Is reading-living=and PRACTICING

THE BEATITUDES

 

They are=part of

Jesus’=SERMON ON THE MOUNT

If=you haven’t read them=or know them

Check them out=they are in the BIBLE

Mathew 5:3 through 5:11

 

“BLESSED ARE=the poor in spirit

For theirs is= the KINGDOM of heaven”                                                                               Matthew 5:3

 

Today=on ALL SAINTS DAY

Let us realize=that the BEATITUDES

Were part of their lives=EACH

And every day

 

Each Beatitude begins=with

The word BLESSED=some think

The word Blessed=also means HAPPY

 

“BLESSED are those=who mourn

For they will be comforted”                                                                                             Matthew 5:4

“BLESSED are the meek=for they

Will inherit the earth”                                                                                                    Matthew 5:5

 

SOME SCHOLARS believe that

LIVING the beatitudes means that

YOU ARE NOT LOST=that you

Are ON=the right path

The path

 

The Lord Jesus=and OUR HEAVENLY FATHER

Wants us to=take to him

“BLESSED are those=who hunger

And thirst for righteousness=for

They will be filled”                                                                                                          Matthew 9:6

“BLESSED are the merciful=for they

Will be shown mercy”                                                                                                            Matthew 9:7

 

We all GET LOST=in this world

At one time or another=IF we are

Staying CLOSE to the Lord=we

Will get back to him by

LIVING THESE BEATITUDES

 

POOR IN SPIRIT=does not mean

We are spiritually destitute=it just means

We are POWERLESS=to help ourselves

 

But if we are=LIVING THE BEATITUDES

We are=ON the right track=and

BLESSED ARE WE!

 

“BLESSED are=the pure in heart

For they will see God”                                                                                                              Matthew 9:8

“BLESSED are the peacemakers=

For they will be called=children of God”                                                                            Matthew 9:9

 

Yes=BLESSED ARE WE=when

We are LOSING=our health battles=

BLESSED are we=when we are losing

OUR FINANCIAL BATTLES=and BLESSED ARE WE

When we are losing the relationship battles too!

 

“BLESSED are those=who are persecuted

Because of righteousness=for theirs is

The kingdom of heaven”                                                                                                              Matthew 9:10

 

“BLESSED ARE YOU=when people

Insult you=persecute you=and falsely say

ALL kinds of evil things=against you

Because of me”                                                                                                                   Matthew 9:11

 

So stay=TOTALLY DEPENDENT

On our Holy Father God=and his SON=Jesus

And you will/I will/WE WILL

BE on the right path=

BLESSED ARE WE!

 

WHEN WE are lost=and the Lord

BRINGS us back to him

God’s salvation history=we are

PART OF CREATION=part of

OUR GOD’S DIVINE PLAN!

 

“In the beginning=GOD CREATED

“Let them praise=the name

Of the Lord=for at his command

“They exchanged the truth

About God=for a lie=and worshipped

Dear brothers and sisters=what has

HAPPENED TO US?

 

So many of us=have traded in

OUR LOVE OF GOD=and

LOVE OF NEIGHBOR

 

To worship MATERIAL THINGS=and

Go for things like pornography=alcohol

And drugs=we have=LOST OUR WAY!

 

We are=FOLLOWING the world’s way

And NOT=our Loving God’s way

We have FORGOTTEN we are

PART OF=GOD’S PLAN!

 

“For since=THE CREATION

Of the world=God’s invisible qualities--------

His eternal power=and DIVINE NATURE-------

Have been clearly seen=

 

Being understood from=what has

Been made=so that people

Are without excuse”                                                                                                           Romans 1:20

 

“HIS DIVINE POWER=has given us

Everything we need=for a godly life

 

Through our knowledge of him=who

Called us=by his very great

And precious promises…….”                                                                                       2 Peter 1:3

 

Yes Our Jesus=OUR GOD

INVITES US=to turn back=to him and

Be a PART of HIS DIVINE CREATION=to be

Godly Saints and souls=in this life

We are=MEANT to be=PART OF

GOD’S DIVINE PLAN!

