To hear the instructor say,

“It’s an open book test”

 

In my early days

I used to think

That would make the test much easier

 

What I found out was---

It made the test harder

---much harder

 

Because I found out

That the questions

Were much much harder

And if you didn’t know

Where to look for the answers

Often times---You just ran out of time

 

My friends

Life is a lot like this

 

The Bible is comprised

Of 66 different books---chapters if you will

72 books---if you are Catholic

 

It has every answer

To life’s questions and problems in it

 

And it even

Gives us a few answers

That all of us can use

At all times

 

Answers like, prayer,

“Do not

Be anxious about anything

But in everything

By prayer and petition

With thanksgiving

Present your request to God

 

And the peace of God

Which transcends all understanding

Will guard your hearts

And your minds in Christ Jesus”                                         Philippians 4:6-7

 

Answers like, forgiveness,

“I tell you, NOT seven times

But seventy times seven”                                                      Matthew 18:22

 

Answers like love,

“Love the Lord your God

With all your heart

And with all your soul

And with all your mind

And with all your strength

 

………………

 

Love your neighbor as yourself

There is no commandment

Greater than these”                                                            Mark 12:30-31

 

Catch-all answers

For every single question--- to be sure

 

On how to treat others,

“If your enemy is hungry

Feed him

If he is thirsty

Give him something to drink

In doing this

You will keep burning coals on his head

 

DO NOT be overcome by evil

Going to accept Christ’s challenge

All that you can

To get the job done

 

Even if it is

Only bringing one person to God

That furthers Jesus’ purpose

And help gets the job done

 

The great commission is upon us

Let us begin to make disciples

Today we read about

SOMEONE who wasn't=King Herod

What a disappointing Gospel=

It makes me want to

Wish I could REACH OUT

To Herod=and say=

"DON'T DO IT"

Don't kill John=no matter

What you promised Herodias

"........and he had

John beheaded in the prison"                                                                        Matthew 14:10

Herod promised Herodias anything

UP to half of his kingdom

After her alluring dance=

And she asked=

For John the Baptist's head

Clearly King Herod was NOT MOTIVATED

Towards God=

How about you?=I am

I am MOTIVATED by love=

And the promise=I made all those

Years ago

"TO LIVE for my family=

My friends=

And all people everywhere"

I think of that

At least once every day

Motivated by

MY LOVE for God

And my love

For each and every one

Of us

NOT WORLDLY TREASURES!

"All a person's ways

Seem pure to them=

BUT MOTIVES are weighed

By the Lord"                                                                                               Proverbs 16:2

"Therefore judge nothing

Before the appointed time=

Wait until the Lord comes

He will=bring to light

What is hidden=in darkness

And will expose=THE MOTIVES

Of the heart

At that time=each will receive

Herod was more worried 

About his reputation

And what others=thought ABOUT HIM

Than John's life

How about you?

WHAT MOTIVATES YOU!

Perhaps we all are

NOT so different

Than King Herod

Maybe we too=are driven

By human appearances

And vanity

BEING MOTIVATED

By the LOVE of God

Being motivated

By our love for OTHERS

"But what does it matter?

The important thing

Is that=in every way

Whether from false MOTIVES=or true

Christ is preached=

And beacuse of this

WE ARE NEVER HELPLESS=WHEN WE HAVE GOD=IN OUR LIVES

 

WE ARE NEVER HELPLESS

WHEN WE HAVE GOD

IN OUR LIVES

One thing

That I have come to learn

And realize in this life

Is that

We are NEVER HELPLESS

When we have God

LIVING in our hearts

For even when we come

To the end of our own power

When we can do nothing

On our own

God can STILL DO

Amazing things in our life

In fact

That is WHEN

God CREATES his greatest miracles

In Luke 9

Jesus tells us

The most amazing thing

“Jesus-KNOWING their thoughts

Took a little child

And had him stand before him

Then he said to them,

'WHOEVER welcomes this little child

In my name

Welcomes me;

And whoever welcomes me

Welcomes the one who sent me

For it is the one

Who is least among you all

What is it

That makes a child

“The least among all of you?”

CHILDREN are a lot of

Great things

They are funny-they are smart-

And they are joyful

In many ways

They are the BEST of us

They are innocent

And often without expectation

But children-especially young children 

Can be HELPLESS and dependent

They are often vulnerable

To harm from adults

But that is WHEN

God can create the greatest miracles

In us

WHEN we come 

To the end of our own power

And we are dependent on God's

“Power BELONGS to you God”                                                Psalm 62:11

“You God-are awesome

In your sanctuary

The God of Israel

Gives POWER and strength

To his people”                                                                          Psalm 68:35

We are NEVER helpless

When we have God in our lives

THE POWER of God

Can OVERCOME ALL

ALL of Jesus' miracles

Were dependent on GOD'S POWER

As can be seen

As the POWER OF GOD

In the death of his own Son

The power of God

The power of Jesus

The power of LOVE

CAN AND DOES overcome all

It's HUMBLING to recognize

How HELPLESS we can be

Even in certain situations

As adults

Particularly in death and illness

In finances and in relationship

After relationship

“ARISE-Lord-lift up your hand-

O God

Do not forget the helpless”                                                    Psalm 10:12

For when we come

To ACCEPT ourselves and others

In our weakness

Rather than strength

We welcome Jesus 

And we can see God

We FORGET that we worship

A JOYOUS GOD=

PRAISE GOD JOYFULLY!

