CHAPTER 21=THE SWORD OF=YAHWEH’S  JUDGMENT

 

Lines 1-5

The  LORD=Comes against Jerusalem

 

THE WORK=OF YAHWEH’S SWORD

 

-God speaking AGAINST Israel=A favorable land=is a TERRIBLE THING

 

-God not just=AGAINST THE LAND

But more importantly=THE PEOPLE

 

-NOT against special people=But ALL PEOPLE

BOTH righteous and wicked=come UNDER THE SWORD

 

=THE WORLD would know=That GOD HIMSELF

Was behind this GREAT JUDGMENT

 

LINES 6-7

THE SIGHS=of the PROPHET

 

God wanted EZEKIEL=to have the SAME BROKEN HEART=as he did

About this situation

 

Jerusalem and Judah knew=JUDGMENT WAS COMING

From Ezekiel=Jeremiah=and OTHER PROPHETS

 

-But they did NOT=take the message seriously

 

WHEN the Babylonian army came=their spirit

WOULD BE COMPLETELY BROKEN

 

=The judgment was CERTAIN=and it broke Jeremiah’s

An Ezekiel’s HEART=Because of the GREAT DEVASTATION=of the land=and its people

 

LINES 8-17

THE PROPHECY=OF YAHWEH’S SWORD

 

POETRY MESSAGE

-The READINESS of God’s sword

Against his people=ie.  SHARPENED for a barbaric slaughtering

 

-Zedekiah=and his nation=would be DESTROYED

Like a metal sword=does with wood

 

-The army of Babylonia=would come against=Judah and Jerusalem

Because God=PUT THE SWORD=In their hands

 

-This was the THIRD TIME=so double  damage was coming

Nebuchadnezzar  had already=Invaded Jerusalem twice

 

-The suggestion is=that after this is done=At Yahweh’s direction

THE JUDGMENT will not cease

 

LINES 18-21

THE PATH OF THE SWORD

 

TWO PATHS=for the sword of JUDGMENT

Ie.=A CHOICE for the sword=God is explaining to Ezekiel

 

1.=Rabbah and the AMMONITES=or

2.=Judah and FORTIFIED JERUSALEM

 

Ezekiel=PICTURES

Nebuchadnezzar=CHOOSING at the ROADS

 

LINES 22-23

The decision=was to GO TO JERUSALEM

 

-Ironic in pagan usage

YAHWEH was GUIDING Nebuchadnezzar

 

God was bringing=THIS INQUIRY=to Jerusalem and Judah

 

LINES 24-27

THE HUMBLING OF=the Prince of Judah

 

-God would REMEMBER their sin=and so would Nebuchadnezzar

 

The people PRAYED=they would forget=But GOD WOULD NOT=and

Neither would Nebuchadnezzar

 

-Zedekiah=and his people=WOULD BE JUDGED

Ie.    “REMOVE the turban=Take out the crown”

 

-Zedekiah and his people=WOULD BE HUMBLED

THE HUMBLE=would be=THE ONLY ONES LEFT

 

-3 times=

OVERTHROWN=Overthrown=overthrown

Nebuchadnezzar SUBJUGATED Jerusalem=3 times

 

The 3^rd time=would be COMPLETE DESTRUCTION and conquest

Zedekiah’s REIGN=would be overthrown

 

IE=NO MORE DESCENDANTS=of David=UNTIL Jesus Christ

And=waiting for=ULTIMATE FULFILLMENT

 

LINES 28-32

The COMING REPROACH=of the AMMONITES

 

JUDGMENT=would come to the AMMONITES too

Ie.   AMMON=East of the Jordan River

 

The Ammonites would completely DISAPPEAR=and

They would NOT BE REMEMBERED