 

So love God=with YOUR WHOLE HEART

And soul=and LOVE your neighbor

As your self=PRAYING DAILY and

Reading the SCRIPTURES=BE A

PART OF=GOD’S DIVINE PLAN

 

The BEST is yet to come=for

You and for me=be a part of GOD’S KINGDOM

God WANTS to use you/me for others

We just have to ALLOW HIM

To use us

WORKING THROUGH US!

Our BODIES=to FURTHER his work

In this world=we BELONG to him

The Lord is=WORKING THROUGH US!

READY TO DO THE WORK

SALT AND LIGHT

 

 

Jesus told us

You are the salt

Of the earth

You are the light

Of the world

 

But what does

It mean

To be salt and light

In today’s world

 

2000 years ago

Salt was the principal seasoning

That was used to cook

 

2000 years ago

There was no electricity

So light was a scarcity

And at a premium

 

So how

Can we

How will we be

Light in today’s world

It can be as simple

As a smile

Or an encouraging word

To someone

Who is having a bad day

 

Or it can be

To have a listening ear

For someone

Who needs to be heard

 

It can be as simple

As sending someone

A birthday card or get well card

Or it could be

Visiting a sick neighbor

In the hospital

 

Maybe we can’t

Change the whole world

As Jesus did

Just maybe

We can change someone’s world

 

Love, forgive, and be kind

Today=the Pharisees=try to

ENTRAP Jesus=by asking him

Yet another question

 

“Teacher=which COMMANDMENT

In the law=IS THE GREATEST?”                                                                                             Matthew 22:36

 

They are HOPING=Jesus

Will CHOOSE ONE commandment=IMPLYING

That the other commandments

Are not as important

 

But as ALWAYS=Jesus is

TOO SMART=to be entrapped

He turns it around =on them

By telling us=it is

ALL ABOUT LOVE

 

“Jesus replied’=

‘LOVE the Lord=your God=with

All your heart=and with all

Your soul=and with all your mind’

 

This is the first=and greatest commandment

And the second is=like it

‘LOVE your neighbor=as yourself’=All the Law

And the Prophets

Hang on these two commandments”                                                                                Matthew 22:37-40

 

You see=brothers and sisters=

Our Lord Jesus=is NOT looking at

GIVING us a set of rules= to follow

 

But in interested in=THE CONVERSION

OF OUR HEARTS=to Love

The people back then=didn’t get it

 

And we the people today

DON’T GET IT=or we wouldn’t have

This country and world=IN

The shape that it is in

 

We need to=CONVERT OUR HEARTS

And change our HEARTS=to loving

God and to LOVING EACH OTHER

 

“But if from there=you seek

The Lord your God=you will find him

 

If you seek him=with ALL YOUR HEART

SAINT JUDE---PATRON SAINT OF HOPELESS CASES

 

Do you ever feel hopeless

I know that I do

 

Well I have some good news for you

In addition to Jesus

 

 

There is a Saint that we can pray to

Or at least ask to intercede for us

On our behalf

 

His name is Jude---Also known as Thaddeus

 

Jude was the ½ brother of James the lesser

Both original Apostles

And ½ brothers of Jesus

 

There was little devotion

To Saint Jude

Because his name was so close to that of Judas

The traitor

That devotion to him became discouraged

 

But devotion

Began to pick up in the 14^th century

When our Lord himself

Directed Saint Bridget of Sweden

To turn to Saint Jude in faith and confidence

 

Our Lord told Saint Bridget

That the name of Thaddeus means

“Amiable and loving---and---

He will show himself most willing to help”

 

Saint Jude’s father’s name was Cleophas

And he was murdered

Because of his outspoken devotion

To the Risen Christ

 

Mary Cleophas---the Mother of Saint Jude

Was present at Christ’s crucifixion

And after her death

Many miracles were attributed

To her intercession

 

Jude---like his brother James

Did not believe that Jesus

Was the Son of God

Until after the Resurrection

 