MARKING TIME WITH GOD

On joyous occasions too!

 

“These are the FESTIVALS

Of the Lord=

Which you shall CELEBRATE……..”                                                                                   Leviticus 23:4

 

Don’t forget that

GOD LOVES YOU!=

Don’t forget

To PRAISE God

To honor his ways

 

Don’t forget=that God

Is MORE than

Just pleasing him

 

That God is MORE than

Obeying rules=and following instructions

 

God wants us

To MARK TIME with him

To CELEBRATE him==at all times

 

EVEN Jesus went to weddings

And FAMILY get togethers

 

So celebrate God=CELEBRATE JESUS

At parties=at weddings

At family get togethers=

God and our Lord Jesus

Want to be PRESENT

IN your good times too

 

Mark time with God=

Praise God joyfully

DURING THE GOOD TIMES TOO

 

“The Lord is

My strength and my defense

He has=become my salvation

 

He is my God

And I will PRAISE HIM=

My Father’s God

And I will exalt him”                                                                                                           Exodus 15:2

 

“The Lord lives!

PRAISE be to my rock

 

Exalted be my God

The ROCK=my salvation”                                                                                         2 Samuel 22:47

 

I think=we forget

That God=that Jesus

Wants to be part

Of ALL of our lives=

THE GOOD TIMES TOO

 

He wants to celebrate

The HAPPY family occasions=

He is a good LOVING GOD

 

God uses order-

God uses rules

To CARE FOR

All of his creation

 

So lovingly

KEEP the rules

Of the Lord=it helps us

To be healthier-happier=and holier

 

But MARK TIME with God

In good times too

Don’t forget=to PRAISE the Father

And his Son

 

“……..to the PRAISE

Of his glorious grace

 

Which he has freely given us

In the ONE he loves”                                                                                                               Ephesians 1:6

 

MARK TIME WITH GOD

At all times=

During the GOOD TIMES too

 

Honor him and show your faith

CHEERS TO HIS LOVE!

            July 29^th-is the feast day of Saint Martha

 

            “As Jesus and his disciples were on their way

             He came to a village where a woman named Martha

             Opened her home to him

            

             She had a sister called Mary-who sat at the Lord’s feed

             Listening to what he said

             But Martha was distracted by all the preparations

             That had to be made

 

             She came to him and asked,

             “Lord-don’t you care that my sister has left me

              To do the work by herself

              TELL HER to help me!”

 

              “MARTHA-MARTHA”-the Lord answered

               You are worried and upset about many things

               But only ONE THING is needed

 

               Mary has chosen what is BETTER

               And it will NOT be taken away from her”                            Luke 38-42

Her cleaning and cooking

When she should have been

Sitting at his feet

RELUCTANCE-

HOW MANY TIMES?

How many times

Does it take you

To RESPOND to GOD'S WORD

When he tells you

To do something

That you don't want to do?

IF you are like me

It takes a lot-

For me to respond

ONLY the Lord knows

For sure-for it is

That many

TODAY we read

About the story O f Jonah

“The word of the LORD

Came to Jonah

A second time........”                                                           Jonah 3:1

The first time

The Word of the Lord

Came to Jonah

He took off

As FAST as he could

And caught a ship to TARNISH

HOPING to out run 

The whole thing

And after a violent storm

He ended up 

In the belly

Of a whale

RELUCTANCE-

How many times?

You can't out run God

I should know that

Jonah-a prophet-should now that

And you should know that too

For us BELIEVERS

God ALWAYS gets his way

And that is BEST-

For he KNOWS

What he is doing

I certainly don't

“He will RESPOND

To the prayer

Of the destitute

He will not despise 

Their plea”                                                                         Psalm 102:17

“'In that day-I will respond

Declares the Lord-

'I will RESPOND to the skies

And they will respond

RELUCTANCE-

How many times?

We may as well RESPOND QUICKLY

For the Lord  knows the WAY

But I sense Jonah

Would still be reluctant today

I know I am

The Lord does know

And lead you along

And we CAN only imagine

From his ENCOUNTERS=with the Lord

For the BETTER

With the HOLY FATHER

God our Holy Father

MEET with God=OUR HOLY FATHER!

MORE of the FRUITS of the SPIRIT

ENCOUNTERING GOD=

Finding God in the

Valleys and mountains

Of my very own life

 

“Come let us

Go up to the MOUNTAIN

Of the Lord

 

He will teach us

So that we may walk

In his paths

Go out from Zion=

The word of the Lord=From Jerusalem”                                                                             Micah 4:2

 

Have you had ENCOUNTERS

With God our Holy Father?

