SAINT MARTHA=(the SAINT of the ACTIVE LIFE)

SAINT MARTHA
(the SAINT of the ACTIVE LIFE)

Martha was
A 1st century disciple of Christ

She was the sister
Of Lazarus and Mary
And their home
Was especially loved
By Jesus

We see in Luke
How gently Jesus criticizes her
For choosing
The active life

“As Jesus and his disciples
Were on their way
He came to a village
Where a woman named Martha
Opened her home to him

She had a sister
Called Mary
Who sat
At the Lord’s feet
But Martha
Was distracted by all
The preparations
That had to be made

She came to him
And asked

‘Lord-don’t you care
That my sister
Has left me to do the work
By myself
TELL her to help me’

‘Martha Martha
The Lord answered

You are worried
And upset about many things
But only ONE thing is needed

MARY has chosen
WHAT is better
And it will NOT
BE TAKEN away from her’” Luke 10:38-42

And isn’t that the way
With us-IN this 21st century
WORRIED AND UPSET about many things
WHEN ONLY ONE THING is needed

LISTENING TO GOD

Sometimes
We need to think
And CONTEMPLATE
On the WORD OF GOD
And not always be doing-doing-doing

Martha also appears
Appears in the Bible
On the occasion
Of the rising of her brother-Lazarus
WHEN HER FAITH
In his DIVINE POWER
PROMTS Jesus to say:

“I AM
THE RESURRECTION and the LIFE

HE who believes in me will live
EVEN though he dies
And whoever lives and believes in me
WILL NEVER DIE-do you believe this?” John 11:25-26

AND MARTHA BELIEVED
And LAZARUS LIVED

Today
Martha is considered to be
THE PATRON SAINT of house wives and lay sisters

Her feast day is July 29th
And she is traditionally seen
As representing---THE ACTIVE LIFE