After the Resurrection

Jude---along with his companion Simon

Preached and taught in Mesopotamia

For ten years

Converting many to Christianity

 

His teachings

Were primarily against Gnosticism---

The teaching that the sins of the body

Does not affect the sins of the soul

And against the people of his day---

Bearing false witness---about Jesus

And our Christian walk

 

He taught that Christians

Need to be aware of false teachers

Infiltrating the church

 

Certainly---at least in my mind

As true today---as it was back then

Maybe more so---just turn on your television set

 

But maybe---in my mind

His most important teaching

Was that believers

Should be merciful to unbelievers

 

He and Simon

Made more converts in Persia

Where he was clubbed to death

 

We all face hopeless situations

In today’s world

Maybe more so than ever

 

We may lose hope

Because of our health diagnosis

The loss of a loved one

Our finances

A broken relationship within the family

Or for many other reasons

 

“And we rejoice

In the hope of the glory of God

Not only so

But we also rejoice in our suffering

Because we know that suffering

Produces perseverance; perseverance---character

And character---HOPE

And hope does not disappoint us

Because God has poured out his love

Into our hearts by the Holy Spirit

Whom he has given us”                                           Romans 5:3-5

 

So when we are feeling hopeless

And like our Lord told Saint Bridget about Saint Jude

We can be confident that:

 

“HE WILL SHOW HIMSELF MOST WILLING TO HELP”

That ENABLES=all the REST=of

What has happened=to our world

We seem to

Have FORGOTTEN Jesus=in this world

The REASON=the world is

FALLING APART=is because

MAN thinks they know

More than God

 

Human beings HAVE REPLACED

LOVE of God=and love of others

With love of money and materialism=sexuality

And man made things

Like pornography=alcohol=and drugs

 

It is God=IT IS LOVE=it is

THE HOLY FATHER GOD=and Jesus Christ

That HOLD our world together=and UNTIL

We get back to=BUILDING on God/love

We will be=A LOST WORLD

 

“Now I commit you=to God

And to the word=of his grace=which

CAN BUILD you up=and give you=an inheritance

Among=all those who are sanctified”                                                                                           Acts 20:32

 

“Do not let=any unwholesome talk

Come out of your mouths=but

 

Only what is helpful=for

BUILDING OTHERS UP=according=

According to their needs=that it may

Benefit those who listen”                                                                                                   Ephesians 4:29

As Jesus

Got closer and closer

To his destiny

And his teaching

Got harder and harder

Many of his disciples

Walked away

 

I wonder

If they lived

Happy and fulfilled lives

 

I wonder

If they found solace

In money

If that replaced our Lord

I wonder

If they found happiness

In being accepted by society

If that replaced

The teaching of our Lord

 

Dear God

Please help us

To always be

Like Saint Peter who said

“To whom shall we go Lord

You have the words

Of everlasting life”

 

If we left our Lord

Where would we go

For truth

 

If we left our Lord

Would we still live

By the golden rule

 

And what about death

How could we face death

Without God and Christ in our lives

 

Our Lord

Is our model

He is

Our standard for living

 

Of course

We will come up short

If we compare ourselves

To our Lord

 

But death

Will be our loveliest moment

Because

Our Lord did indeed

Possess the words of eternal life

 

Lord

We ask you for the courage

To never run away

From you

 

And be

Like Saint Francis and say

“Welcome Sister Death”

Let us face it=as we AGE

Our BODIES=do not work

As well=as they once did

 

When we are YOUNG=our bodies

Work great=we have STRENGTH and

Energy=and we have enthusiasm

FOR ALL THINGS NEW

 

But what we can do=AT AGE 20

We cannot do=at age 40=and at 60

WE CAN’T Do=what we could do=at 40

We are=MOVING

CLOSER AND CLOSER=TO OUR GOD!