With Jesus?

 

HOW have you changed

Because of it?

Are you=RADIANT=

In the Lord?

 

Dear Lord=SHINE through us and me!

A SHARED MISSION

Jesus and his cousin-John

Came to earth

On A SHARED MISSION

FAMILY TIES-

Ties that bind

The message

That makes ALL the difference

“His head

Was brought on a platter

And given to the girl

Who took it 

To her mother

His disciples

Came and took away

The corpse

And buried him

And they went

And told Jesus”                                                              Matthew 14:11-12

IMAGINE how Jesus 

Must have felt

WHEN HEARING of his cousin John's death

And betrayal

And his head

Being served on a silver platter

I have cousins

That I am very close to

In my life

I can ONLY IMAGINE

How Jesus must have felt

I can tell you

That WHEN I learned

Of my cousin Jimmy's death

In his 50's

And my cousin Mary Ann's death

In her 30's

I FELT AWFUL

Jesus and John

SHARED A MISSION

With their lives

John the messenger

PREPARING THE WAY

Jesus the ACTUAL MESSAGE

The walking and talking

OF GOD'S LOVE

“The spirit himself

TESTIFIES with our spirit

That we

ARE GOD'S CHILDREN

And if we

Are children

Then we are heirs

Heirs of God

And co-heirs with Christ

IF indeed we share

In his sufferings

In order

That we may also SHARE

In his GLORY”                                                                    Romans 8:16-17

So Jesus

SHARED in John's sufferings

Just as John shared

In JESUS' FUTURE GLORY

And just 

As I shared

In the lost lives

Of my cousins-

I get to share

In the FUTURE GLORY

Of our FAMILY

We are ALL

On a SHARED MISSION

IN THIS LIFE

To continue to bring GOD'S LOVE

And Jesus' life

To this earth

No amount of setbacks

Will thwart us

And no matter

How many people have to die

GOD'S GLORY

WILL TRIUMPH in the end

We are on

A SHARED MISSION

To feel

That LEAP OF JOY

WHEN God's love

When Jesus' love

SPREADS

To every single person On this earth

That is

OUR SHARED MISSION

HEAVEN-WHERE THERE IS ONLY LOVE

 

 

I have lived for love

But I haven’t seen

A lot of it in this world

Someday I hope

To live in Heaven

 

Live in Heaven

Where there is only love

 

I’ve seen lies

I’ve seen gossip

I’ve seen so much misfortune I can’t believe it

 

I want to

Live in Heaven

Where there is only love

 

I watch the evening news

I see stories of rape and murder

I see stories of child abuse

Sometimes I see so much of it

I can’t stand it anymore

 

Someday-I want to live in Heaven

Someday-I want to live

Where there is only love

 

Someday

I hope to live in Heaven

Someday

How many of you guys

Are parents?  I’ll bet

There is nothing you

Wouldn’t do=for your CHILDREN

 

That is the way

OUR LOVING FATHER!

Feel s about us=his ADOPTED CHILDREN

He loves us

With TOTAL abandon

OUR LOVING FATHER!

 

“Merciful and gracious

Is the Lord

 

SLOW to anger

And abiding in KINDNESS=

He will=not always chide

 

Nor does he

Keep his wrath forever”                                                                                                        Psalm 103:8-9

 

A loving father

OUR LOVING FATHER!

 

Yes our God is just

Like a loving parent

“Slow to anger=and

ABOUNDING IN KINDNESS”                                                                                                  

 

No matter

How much he disapproves

No matter=how much

We let OUR GOD DOWN

 

Our God

Is a LOVING FATHER

Our God=is a loving PARENT

 

I know my earthly parents

Were like that

ALWAYS BELIEVING IN ME

Always loving me=

And that is the way

OUR LOVING FATHER=is with us

 

“A FATHER=to the fatherless=

A defender of widows

Is God=in his holy dwelling”                                                                                                   Psalm 68:5

 

“Listen to your FATHER

Who gave you life

 

And do not despise your mother

When she is old”                                                                                                              Proverbs 23:22

 

“Jesus said=

‘FATHER FORGIVE THEM

For they do not know

What they are doing……..’”                                                                                                       Luke 23:34

 

OUR LOVING FATHER!

Jesus-our loving brother

 

Isn’t that the way

That it is=with us loving CHILDREN=

Sometimes we

Do NOT KNOW what we are doing

 

But our loving parent

OUR LOVING FATHER

Loves us anyway

 

“Children’s children=are a crown

To the aged

 

But PARENTS are

The pride of their children”                                                                                                   Proverbs 17:6

 

“Children=obey

YOUR PARENTS=in the Lord

For this is right

 

‘Honor your FATHER

And mother--------

Which is=the first commandment

With a promise……..”                                                                                                            Ephesians 6:1

 

Dear Lord=help us

To always=HONOR our earthly parents

 

And even more so

Our loving Father God=who wants

ONLY good things

For us=and LOVES US TOTALLY!

 

In Jesus’ name=and in the name=of our always and FOREVER LOVING FATHER
