FIGHTING FOR GOD

The other day

Was a day

In which we honored

Our military

MEMORIAL DAY

Those who gave up for their lives

For our physical freedom

AND RIGHTFULLY SO

I say thank you to them

But we also need to honor those

Who have given their lives

For God and for others

In a spiritual way

Putting on the armor of God

FIGHTING FOR GOD in our world

“The King of Israel answered, tell him:

“One who put on his armor

Should not boast

Like the one who takes it off”                                1 Kings 20:11

Spiritual warfare

Is putting on the armor of God

FIGHTING FOR GOD
LIVING FOR GOD
LOVING FOR GOD

In our world

In military warfare

The attack can be lethal

Can be fatal-can be deadly

In spiritual warfare

The attacks of this world

The meanness-the cruelty

Of this world

Are no less deadly

They can leave us dead inside

But if we use

The proper weapons

We can survive

The weapons of God

Are kindness, forgiveness, and love

“Put on

The FULL armor of God

So that you can take your stand

Against the devil’s schemes”                                        Ephesians 6:11

KEEP GOD ALIVE-in your heart

FEAR AND ANXIETY

Do you have

Some fear and anxiety

In your life

Who doesn’t

Fear of illness

Fear of

Not being able to take care of your family

Fear of broken relationships

In our family and with our friends

There is

Only one way to overcome any fear

And that is THROUGH faith in God

“The Lord is my Shepherd

I shall not be in want”                                                                             Psalm 23:1

Fear can be good

Fear can be a motivating force

To do GOOD

“The Lord

Loves righteousness and justice

The earth is full

Of his unfailing love”                                                               Psalm 33:5

Have you ever

Been around a child

Who has an unreasonable fear

And there is nothing you can do

To calm him or her down

That happens to us as adults too

When fear becomes irrational

When things we dream up in our mind

Never really happens

We can only find our peace

In God

“When I am afraid

I will trust in you

In God-whose words I praise

In God I trust-I will not be afraid

What can mortal man

Do to me?”                                                                          Psalm 56:3-4

And if what we are fearing happens

We should still be trusting God

For God is

OUR HOPE AND OUR SALVATION

“DO NOT

LET YOUR HEARTS BE TROUBLED

Trust in God

Trust also in me”                                                                       John 14:1

Perfect love

Drives out our fear

Perfect love

OVERCOMES our weakness

“My grace is sufficient for you

For my power

Is made perfect

In weakness”                                                                     2 Corinthians 12:9

So our imperfections

Our weaknesses

Our failings

Brings God’s gift of love

And his gift of grace

To overcome

Anything and everything we are facing

“EVERY good and perfect gift

Is from above

Coming down

From the Father of the heavenly lights

Who does not change

Like shifting shadows”                                                              James 1:17

Dear Lord-we pray

That our anxieties and fears

LEAD US TO YOU

The one who saves

The one who protects

And the one who SHINES the light

IN ANY darkness

All through the Bible

There are references

To forgiveness

Both human forgiveness

And forgiveness by God

To us

The great thing about forgiveness

Is that

You cannot earn it

It is freely given

To you by God

Or someone else

Esau forgives Jacob

Even after he steals his birthright

Joseph forgives his brothers

After they left him for dead

Stephen---the first Christian martyr

Forgave those who stoned him including Saul

And the loving father

Forgives his long lost son

After he squandered everything

That he had

And then their is

The forgiveness of God

“If you, Oh Lord, kept a record

Of sins, oh Lord, who could stand

But with you there is forgiveness

Therefore you are feared”                                             Psalm 130:4

And

“Who is a God like you

Who pardons sins and forgives

The transgression of the remnant of his inheritance

You do not stay angry forever

But delight to show mercy”                                            Micah 7:18

How often should we forgive

Our brothers and sisters

Surely that is more than generous

“I tell you---not seven times

But 70 times 7 times,” Jesus said                                       Matthew 18:22

“Father forgive them---for they know not

What they do”

Bearing fruit

Based on the fruit of God

The teaching of Christ

If you are

I guarantee you

You are

Living a life

That is bearing fruit

“The fruit of the spirit is love,

Joy, peace, patience, kindness,

Goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control

Against such things

There is no law”                                                                    Galatians 5:22-24

EVIL has no chance

Against such a person

Bearing ALL these qualities

And these people

Are bearing fruit

And I urge you

NOT to give up on people

JUST LIKE FRUIT

Some people take awhile

To mature-to ripen

GOOD people

Will bear good fruit

“NO good tree

Bears bad fruit

Nor does a bad tree

Bear good fruit

Each tree is recognized

By its own fruit”                                                                 Luke 6:43

