SAINT BARNABAS

Barnabas was a Levite
And his name
Means, “son of consolation”

Barnabas was an early Christian disciple
But not one
Of the original twelve
He is responsible
For introducing Paul
To the other 12

Paul and Barnabas
Were sent to Antioch
And together
Took the first Christian mission
Which began in Cypress

Barnabas supported the early gentile Christians

Paul and Barnabas quarreled
And separated for awhile

It is believed
That Barnabas had a wide apostolate
And even returned to Cypress to evangelize

Legend claims
That Barnabas died a martyr’s death
In the year of 61 AD
At Salamis

The order of Barnabites
Founded by Antony Zaccaria
At Milan-in the year of 1530
Was taken from the name of Barnabas
And it is believed
That Barnabas was Milan’s first bishop

Barnabas’ true claim to fame
Is the PROMINENT part
He took
In the development
Of the early Christian church

Today-June 11th-is his feast day