 

“Who will deliver me=

FROM THIS MORTAL BODY?”                                                                                                    Romans 7:24

 

But let us=also FACE IT=as

We get older=all things=are NOT BAD

We get=MORE WISE=we get more guile

We get by=ON our perseverance and 

OUR SMARTS

 

There are SOME BLESSINGS

With this AGING=and we get

CLOSER AND CLOSE=To our God!

 

“Is not wisdom found=

AMONG THE AGING=does not

Life bring understanding?”                                                                                                   Job 12:12

 

“For the perishable=must

Clothe itself=with the imperishable

And the mortal=with immortality”                                                                             1 Corinthians 15:53

 

YES=AGING

Can be a blessing too=Moving

CLOSER AND CLOSER=to our God!

 

We get CLOSER AND CLOSER

To our Jesus=we PREPARE OURSELVES

To FACE all of eternity

With Jesus=and our Holy Father God!

 

What a GIFT=what a blessing

That that is=our slowing down

Our ailments=are the BLESSINGS

And will prepare us=for

ALL OF ETERNITY=with our Lord

 

Getting a little slower=but

Getting a LITTLE WISER=as we get

CLOSER AND CLOSER=to our God

Through this aging

 

“One who=has unreliable friends

Comes to ruin=but there is a FRIEND

Who sticks CLOSER=than a brother”                                                                                    Proverbs 18:24

 

“He tends his flock=like

A shepherd=he gathers the lambs

In his arms=and

 

Carries them=CLOSE to his heart

He gently leads those=who have young”                                                                         Isaiah 40:11

 

Yes each year=THAT WE AGE

We are getting=CLOSER AND CLOSER

(To our God)!

 

Closer to his UNFAILING LOVE=

Closer to his strength=closer to be

MORE WITH GOD

 

We are getting=CLOSER AND CLOSER

To our ever LOVING=Holy Father God

And his SON=Jesus Christ

MARY, MY SISTER

 

 

My sister Mary

Is a devoted mother

She is the mother

Of four

And those little girls

Are with her

All the way

To the core

 

She is also

A devoted wife

But sometimes we forget

A wife

And a mother

Is not

All of who she is

 

She also

Has a life

Of her own

But like all mothers

Sometimes we forget this

We forget WHO she is

 

Many years ago

We were close

I used

To call her pal

But our lives

Went in different directions

 

And that’s ok

Because

That’s the way

Life is

In these times

We call

The 21^st century

 

My sister Mary

And her beautiful family

Will always

Be family to me

Of the Blessed Mother

I feel like

My 2 sisters and I

Had the greatest Mother---

The world has ever seen

 

Children are a reward

From the Lord

 

My sister Mary

Is also one of the finest Mothers

I have ever seen

 

A woman devoted with love

To her 4 girls

 

Lindsay born in 1990

Children are a reward

 

Allison born in 1992

Children are a reward

 

“For where your treasure is

There your heart will also be”                   Matthew  6:21

 

As long as I can remember

Mary’s treasure

Has always been

Will always be

Her family---her children

 

Stephanie born in 1995

 

Children are

A reward from God

A reward for a Mother’s love

 

Carley born in 1997

The gift of a life

A reward from God

For a Mother’s love

 

Mary is also

A devoted wife

Been married to David for 23 years

 

“A wife of noble character

Who can find?

She is worth

Far more than rubles

 

Her husband

Has full confidence in her

And lacks nothing of value”                   Proverbs  31:10-11

 

Mary has also been

A devoted daughter and sister

Despite living out of town

And having a family of her own

She spent much time

With my Father and Mother---always

But particularly

As they lived out their days

 

Mary and I

Have always been close

Going back all the way

To when we were teenagers

 

This continues to this day

As she continues

To call me numerous times each week

To see how that I am

 

Jesus once said,

“Who are my Mother and brothers?”

And then, as if to answer his own question, said

“Whoever does God’s will

Is my brother, my sister, my Mother”                   Mark 3:33 & 35

 

In that same spirit

On  Mary’s 51^st birthday

We celebrate

The gift of a life

The gift of her life

 

The gift of a daughter

The gift of a sister

The gift of a devoted wife

 

But mostly

The gift of