Give it time

Give people time

“He is like a tree

Planted by streams of water

Which yields fruit in season

And whose leaf does not wither

Whatever he does prospers”                                                   Psalm 1:3

There are many good people

In this world

Like fruit

They need time to develop

And if you give them

This time

I guarantee you

When you leave this world

You will be leaving much fruit

Just live

With the fruits of the spirit:

“Love-joy-peace-patience

Kindness-goodness-faithfulness

Gentleness-and self-control”

And you will

Bear much fruit

With your life

“By their fruit

SAINT JAMES

JAMES THE GREATER

James the Greater

Was a son of Zebedee

Was an Apostle

And together

With his brother John

Were called “sons of thunder”

“Going on from there

He saw two other brothers

James-son of Zebedee

And his brother John

They were in a boat

With their father Zebedee

Preparing their nets

Jesus called them

And immediately

They left their boat

And their father

And followed him”                                                                Matthew 4:21-22

Thus James

Was an original Apostle

We know that James

Along with Peter

And his brother John

Were present at the Transfiguration

“After six days

Jesus took with him

Peter, James and John-the brother of James

And led them up to a high mountain

By themselves”                                                                             Matthew 17:1

There they saw Jesus

Talking with Moses and Elijah

And we know

That James and John were so presumptuous

SO HUMAN
That they asked for their spot

In the kingdom

“Teacher,” they said,

“We want you to do for us

Whatever we ask”

“What do you want me to do

For you,” Jesus asked

They replied

“Let one of us

Sit at the right

And the other at your left

In your glory”

And Jesus told them,

“Whoever wants to become great

Among you

Must be a servant

And whoever wants to be first

Must be slave to all”                                                 Matthew 10:35-44

In other words

They have to prove themselves first

As we too

Must prove ourselves

To be a servant of God

He was the first Apostle

To die for the Christian faith

Legend has it

That he preached the Gospel in Spain

After the Resurrection

That is why today

He is the patron Saint of Spain

He was put to death by the sword

By King Herod

So today-his feast today

We pray Dear Lord

That we prove ourselves just like Saint James

Only NOT by dying

For the faith

But by LIVING for it

Is the power of creation

Simply put

It is the sustaining of life

Living inside of you

It is also

Our tool against Satan

Against the forces of darkness

Living in the world

When the devil

Tempted Jesus in the desert

Jesus answered,

“It is written

“Man does not live on bread alone

But on every word

That comes from

The mouth of God”                                                          Matthew 4:4

Are you in the word

Granted

If you have

Never picked up a Bible

The process can be overwhelming

Just pick up the Bible

And start reading

About a subject that interests you

And soon

You will be saying

Recently

I attended the graduation

Of my nieces-Lindsay and Stephanie

They both graduated

With high honors

And I had

Just the most fantastic time

The word “gradual”

Is the root meaning of graduation

And NONE of us graduate anything

In one giant leap

Just as

Lindsay didn’t graduate nursing school

Or Stephanie high school

In one giant leap        ( one grade one step at a time )

LIFE throws at us

Some very DIFFICULT obstacles

Birth-illness-financial obligations

And some VERY difficult people

And circumstances-in our daily life

And AGAIN

It is a one step at a time process

When we first

BEGIN to learn about God

It is a process

And we should be further along today

Than we were last year

At this time

“SINCE we LIVE by the spirit

Let us keep in step

With the spirit”                                                                  Galatians 5:25

And the amount

Of our progress of pursuing God

Of living a life of love-forgiveness

And kindness toward others

Is NOT ALWAYS determined by us

SOMETINES-it is DETERMINED by God

All we can do

IS make the effort

“In his heart

A man PLANS his course

But the Lord determines his steps”                                          Proverbs 16:9

“I know-O Lord-

That a man’s life

Is NOT his own

It is not for man

To direct his steps”                                                                       Jeremiah 10:23

While GRADUATING LIFE

By LIVING a life of LOVE

Is a GRADUAL process

As was and is the case

For Lindsay and Stephanie

We have the SUPREME example to FOLLOW

To set our sights on

“To this

YOU WERE CALLED

Because Christ suffered for you

Leaving you an EXAMPLE

That you should FOLLOW in his steps”                                                 1 Peter 2:21

Well Lindsay and Stephanie

Were successful in their studies

And ONE DAY

WE TOO will be successful

IF we take our lives

Our CHRISTIANITY seriously

One day we will hear

From God and Christ Jesus himself:

“WELL DONE good and faithful servant

You have been FAITHFUL with a few things

I will put you in charge of many things

COME AND SHARE in your master’s HAPPINESS”                                Matthew 25;21

And WHEN

You HEAR these words

You will KNOW

You have been successful

Have you ever been around

Someone who is arrogant

Someone-who knows it all

Who KNOWS everything

Knowledge is great

But these people can be tedious

So full of their own self-importance

It is knowledge of God

And God’s ways

That are most important

“Granted

But they were broken off

Because of unbelief

And you stand by FAITH

Do not be arrogant

But be afraid

For if God

Did not spare the natural branches

He will not

Spare you either”                                                                     Romans 11:20

PUT ON THE KNOWLEDGE OF GOD

“The fear of the Lord

Is the beginning of knowledge

But fools

Despise wisdom and discipline”                                               Proverbs 1:7

Living off the knowledge of man

Put on

The knowledge of God

“We know that

We all possess knowledge

Knowledge puffs up

BUT LOVE BUILDS UP

The man

Who thinks he knows something

Does not yet know

As he ought to know

But the man

WHO LOVES GOD

Take a bow

Let the light

A city on a hill cannot be hidden

Neither do people light a lamp

And put it under a bowl

Instead they put it on its stand

And it gives light

Mary Magdalene was probably

Jesus’ BEST FRIEND

She is often called

THE APOSTLE TO THE APOSTLES

Because he appeared to her first

And she carried to the news

To the rest of the men

Mary said to the gardener

NOT KNOWING he was Jesus,

“Sir, if you carried him away

Tell me where you have put him

And I will get him”                                                          John 20:15

The gardener then said, “Mary”

Mary then turned toward him

And cried out, “Rabboni,” which means Teacher                      John 20:16

She then went to tell the others

The news,

“I have seen the Lord”                                                         John 20:18

Jesus had been Mary’s teacher

About the Word of God

And it is said,

He cast out, “seven demons” from her

She may have been the sister

To Martha of Bethany and Lazarus

And anointed Christ’s feet

It is known

That she was present

At the crucifixion of Jesus

Along with his mother, the BELOVED disciple,

And some other women

She is

Considered to be

The patron Saint of repentant sinners

And of the contemplative life

May we FIND PEACE in Christ

As our sister, Mary Magdalene, did

How many of you

Need a miracle in your life

God knows

I do

A miracle

In your health

Waiting on God

Waiting on a miracle

In your marriage

Or in your family

Waiting on God

Waiting on a miracle

A miracle in your finances

I sure could use one of those

I think we all could

Do you know what a miracle is

A miracle is an extraordinary event

Done through the POWER OF GOD

I have ALREADY had a miracle

In my life---OK maybe a few

I’ll bet

If you think about it

Really think about it

I’ll bet

You have had some too

NOT only do you and I

Need a miracle

Our country

Needs a miracle

Our world

Needs a miracle

Waiting on God

Waiting on a miracle

Waiting on

THE EXTRAORDINARY POWER OF GOD

I got some news for you

God is quite capable and willing

All it takes is some FAITH

And some BELIEF

And us turning back to God

God made the world

In seven days

I call that a miracle

God created Adam and Eve

Out of nothing---us too

LIFE itself is a miracle

God told Noah to build a boat

He did---and God SAVED them

I call that a miracle

God gave Abraham and Sarah a child

At a very old age

I call that a miracle

God parted the Red Sea

For Moses and his people

Still another miracle

David slayed Goliath

With a sling shot

Even one more miracle

The key element

In ALL of these miracles

Is that first there was faith

Faith is needed---belief is needed

For God to use his power

To make the unseen---seen

Fast forward to the New Testament

And we find Jesus

Performing MIRACLE AFTER MIRACLE

Healing after healing

A royal official came to Jesus and said,

“Sir, come down before my son dies”                                           John 4:49  

Jesus replied,

“You may go---your son will live”                                                 John 4:50

When the man returned home

He found his son alive

He inquired as to the time

And found out---it was the exact time

Jesus had said,

“Your son will live”

Waiting on God

Waiting on a miracle  

Martha and Mary

Sent word to Jesus,

“The one you love, Lord, is sick”                                                     John 11:3

When he heard this, Jesus said,

“The sickness will not end in death

No it is for God’s glory

So that God’s Son

May be glorified through it”                                                               John 11:4

Jesus waited 2 days

Then he and his disciples

Went to Martha and Mary’s house

Through Judea---the place

Where they had just tried to stone him

Jesus said to Martha and Mary,

“Your brother will rise again”                                                              John 11:23

Martha answered,

“I know he will rise again

In the Resurrection

At the last day”                                                                          John 11:24

Jesus said,

“I am the RESURRECTION and the LIFE

He who believes in me will LIVE

Even though he dies

And whoever Lives and believes in me

Will NEVER die---do you believe that?”                                     John 11:25 & 26

She must have believed---Lazarus lived

And walked the earth again

Do you believe this---Do I

Jesus said to Thomas,

“Because you have seen me

You have believed

Blessed are they who have NOT seen

Yet believed”                                                                                      John 20:29

Today---February 11^th---is the feast day of OUR LADY OF LOUDES

The day of the first apparition of the Blessed Mother to Saint Bernadette

Lourdes, France is a place where many miracles have occurred

It is ALSO THE DAY that I walked out of the hospital after my first surgery

A MIRACLE is defines as EXTRAORDINARY events done through GOD’S POWER

But ALWAYS REMEMBER that God uses the ORDINARY events of life to show his

EXTRAORDINARY POWER

                             

HUMILITY

WITNESS

Do you ever

Stop and think

That the one thing

Our Lord wanted us to learn from him

Was and is to act with humility

Humility

Is the quality

Of being modest and respectful

It is seen as being humble

Or grounded

But how do most of us

Live our lives today

We seek flattery

We seek

The applause of the crowd

And we seek riches

Nothing humble or grounded

In that

“He has showed you-o man

What is good

And what does the Lord

Require of you

To act justly and to love mercy

And to walk humbly

With your God”                                                                              Micah 6:8

That is

Exactly what our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ did

And HOW was he repaid

With a broken body

With a broken heart

And with ALL of his disciples and friends deserting him

But he could do it

For he was GOD

And for that

He is exalted today

But what about us

Poor humans

Will we even make the effort

To walk humbly

Saint Paul

Encourages us to do so

“Live in harmony

With one another

Do not be proud

But be willing to associate

With people of low position

Do NOT be conceited”                                               Romans 12:16

That is exactly

Who Christ was

That is exactly

What he did

And he took much criticism

For WHO he chose

To be his twelve apostles

SO KNOW

That whatever your state in life

WHOEVER you are

That GOD CHOOSES you

Our God

Is not too good for you

The question is

DO YOU THINK

You are too good for God

Know that

God loves each of us

With a special individual kind of love

A little bit hard to believe

A little bit overwhelming

THAT GOD CHOOSES YOU AND ME

And the more humble you are

The more humility

That you have

The MORE SPECIAL you are too God

“Blessed are the poor in spirit

For theirs is the kingdom of heaven”                                                Matthew 5:3

“DO NOTHING

Out of selfish ambition

Or vain conceit

But in HUMILITY

Consider others

Better than yourselves”                                                                Philippians 2:3

NOT an easy thing to do

To consider others

Better than ourselves

Yet that is what Christ did

That is why

He is exalted today

OVERCOMING DISCOURAGEMENT

We often become

Discouraged or disappointed

On our life’s journey

Sometimes it’s just

The ordinary things of life

Our job isn’t going right

We score badly on a test

In school

Someone looks at us

The wrong way

Or says the wrong thing

At the wrong time

Or it could be

Something more major

Like a health diagnosis

Bad finances

Or a relationship breaking apart

In ANY case

The question becomes

How do we overcome being discouraged

And WHERE

Do we find HOPE

In the book of Joshua

God appoints Joshua

To succeed Moses

And Joshua is wondering

If he has what it takes

AS YOU AND I

Sometimes wonder

IF we have what it takes

To overcome our obstacles

And SUCCEED in life

God tells Joshua

“Have I not commanded you

Be strong and courageous

Do not be terrified

DO NOT BE DISCOURAGED

For the Lord your God

Will be with you

WHEREVER YOU GO”                                                                Joshua 1:9

And I tell you

BE STRONG AND COURAGEOUS

In whatever obstacles

You are facing in life

WIN FROM WITHIN

WE HAVE what it takes

The Lord your God

The Lord my God

OUR GOD IS WITH US

Of whom or what

Should we be afraid

“WHY are you so downcast

Oh my soul

Why so disturbed within me

PUT YOUR HOPE IN GOD

For I will yet praise him

My Savior-and my God”                                                                           Psalm 42:5-6

So in Psalm 42

We find the answer

To being discouraged

PUT YOUR HOPE IN GOD

And WHAT EXACTLY

Is this thing called HOPE

It is KNOWING

That when we run into discouragement

And into difficulty

That tomorrow can be-and WILL BE BETTER

If we just TRUST IN GOD

“Therefore

Prepare your minds for action

Be self-controlled

Set your hope

Rely on the GRACE

To be given you

When Jesus Christ is REVEALED”                                                              1 Peter 1:13-14

And Jesus Christ

Has been REVEALED

To you and me

So we have the POWER

WITHIN us

TO OVERCOME every discouragement in our life

You have WHAT IT TAKES

WIN FROM WITHIN

Find your hope IN GOD
